Abstract

This study examines the paradigm of conflict resolution in Tafsir al-Maraghi and reconstructs its epistemological relevance for addressing digital polarization. Employing a qualitative library research design with the thematic (maudhu'i) method of Qur'anic exegesis, the study analyzes key Qur'anic verses on conflict resolution interpreted by Ahmad Mustafa al-Maraghi and conceptually tests them against three contemporary cases of digital conflict: religious disinformation related to the Gaza conflict, religious identity polarization during Indonesia's 2024 presidential election, and the spread of takfiri preaching on TikTok. The findings reveal that al-Maraghi's conflict resolution paradigm is built upon five interconnected principles: al-'adl wa al-qist (justice), al-hiwar wa al-musyawarah (dialogue and consultation), al-'afw wa al-islah (forgiveness and reconciliation), al-sabr wa al-i'tidal (patience and moderation), and al-ta'awun 'ala al-birr (cooperation for righteousness). These principles demonstrate strong conceptual relevance in explaining and responding to patterns of digital conflict, particularly in fostering critical verification, dialogue, reconciliation, moderation, and social solidarity. Nevertheless, the paradigm remains limited in addressing structural issues such as algorithmic amplification, political power relations, digital platform governance, and the emergence of generative artificial intelligence. This study concludes that al-Maraghi's paradigm should be positioned as an ethical and epistemological foundation rather than a standalone solution, requiring integration with technological governance and public policy to effectively address contemporary digital conflicts.

Abstract

The phenomenon of loss of purpose among Generation Z has emerged as a significant psychological issue, characterized by the absence of direction, meaning, and purpose in life as a result of various pressures associated with modern living. This study aims to analyze the concept of life's purpose in Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab and examine its relevance to the phenomenon of loss of purpose among Generation Z. This research employs a library research method using a qualitative approach and the tahlili (analytical) method of Qur'anic interpretation. The primary data source is Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab, while secondary data are drawn from books, scholarly journal articles, and other relevant literature. The findings reveal that the concept of life's purpose in Tafsir Al-Misbah encompasses five principal dimensions: human beings are created to worship Allah (QS. Adh-Dhariyat [51]: 56), humans are appointed as vicegerents (khalifah) on earth (QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 30), life is a test to attain the best deeds (QS. Al-Mulk [67]: 2), inner peace is achieved through the remembrance of Allah (dhikr) (QS. Ar-Ra'd [13]: 28), and the ultimate orientation of life is to attain the pleasure of Allah (QS. At-Tawbah [9]: 72). These five dimensions are highly relevant to the phenomenon of loss of purpose among Generation Z, as they provide a meaningful direction in life, foster a sense of responsibility, strengthen awareness of humanity's ultimate purpose, cultivate inner tranquility, and develop a life orientation centered on seeking the pleasure of Allah. Therefore, the concept of life's purpose presented in Tafsir Al-Misbah offers a religio-spiritual foundation that can assist Generation Z in overcoming the phenomenon of loss of purpose.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of Qur'anic tahsin learning on the understanding of tajwid rules and Qur'anic memorization ability among participants of the Ummahat Tahsin Class at Rumah Qur'an Ubay bin Ka'ab, Rasjida Nazief Unit. The study employed a quantitative correlational design involving 23 participants selected using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected through a tahsin learning questionnaire, a tajwid comprehension test, a Qur'anic memorization performance assessment, and interviews as supporting data. Data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics, including validity and reliability tests, descriptive statistics, normality and linearity tests, Pearson correlation, simple linear regression, and Spearman correlation. The results indicate that Qur'anic tahsin learning has no significant effect on participants' understanding of tajwid rules (r = 0.173; p = 0.426; R² = 0.030). In contrast, tahsin learning has a significant and strong effect on Qur'anic memorization ability (r = 0.647; p < 0.001). These findings suggest that tahsin instruction, which emphasizes talaqqi, repeated recitation, and direct teacher feedback, is more effective in improving memorization than theoretical understanding of tajwid. Therefore, integrating conceptual tajwid instruction with practical recitation is recommended to enhance both theoretical understanding and practical competence among adult learners.

Abstract

This study examines the use of shadows (az-zilal) to determine prayer times through an exegetical analysis of the book Ifrad al-Maqal fi Amr az-Zilal by Abu Rayhan al-Biruni. The prevailing dichotomy of knowledge has led to Qur’anic verses on the theme of shadows being studied solely through linguistic or jurisprudential lenses, without involving quantitative verification through astronomical instruments. This research is a library-based study employing the thematic exegesis (tafsir maudhu’i) method and the scientific exegesis (tafsir ilmi) approach, using content analysis of E. S. Kennedy’s translation. The findings reveal that among all the Qur’anic quotations in Ifrad al-Maqal, there are four groups of verses that directly integrate the phenomenon of shadows with the determination of prayer times: QS. Al-Furqan [25]:45–46; QS. An-Nahl [16]:48 and QS. Ar-Ra’d [13]:15; QS. Al-Isra’ [17]:78; and QS. Hud [11]:114. These verses serve not only as theological legitimization but also as epistemological premises that al-Biruni transformed into a shadow trigonometry system utilizing the functions zill mustawi (cotangent) and zill ma’kus (tangent) to formulate precise boundaries for the Zuhr and Asr prayer times. This study affirms that al-Biruni is a pioneer of the scientific exegesis methodology that employs mathematics as an instrument of verification for the scientific indications of the Qur’an.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of dhikr (remembrance of God) within the framework of Sufi exegesis as articulated by Ibn Arabi and to explore its relevance in contemporary life, particularly in relation to mental health and ethical formation. The background of this research is rooted in the increasing prevalence of mental health issues, which calls for an integrative approach between spirituality and modern scientific perspectives. This study employs a qualitative approach with a library research design, using primary sources from Ibn Arabi’s works, such as Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim and Al-Futuhat al-Makkiyah. The data are analyzed using content analysis within the framework of Sufi exegesis. The findings reveal that dhikr, in Ibn Arabi’s perspective, is not merely a verbal practice but an integral spiritual process involving inner awareness, intentionality, and an existential relationship between the servant and God. Dhikr operates in a dialogical and reciprocal manner through the mechanism of tajallī (divine self-disclosure) and encompasses both ontological and epistemological dimensions, functioning as a means of divine participation and spiritual unveiling (kashf). The centrality of ism Allāh serves as a medium of comprehensive monotheistic awareness that leads humans toward the state of insān kāmil (the perfect human). However, this study also finds that Ibn Arabi’s Sufi interpretive approach, which relies heavily on inner experience, tends to overlook the outward (ẓāhir) meaning of the text, thereby raising concerns about interpretive subjectivity. This study contributes to the development of Qur’anic studies by strengthening Sufi exegetical approaches integrated with psychospiritual perspectives. It also highlights the practical relevance of dhikr as a means of self-purification (tazkiyat al-nafs), ethical reinforcement, and a therapeutic instrument for addressing mental health challenges in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study examines the typology of the function and meaning of the particle ala in the Qur'an through the perspective of John Rupert Firth's Contextual Semantics. The study departs from the assumption that the meaning of ala is relational and contextual, not lexical and fixed. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive-analytical methods, this study aims to map the variations in meaning and function of this particle by analyzing collocation patterns and situational contexts in each instance of its occurrence. The results show that ala functions as an active discourse marker whose meaning is dynamically shaped by its linguistic and context of situation. Based on Firthian analysis, a typology of the functions of ala was produced into four main categories: (1) exhortative function, (2) logical emphasis function, (3) serious warning function, and (4) rejection function. Each function correlates with specific collocational and situational contexts, such as its relationship with verses of punishment, arguments of tawhid, or the spread of da'wah. The conclusion of the study confirms that the meaning of ala is relational and contextual, rather than lexical and fixed. These findings not only provide a systematic functional map for understanding ala, but also offer an analytical model that can be applied to other micro-linguistic elements in the Qur'an.

Abstract

Qur’anic studies that seeks to correlate cosmological verses (āyāt kauniyyah) with modern scientific discoveries. The study aims to clarify the nature of scientific exegesis, trace its historical development and key figures, and analyze the methodological, epistemological, theological, and contextual critiques directed at this approach. Employing a qualitative library research method, the study utilizes descriptive-analytical, critical-comparative, and hermeneutic-philosophical analyses of scientific tafsir works and their critiques. The findings indicate that scientific exegesis contributes positively to fostering dialogue between revelation and science and to strengthening faith through reflection on natural phenomena. Nevertheless, this approach entails significant methodological risks when scientific theories—being empirical and provisional—are treated as foundational interpretive frameworks. Therefore, the article emphasizes the necessity of a balanced approach that positions science as a reflective and complementary tool rather than a determinant of revelatory truth, thereby preserving the theological authority and spiritual depth of the Qur’an

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pedagogical and epistemological dimensions in the story of Prophet Moses and Khidr in QS. Al-Kahf verses 60–82 based on the interpretation of Bahauddin Nursalim. The primary focus is to examine the dialectic between sharia (normative law) and haqiqah (spiritual truth) and its implications for contemporary Islamic education. This research employs a qualitative approach with a library research design, utilizing content analysis of the Qur’an, classical and contemporary tafsir literature, and selected lectures of Gus Baha. Data were analyzed through reduction, display, and conclusion drawing using a descriptive-analytical method. The findings reveal that the narrative represents two epistemological models in Islam: normative rationality grounded in sharia and spiritual depth rooted in haqiqah. Prophet Moses’ critical responses reflect a value-based critical thinking model, while Khidr’s actions embody divine wisdom that transcends empirical reasoning. From a pedagogical perspective, the teacher-student relationship in this narrative highlights the importance of dialogical learning that integrates critical inquiry, patience, and respect for scholarly authority. This study implies that the story serves as a conceptual foundation for developing contemporary Islamic education, particularly in balancing rationality and spirituality.

Abstract

This article examines the socio-ecological ramifications of the post-mining land crisis in Indonesia, which necessitates a more sophisticated theological response beyond general readings of environmental degradation. This research aims to address this crisis by proposing a novel interpretation of the terms fasād (corruption/damage) and ihlāk (annihilation/destruction) in QS. Al-Baqarah: 205, utilizing a Maqashidi Tafsir approach. Methodologically, this study is a qualitative library-based research that operationalizes the Maqashidi Tafsir framework proposed by Abdul Mustaqim. The analysis is conducted through three stages: first, examining the linguistic structure and comparative meanings of fasād and ihlāk; second, extracting the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah (objectives of Islamic law) from QS. Al-Baqarah: 205; and third, contextualizing these maqāṣidi values to evaluate the status of ecocide in Indonesia's post-mining land crisis. The results demonstrate that the term ihlāk offers a more precise conceptualization of the total destruction of ecosystems (al-ḥarṡ wa an-nasl). This practice is identified as a multidimensional violation of the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, namely the preservation of life (ḥifẓ al-nafs), property (ḥifẓ al-māl), and the environment (ḥifẓ al-bī’ah). Furthermore, through a protective approach, the study highlights the necessity for governmental mining control through legal policies and corporate accountability. Meanwhile, a productive approach yields progressive actions in the form of innovative post-mining recovery and sustainable development.

Abstract

This study examines the husband–wife relationship in the Qur’an and its implications for family resilience and national stability. By employing a thematic tafsir (maudhū‘ī) approach, this study analyzes the main principles of the Qur’an that regulate marital relationships, namely mawaddah wa raḥmah (love and affection), ta‘āwun (mutual assistance), mu‘āsharah bil ma‘rūf (ethical and civilized interaction), and qiwāmah (responsible leadership based on justice). This study seeks to respond to contemporary challenges such as the increasing rate of divorce, domestic violence, economic vulnerability, and the emergence of the phenomenon of voluntarily choosing not to have children (childfree), all of which indicate the weakening of family structures. Through a qualitative descriptive methodology with a literature review, this paper arrives at the conclusion that there are four frameworks of Qur’anic family transformation, namely: iṣlāḥ al-fard (individual reform), iṣlāḥ al-usrah (family reform), iṣlāḥ al-mujtama‘ (societal reform), and iṣlāḥ al-bilād (state reform). This framework positions the family as a strategic core in sustainable nation-building. This study contributes to Qur’anic studies, Islamic family law, and the discourse on social resilience by offering an integrative model that connects spiritual reform with socio-political stability.
