Abstract

Radicalism of Islamic politics in Indonesia has been characterized with violence. In the context of DI/TII (Darul Islam/Indonesia Islamic Army), Islamic politics refers to the rebel movements against the Indonesian government in view of both political disappointment and radical religious understanding. This study aims to analyze the adaptation of DI/TII in Islamic education in Olan Hamlet, Garut as the basis of the DI/TII movement. It used a qualitative method based upon primary data obtained from interviews with the Head of Islamic Boarding School Nurul Falah in Olan Hamlet, Garut, community figures, religious figures nearby and government. This study found that the radical Islamic political movement of DI/TII did not undergo any metamorphosis to the Islamic education movements through the Madrasah and Islamic boarding school of Nurul Falah in Olan Hamlet, Garut. In fact, the Islamic boarding school and Madrasah have had some efforts to campaign for moderate religious understanding through the programs and curricula. Hence, there are no worries of government about the emergence of the radical movements in Olan Hamlet. The religious figures, however, still suspect the metamorphosis of DI/TII in this hamlet. Keyword: Radicalism, DI/TII, Islamic Politics

Abstract

This study delves into examining manipulative strategies within the framework of COVID-19 discourse in Indonesia. The research systematically analyzes data from various social media platforms using a descriptive qualitative methodology. The analytical framework draws from speech act theory, argumentative discourse approaches, and manipulation strategy theory. The study’s findings uncover various manipulative tactics that influential figures in Indonesia deploy. These tactics encompass denial, rationalization, diversion, lying, guilt-tripping, and shaming. Notably, the research offers tangible instances of manipulation within the COVID-19 discourse, such as claims suggesting that the virus represents a divine army or that Chinese individuals frequent mosques to learn ablution (wudu). This study is valuable to the expanding literature on COVID-19 discourse and manipulation. It offers nuanced insights into the strategies harnessed to sway public opinion amid a global pandemic. The discerned findings from this study hold significant potential, as they can inform the development of public awareness campaigns and strategies designed to counter the spread of misinformation and disinformation, a critical endeavour in today’s information-rich landscape.

Abstract

Since the beginning of independence, Pancasila as the state ideology has been becoming a debate along with the increasing Islamic political awareness among Muslims. This study aims to analyze the debate among college students, lecturers and directors of the Islamic Religious Colleges (STAIs) about Pancasila as the state ideology. It used a quantitative research method with a total sample of 222 students at semester 5 disproportionately allocated to each selected college. The sampling in this survey was conducted by means of Stratified Multistage Sampling with the confidence level of 95%. This research was also strengthened by qualitative data that were extracted by interviewing the directors and lecturers of Islamic Religious Colleges (STAI) in Semarang, Denpasar, Jambi, Kupang and Banjarbaru. From this research, it can be concluded that the college students, lecturers and directors of STAIN have supported Pancasila as the state ideology that is not contradicting to Islam and will defend Pancasila as the state ideology. They also do not expect Pancasila to be replaced with Islam. This tendency then has shown the face of inclusive and moderate Islamic politics among college students, lecturers and directors of STAI. Keyword: Islamic Politics, Pancasila, Academic Communities.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate differences and correlations in engagement levels within university organizations among PMII members across Islamic State and private higher education institutions in Cirebon, as well as differences in their self-actualization. The research employs a quantitative approach with systematic random sampling. A sample of 285 participants was selected from a population of 1070 PMII members at these institutions with analysis techniques involving the Mann-Whitney U test for the first and second research questions, and Spearman’s correlation for the third. Results indicated a statistically significant difference in engagement levels within organizations between Islamic state and private higher education (U = 7193.500, z = -2.263, p = .024), suggesting higher engagement among Islamic state students. However, no significant difference was found in self-actualization levels between these groups (U = 5128, z = -.166, p = .868). Moreover, a strong positive correlation was observed between engagement levels within organizations and self-actualization among PMII members in both Islamic state and private institutions (rs = .525, p < .001).
