Abstract

This study reports on how the studies concerning second language acquisition (SLA) in Indonesia have been conducted in association to the teaching and learning activities of young language learners and to what extent the studies contribute to the development of SLA in Indonesia. Language acquisition (LA) is related to the way individuals acquire the target language for its words, structures, meaning, pragmatics and so forth. However, previous research reviewing young EFL learners’ language acquisition in the Indonesian EFL context is still limited. Therefore, a total of 40 selected papers was reviewed to find out the current state of SLA in Indonesian. According to the outcome of the review, SLA in the Indonesian context has been investigated regarding the beginning processes of TEYL, the teaching-learning strategies, the teaching media, the teaching methods, young learners' language developments, the advantages and disadvantages of learning English. The present paper presents possible suggestions for English teachers, school administrators, and parents to be involved in teaching and learning English for young learners in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the speaking skill of goodnight application users. The focus of this research is to describe and analyze users speaking skills in using the goodnight application, how their speaking skills are after using the goodnight application, what features they use and how long they are active in these features. The research design is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this research were 10 users of the goodnight application. To analyze the speaking skills of goodnight application users. Researchers used interviews by asking several questions to the users of the goodnight application.The researcher found that most users are able to speak English after using the goodnight application. The findings of this research shows that most users are able to use English, their speaking ability increases after using the goodnight application. They are quite capable of speaking English when discussing daily life.  Based on the results of the analysis, is the researcher concludes that goodnight application users are able to use English. Users also agree that the goodnight application is able to improve speaking abilities.

Abstract

Storytelling have already integrated in learning speaking with many advantages, the researchers apply it among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students in Kampung Inggris Transmigration to fostering students' speaking skills. Utilizing the Photovoice methodology and the SHOWeD method, the study systematically explores the use of storytelling in language learners' speaking abilities. Participants of this study were 5 tutors and 30 students from two EFL classes in Kampung Inggris Transmigrasi. The findings highlight the pivotal role of storytelling in creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment that encourages active participation and collaboration. This research contributes to the field of language education by emphasizing the significant influence of storytelling on developing effective speaking skills in EFL students, offering insights into innovative methodologies for language acquisition.Keywords: Speaking Skills, Storytelling, and EFL Students

Abstract

This research investigates the pivotal role of integrity in the English language teaching (ELT) context of Indonesian universities. It explores the concept of integrity within the classroom, its impact on student learning, and the strategies employed by teachers to cultivate integrity among students. By examining the correlation between teacher integrity and student outcomes, this study aims to underscore the significance of ethical conduct in fostering a conducive learning environment. Abstract

Reading is one of the essential abilities that must be possessed by everyone because through reading, one can access a lot of information and knowledge. Additionally, reading is also considered one of the gateways to knowledge. The implementation of the extensive reading method can improve the reading ability of the 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Sembilan. According to researchers, the application of the extensive reading method is one way to enhance students' reading skills. The population in this study consists of 22 students from the 10th grade at SMA Negeri 4 Sembilan. This research employs two tests, namely the pre-test and post-test, and the results of these tests will be compared to determine whether there has been an improvement or not. The average score of the pre-test is 53.86. On the other hand, the average post-test score in cycle 1 is 63.86, and in cycle 2, it is 75. There were significant improvements after implementing the Extensive Reading Approach. This indicates that the use of the Extensive Reading Approach can enhance students' reading skills. By utilizing Extensive Reading in teaching reading, particularly reading skills, the reading ability of the 10th-grade students at SMAN 4 Sembilan can be improved. Students prefer this approach because it helps them in their reading. Hence, the Extensive Reading Approach can enhance students' reading skills.

Abstract

English is the most important subject nowadays. There are some texts which have to be mastered by junior high school students. One of the them is the narrative text, a text that tells a story, in which the social functions are to inform, entertain, or amuse the readers. students have problems and difficulty reading comprehension of story texts. They found difficulties in finding information, main ideas or intentions of sentences in the text. Besides that, their lacking of vocabulary that students have, what is contained in the contents of the reading is  not conveyed to students, and students' interest and motivation towards learning English is lacking. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the Comic Strips has an effect or not siginificant reading comprehension. This research was conducted using quantitative methods. The research sample consisted of 20 students in class VIII-1 as the experimental class and 20 students in classVIII-2 as the control class. From the data that has been analyzed, the researcher found that the average result of the experimental class was 35 while the average result of the control class was 25. The results of calculations using the t test showed that t observed was higher than the t table (4.48 > 2.02) with df: 38 at the significance level a=0.025. So the alternative hypothesis (ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. So it can be concluded that the Comic Strips in the improve reading comprehension learning process is effective to use.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to analyze the gestures of a groups of friends and the realization basen on the context in the mocieand culture, and how the gesture occurred in the movie. The description consists of (1)what kind of gesture used in Jumanji Movie“Welcome to The Jungle”; (2) how the realization the context in the movie; (3) how arethe gesture occurred in Jumanji Movie “Welcome to The Jungle”. This study useddescriptive qualitative method which is conducted to describe and analyze the gesturesused in the movie. The main theory is the kind of gestures by McNeil (2005). The dataanalysis requires the process of reducing data, dispalying data and consulting. The resultshows that this study has found 47 kinds of gestures which are used by the maincharacters in the movie. They are There are four types of gestures in the movie JumanjiWelcome to The Jungle (2017), as the researcher has done in the analysis. There are 47records found. There are 14 (30%) data as iconic gestures, 18 (38%) data as metaphorgestures, 13 (28%) data as deictic gestures, and 2 (44%) data as beat gestures. Eachgesture has their own meaning in context of the film and cultural context, for exampledeictic type, using the index finger to point in a different direction can be interpreted asa gesture to indicate and emphasize that the other person should look in the indicateddirection.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to obtain empirical evidence about the effect of Digital Storytelling on students' English narrative writing skills. The object of this research was 150 class XI students of SMAN 1 Pantai Labu which was carried out in August 2023. The research method was quasi-experimental. The sampling technique is purposive sampling; it was conducted in class XI at SMAN 1 Pantai Labu class XI MIA 2 as an experimental class while class XI IIS 2 as a control class. Both the experimental class and the control class consisted of 30 students. The instrument used in this research was a writing test. There is a pre-test and post-test on writing narrative texts given to students. Data was obtained in this research by statistical calculations. Based on the research results, the researcher concluded that the narrative writing ability of class XI students at SMAN 1 Pantai Labu in the experimental class was good. The highest score on the post-test was 70 (4 students) and the lowest score on the post-test was 50 (5 students). The writing ability of students in the control class is sufficient. The highest score on the post test was 85 (5 students) and the lowest score on the post test was 60 (1 student). From the findings, the description of the mean score of the students’ pre-test and post-test of experimental class showed improvement. The mean score of pre-test and post-test of experimental class were 65.67 and 74.33 which showed improvement. The data showed that the use of  Digital Storytelling in teaching the students’ writing skill especially in narrative is effective.

Abstract

This study investigated speaking anxiety factors that lead EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students feel anxious in Speaking in Formal Context class. The participants of this research were 29 students of class B1, 2nd  semester, English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara , even semester, academic year 2022-2023. This research was conducted with descriptive qualitative approach by administering questionnaires to students which consisted of five closed-ended questions. The questions were taken from FLSAS questionnaires. Observation was also applied to this study. Lecturer observed the progress of students’ speaking performances from the second meeting until the last regular meeting. The findings revealed that students’ speaking anxiety factors in English speaking class mainly dominated by the lack abilities in vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, worried of being laughed at by peers which resulted to the anxiety, inconfidence and fear in speaking. These findings suggest that the lecturer’s role is also significant to encourage

Abstract

Mastery of vocabulary needs to be done to improve students’ ability to communicate, therefore it is very important for students to master vocabulary so that they can communicate with someone. Many Indonesian students have difficulty mastering vocabulary in English, especially students of SMP Negeri 1 Delitua, including students who lack vocabulary and have difficulty remembering unfamiliar vocabulary. The objective of the research was found the effect of using Quizizz application on students’ vocabulary mastery of VIII Grades Class at SMP Negeri 1 Deli Tua. The method of this research was quantitative research. The research sample consisted of 30 students in class VIII-1 as the experimental class and 30 students in class VIII-2 as the control class. From the data that has been analyzed, the researcher found that the experimental pre-test results which were initially 67,40 had an increase in the experimental post-test of 85,67 whereas in the pre-control there was also an increase, but not too significant. The output the significant value (Sig) based on the mean is 0.112 > 0.05. On the output results above, the sig (2-tailed) value is 0.000 < 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the variance of the post-test data for the experimental class and the post-test data for the control class are the same or homogeneous. This can work effectively and efficiently in achieving students’ vocabulary at SMP Negeri 1 Delitua and this learning has been successfully implemented and can achieve students' vocabulary mastering.
