Abstract

This research is aimed at analyzing the categories of teacher talk in teaching speaking of English classroom interaction based on the FLINT system at grade VIII SMPIT Al-Hijrah Deli Serdang and explaining why teachers realize the categories of teacher talk as the way they do. The research design of this study was qualitative. The data were taken by recording and interviewing the teachers. FLINT system was used to analyze the data that contained eleven categories of teacher talk, namely: deals with feeling, praises or encourages, jokes, uses ideas of student, repeats student response verbatim, asks questions, gives information, corrects without rejection, gives direction, criticizes student behavior, and criticizes student response. The results showed that teacher 1 not applied corrects without rejection while teaching. Meanwhile, teacher 2 not applied jokes and repeats student response verbatim. The most significant difference between the two teachers was the class atmosphere taught by the first teacher was more cheerful than the second teacher. Then, the reasons teachers realize teacher talk categories are because of positive feeling atmosphere, increasing students' enthusiasm, creating a humorous class, developing ideas, emphasizing the words, providing the opportunity to speak, conveying information, building students' awareness, achieving the goals, changing students' non-acceptable behavior, and responding properly.

Abstract

Pragmatic competence is crucial for language learners, more specifically EFL learners. Nonetheless, it has been found that when it comes to English language teaching in the EFL context, more emphasis is put on linguistic instead of pragmatic competence. Furthermore, in terms of understanding conversational implicatures, little attempt has been made in the EFL classrooms to make the learners aware of the use of implicature as a communication tool. From this, the writers have become interested in exploring undergraduate EFL students’ ability to comprehend conversational implicatures, more specifically, students from the English Department at Bunda Mulia University, Jakarta. Additionally, the writers would like to investigate whether the students’ English proficiency influence their ability to understand the implied meaning behind conversational implicatures. A total of 60 students are included as the respondents. For the data collection, the researchers distribute a multiple-choice test to the respondents, and they are also asked to do the online English proficiency test. The result of the multiple-choice test is analyzed qualitatively to find out which of the four types of implicatures are the most problematic for the students. Additionally, the result of these two tests is then analyzed quantitatively using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation to find out whether there is a significant relationship between these two variables. The result shows that students had the most problem understanding indirect refusals, and that there is a significant positive correlation between the learners’ English proficiency and their ability to understand the indirect meanings in the conversational implicatures.

Then they were rigorously field-tested, assessed, and refined until they met the required requirements of efficacy, quality, or a comparable level. The way to make AVM suitable for this, is by the process of collecting data to gain student needs. By the process of collecting data in terms of students’ necessities, lacks, and wants, the researcher knows how to build a material as a content of this AVM. The way how Animaker develop the AVM is Animaker have an advantage to support AVM become interesting and suitable. By the diversity of template, background, transition, and character, Animaker has succeed to support and develop AVM to interpret what the students’ need. In fact, this AVM gained score 89% which indicated “excellent”Keywords: Speaking, Audio-Visual Media, Animaker

Abstract

In higher education, cultivating effective speaking skills is crucial for preparing students to succeed in today's dynamic and interconnected world. Traditional teaching methods often fall short of engaging students and promoting active learning. This research explores the potential of interactive video as an innovative teaching medium to enhance speaking skills while incorporating the 4Cs - Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity - into the learning process. The results indicate that interactive videos significantly impact students' speaking proficiency, as evidenced by improved pre-and post-assessment scores. Moreover, students reported enhanced engagement and motivation during the learning process, attributing it to the dynamic nature of interactive video content, which leverages multimedia elements, real-life scenarios, and interactive exercises. The results indicate that interactive videos significantly impact students' speaking proficiency, as evidenced by improved pre and post-assessment scores. Moreover, students reported enhanced engagement and motivation during the learning process, attributing it to the dynamic nature of interactive video content, which leverages multimedia elements, real-life scenarios, and interactive exercises. Furthermore, incorporating the 4Cs into interactive video design demonstrated transformative effects on students' speaking skills. Integrating collaborative activities fostered teamwork and communication among students, while critical thinking was stimulated through decision-making scenarios embedded within the videos. Additionally, the creative aspect of the interactive videos encouraged students to express their ideas and opinions more freely, ultimately boosting their confidence in public speaking. The meaning of the gesture used by the main character also varies based on gesture. The meaning of gesture is supported by the utterances in the dialogue (Semantic Meaning). It means that the use of gestures related to the meaning of utterances. But, there are some data that do not have a cultural meaning and no relation to the semantic meaning, such as beat type. A beat gesture is a simple gesture a rhythmic movement that does not express semantic content. The main character used beat gestures to lose nervousness, to get more relaxed, to be more effective and expressive, and to increase self-confidence.Keywords: Gesture, Meaning Gesture, Semantic Meaning, Movie.
