Abstract

Assessment for learning or formative assessment is a process of gathering and analysing information about what learners know and can do and using that information to make instructional decisions. The role of assessment for learning, especially in an ESL classroom cannot be overemphasized. Among other things, formative assessments can go a long way in helping learners to set learning goals and prepare well for summative assessments. Regrettably, many teachers are unable to implement assessments for learning in their ESL classrooms. This study examined what the ESL teachers at Bole District of the Savanna Region of Ghana think about the assessment for learning, how they implement it, and the challenges they face in implementing it. The study adopted the mixed methods approach and the convergent parallel design. Census sampling was used to select all the 82 ESL teachers in the Bole District. The findings showed that ESL teachers had positive beliefs about assessment for learning practices. However, they did not implement it in their classrooms due to challenges such as inadequate time on timetables, large class sizes, lack of resources, limited access to technology, and overloaded English curriculum. It is recommended that school heads should make every endeavour to provide adequate time on timetables and they should also provide the ESL teachers with the needed assessment for learning resources for effective teaching and learning.

Abstract

This research explores the role of animated films as a medium for addressing social issues, particularly discrimination, with a focus on the film “Elemental” (2023). Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzes discriminatory actions and their impacts on the three main characters: Barnie, Cinder, and Ember. Drawing on Dovidio and Esses’ (2010) theory of discrimination and Ayón's (2015) concept of effects, the research highlights parts of the film depicting discrimination and its physical and non-physical consequences. The result of the current study shows that different types of discrimination were portrayed in the movie through explicit and implicit actions as well as institutional and cultural biases. These findings indicate that animated films can effectively convey information about discrimination to various audiences, especially children, in a creative and easily understandable manner. This reaffirms that animated films serve not only as tools for ideological communication but also as agents of social change. The study also dissects the negative impacts of discrimination on the mental health and family functions experienced by the main characters. Through the analysis of discriminatory actions presented in dialogue, settings, and actions in the film, the research provides a profound understanding of the main characters' experiences in facing discrimination. In conclusion, this research reinforces the importance of using animated films as a tool for voicing social issues.

Abstract

This systematic review aims to explore the factors that influence children's second language comprehension ability. Second language acquisition in children is a complex process that is influenced by a variety of factors. Understanding these factors can provide valuable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers to optimize language learning strategies and interventions. This review follows a systematic approach by conducting a comprehensive search across multiple databases, including educational, psychological, and linguistic sources. Relevant studies published in the last decade were included in the analysis. The review focuses on children aged 5 to 12 years, as this is a crucial period for language development and acquisition. By combining previous investigations as a more thorough evaluation of the literature, this study used the systematic literature review (SLR) method to address the research issues. The findings reveal several key factors that influence second language comprehension ability in children. Firstly, individual cognitive factors, such as working memory capacity, attention, and executive functions, play an important role in language processing and comprehension. Second, socio-cultural factors, including parental involvement, socioeconomic status, and exposure to a second language in the community, influence language learning outcomes. Thirdly, instructional factors, such as the quality of teaching methods, curriculum design, and classroom environment, have a great impact on children's language comprehension abilities. Based on these findings, this review underscores the need for a comprehensive and holistic approach to improving second language comprehension skills in children. It emphasizes the importance of integrating cognitive, socio-cultural, and instructional factors in language learning programs. In addition, the review also identifies research gaps and provides recommendations for future research to further enhance our understanding of second language acquisition in children.
