Abstract

This study aims to analyze and investigate students’ interest to ISL Collective Video Quizzes as interactive media in listening skill of Narrative Text at grade IX SMP Negeri 23 Medan. This research was conducted with Mixed-Method Research. The data were obtained through questionnaire and interview. 28 students were as the source of data to answer 20 questions of the questionnaires related to the students’ interest by Slameto( 2003 ) then to support the data from questionnaire 28 students answer 10 questions from interview and the question also related to the students’ interest. The result of the study showed that the students agreed about they easy to understand the material, enjoy, happy, focus, anthusiast, excited and interest to the subject when the teacher used ISL Collective Video Quizzes on listening narrative text. The types of interest on ISL Collective Video Quizzes from the students’ are Individual Interest, Situatinal Interest, and Topic Interest.The students in the class IX at SMP N 23 Medan have interest on ISL Collective Video Quizzes. There were several indicators of students’ interest according to Slameto (2003) namely are  Attention, The Willingness, Needs, Feelings happy or joyful feelings, Teaching Materials and Teachers’Good Attitudes and Participation. From these indicators it’s relate with the reality. Students’ have interest on ISL Collective Video Quizzes because is interesting media for students’ in listening narrative text and can be useful for the students. They can answer the question of the quizz properly and correctly.They also agreed that using ISL Collective Video Quizzes help them in remembering the subject. Moreover, they stated that by using ISL Collective Video Quizzes, they felt more interesting in learning the subject and they did not get bored during the lesson. The researcher concluded that students’ interest on the used of ISL Collective Video Quizzesinin listening to narrative text is positive and usefull for students also can improve their listening skill. Keywords: Students’ Interest, ISL Collective Video Quizzes, Listening Skill,                     Narrative text

Abstract

This study has an objective namely to develop Canva as media in teaching writing Recount Text for tenth grade students of SMAN 11 Medan. Qualitative descriptive method was used in this study. This research was conducted by using six steps of Educational Research and Development (R&D), namely: gathering data, analyzing data, designing media, validating by expert, revising media, and final product. Questionnaire sheet was the instrument used in collecting data. The finding of this research showed that teaching media in form of video which was created by using Canva has been validated by two experts and the average score of four categories: Linguistic Dimension, Process, Product Dimensions and Contents, and Face Dimension / Layout was 90%. Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the types of teacher’ talk that occurs in English classroom interaction and to investigate the teacher’ reasons to use the types of categories in classroom interaction. This study focuses on analyzing the process of classroom interaction through Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS). This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. It was conducted in SMP Negeri 37 Medan at the VII-D grade class.  The subject of this research was an English teacher in SMP Negeri 37 Medan. The observation, recording, and interview techniques were used to collect the data. According to the findings of the study, the English teacher used all categories based on category of FIACS. The types of teacher talk that occurred were accept feeling, praises and encouragement, accepts’ or uses ideas of students, asking question, lecturing, giving direction and criticizing or justifying authority. The reasons why the teacher’ used that types of categories in classroom interaction.  Accept Feelings, the teacher used that type is to help students be bolder in expressing their ideas or opinions. Praise or Encourages, the teacher used that type is to make students can feel appreciated. Praised given by the teacher can make students confident to interact in the classroom. Uses student idea, the teacher used that type is to develop ideas or suggestions given by students. Asking Questions, the teacher used that type because the teacher wants to hone students’ skill and to make students’ understood about the topic being discussed before getting into the next topic. Lecturing, the teacher used lecturing in the classroom during teaching and learning process to make process of teaching and learning in the classroom to be successful. Giving Direction, the teacher used that type because the teacher’ want to know whether the students understand about the material or not. Criticizing or justifying authority, the teacher used that type is to create comprehensible condition for students to acquire target language. Keywords: Teacher Talk, Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop materials for reading of narrative text. This study was carried out at SMP Negeri 8 Medan. This research was based on Research and Development (R&D). It contained six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising materials, and final product. The data were gathered through the distribution of questionnaire for pupils and interviewed an English teacher to get the pupils’ need. The product has been validated by two experts in percentage. The average score of experts’ validations was 94.2% in content aspect, the presentation aspect was 95%, the language aspect was 96.6%, and the layout was 95%. The average score was 95.2% which categorized as very good. This study concluded that the developed materials of narrative text which based on Project Based Learning may be used as teaching materials of narrative text at Junior High School level. Keyword: Materials, Reading, Narrative Text, Research and Development, Project Based Learning

Abstract

Dalihan Na Tolu is a philosophy of life for the community which is the basis for the rules of the Batak community in society. Dalihan Na Tolu’s consists of three main parts, namely somba marhula-hula, elek marboru, and manat mardongan tubu. This thesis aims to analyze thesemiotics signs contained in the Batak Toba wedding ceremony, namely martuppol which is included in Dalihan Na Tolu, as well as the meaning of the sign through the symbolic relationship between the signifier and the signified. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with data sources in the form of interviews with people related to the martuppol event and the data used in this study are text and images. The theory used to analyze the data is the theory proposed by Odgen and Richard about the semiotic triangle. The findings of this study consist of signs found in the martuppol event, there are 4 important signs found in the event. The findings of this study are expected to be a useful resource in other research and for the development of semiotic studies of commercial works.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the types of impoliteness strategies based on Jonathan Culpeper theory, and how is the used of impoliteness strategies posted by the netizen. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data were taken from comments column posted by netizens of Nissa Sabyan Instagram Account. The technique for analyzing the data is qualitative research.  The results of this research showed that there are four impoliteness are used, which are Bald on Record, Positive Impoliteness, Negative Impoliteness, and Sarcasm/Mock Politeness. There were 50 comments. In total there are 6 comments on Bald on Record (12%), 20 comments on Positive Impoliteness (40%), 18 comments on Negative Impoliteness (36%) and 6 comments on Sarcasm/Mock Politeness (12%). Based on the comments that have been analyzed, The researcher concluded that how is the used of Impoliteness Strategies, First, the writer found that the netizens mostly used positive impoliteness and negative impoliteness strategies to express their negative attitude on giving online comments of Nissa Sabyan Instagram Account. The reason could be, that in comparison to other strategies, these have a large number of sub-strategies that support positive and negative impoliteness strategies, such as ignore, uncaring, seek disagreement, scorn, ridicule the other, frighten, and so on.

Abstract

The determination of Indonesian netizens had damaged the image of Indonesia as a friendly and polite country as the most disrespectful netizens in Southeast Asia in 2021 and this was not suitable with Indonesian culture which always prioritized politeness. The more development and transparency of social media, the more netizens used harsh words to express their opinion. The use of offensive words on social media was a serious matter and had negative impacts such as damaging self-image to imprisonment. The purpose of this study was to analyze the use of harsh words among Indonesian netizens on various topics. The methodology used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The data was collected by capturing harsh words used by netizens on social media. The results showed that three topics become targets to write harsh words by netizens, namely politics, celebrity, and humanity topics. The number of harsh words found on the political topic is 10 words, while the celebrity topic contains 21 harsh words and 4 harsh words in humanity topic. The word bacot (bullshit) was most often used by netizens to attack politicians with a percentage of 22,2%, selalu merasa jadi korban (playing victim) with a percentage of 14% to attack celebrity and tolol (stupid) in humanity topic. Therefore, through this research some suggestions were directed to Indonesian netizens and stakeholders to maintain Indonesia's culture of good communication while they were on social media.

Abstract

Konglish is a Korean vocabulary adapted from English but pronounced according to Korean pronunciation. The pronunciation usually seems to sound like Korean, but the writing is more towards spelled English. An example is "Big Size" which in Korean becomes 빅 사이즈 (bik-sa-ee-jeu). This analysis focuses on Konglish findings in the Korean film that aired on 2021 entitled Sweet & Sour. "Sweet and Sour" is a captivating romantic comedy-drama film from South Korea, helmed by director Lee Gye-byeok. The purpose of this study is to analyse the various word formation Konglish found in Sweet & Sour films and classify them according to the borrowing characteristics theory from Molina & Albir (2002). The researcher alson want to know the reason behind why the dominant type of Konglish borrowing are found. Molina & Albir (2002) have classified borrowing more detail into two characteristics: (1) pure borrowing, and (2) naturalized borrowing. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method because the results of the analysis presented descriptively. The data analysis technique used is to rewrite the dialogue in the form of a transcript, then take note and analyse the Konglish words contained in the dialogue. The results of this research found around 42 Konglish found in the film "Sweet and Sour" with details: Naturalized Borrowing found 13 times with a percentage of 30.95%. and Pure Borrowing found 29 times with a percentage of 69.04% and the influence of working field as this movie’s background made Pure Borrowing as the dominant type found.Keyword: Borrowing word, Konglish, Naturalized, Pure

Abstract

The research was conducted at SMPN 2 Percut Sei Tuan (PST). Thesubjects of this study were 32 students in class VII-1 SMPN 2 PST,consisting of 18 female students and 12 male students, in the 2022-2023 academic year. This study aims to determine whether the use ofthe Two Stay Two Stray technique can improve students' vocabulary mastery with reading text-based learning. This research includes 2cycles consisting of 7 meetings. The results of cycle 1 showed anincrease in the results of students' vocabulary mastery. The writer alsouses quantitative data in this study. If seen from the results obtainedfrom the pretest to the post test, the achievement of students'vocabulary mastery continues to increase significantly. Pretestlearning outcome data shows 11. 60% of students who are able to passa score of 75 (KKM). In cycle 1 there were 45.20% of students whoachieved a score of 75. Meanwhile in cycle 2 there were 91.20% ofstudents who passed a score of 75. Looking at the observationinstruments and diary notes also showed an increase in the quality ofthe teaching and learning process which was more conducive. So thewriter can conclude that the use of the Two Stay Two Stray approachin learning vocabulary in class VII-1 T.A 2022-2023 can significantlyimprove the results of students' vocabulary mastery and increasestudents' understanding of the text. Key Words : Increasing, Ability, Vocabulary, Strategy

Google docs is a free and easy-to-use technology on which individual, pair, and groups of students can create, write, edit, store, comment and give immediate feedback on their writing simultaneously from their computers or other tablet devices they have in and outside the classroom. In this research, the researcher conducted research about perception on the use of Google Docs. The problem of this research is what is students’ perception of writing text online using Google Docs. This research aims to know the strategy use by the students in writing descriptive text online using Google Docs.The researcher will discuss about writing descriptive text using Google Docs. The use of Google Docs is common media used during 2022/2023. Google Docs helps the teacher to deliver the material. In this case, writing tasks require students to produce a shared text. In groups, students scaffold tasks and achieve a more developed product. Google Docs facilitates writing instructional practices. Google Docs allows people to work, read, review, comment, and edit to each other in the same document simultaneously (Deveci, 2018; Ishtaiwa & Aburazeq, 2015). It gives the benefits that Google Docs offers, this research reported sought to explore students’ perception on writing processes using Google Docs, especially in generating their ideas, organizing the text, and constructing the sentences in writing descriptive text.This research used descriptive research because based on the research problem; the objective of this research it is to know students’ perception of writing text online using Google Docs for SMK Negeri 01 Jember in 2022/2023 Academic Year.Based on the data, students' perspective on Google Docs is positive. From the students' view can be seen how Google Docs help students to do assignments anywhere, anytime, can access these tools directly to correct their assignments and submit to the teacher. They also get other positive things when they want to find information of assignment by accessing it on their cellphone while they are working on Google Docs. In other side, they also find difficulty in internet access.
