Abstract

This study examines the contemporary hermeneutical approaches of Abdullah Saeed and Mahmoud Ayoub as significant contributions to bridging the intellectual gap between Islamic classical tradition (turats) and modern socio-cultural realities. Employing a qualitative library research method, the analysis focuses on Saeed’s contextualist framework, which emphasizes the hierarchy of ethico-legal values and the evolution of Qur’anic meaning across time, and Ayoub’s historical-integrative method, which revitalizes the rich plurality of classical exegesis while maintaining continuity with the living tradition of Islamic scholarship. The study reveals that Saeed’s approach is future-oriented, aiming to reinterpret Qur’anic teachings to address human rights, gender equality, and social justice in contemporary contexts. Conversely, Ayoub’s approach is reconstructive, highlighting intertextual dialogue within classical tafsir to preserve the Qur’an’s spiritual and intellectual depth across generations. By comparing these methodologies, the research demonstrates that both scholars challenge absolutist claims of interpretation and promote a dynamic understanding of revelation. The study concludes that their hermeneutical contributions provide a constructive pathway for Qur’anic interpretation that is both faithful to tradition and responsive to modern realities.

Abstract

This study aims to re-analyze the provisions of women's inheritance rights by applying the framework of Tafsīr Maqāṣidī initiated by Waṣfī 'Āsyūr Abū Zaid, and to examine the relevance of this approach in addressing contemporary issues of justice. This research is a qualitative library-based study. The method employed is descriptive-analytical, applying the framework of Tafsīr Maqāṣidī Waṣfī 'Āsyūr Abū Zaid as the primary analytical tool for examining the inheritance verses (āyāt al-mawārīth) in the Qur'an alongside the interpretations of classical and contemporary exegetes (mufasirūn). The findings reveal that Abū Zaid's maqāṣidī approach views inheritance law not as rigid mathematical rules, but as an instrument to achieve noble objectives (maqāṣid) such as proportional justice (al-'adl al-tanāsubī), where the portion of inheritance is closely related to the burden of financial responsibility. This approach concludes that the spirit of sharī'ah justice can still be realized in the modern context through social ijtihad such as family deliberations (musyāwarah), grants (hibah), and wills (waṣiyyah), which align with the spirit of the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) in Indonesia. Thus, Tafsīr Maqāṣidī offers a constructive middle ground between adherence to textual authority and responsiveness to changing times.

Abstract

This study examines the reception of santri towards the tradition of reciting Asmaul Husna and the 'Twenty Verses' at the Tahfidzul Qur’an Baitul Abidin Darussalam Islamic Boarding School in Wonosobo. This dhikr, performed daily after Maghrib and Fajr prayers, is believed to have spiritual protection and inner tranquility functions. This research aims to describe the dhikr practice, analyze the variations in santri's reception, and explain the influencing factors using Hans Robert Jauss's horizon of expectation theory. A qualitative approach with phenomenological method was employed. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with 19 santri, and documentation. The findings reveal three forms of reception: dhikr as spiritual protection (14 santri), dhikr as inner tranquility (3 santri), and dhikr as pesantren obligation (2 santri). Differences in reception are influenced by duration of stay, personal religious experiences, psychological needs, and level of textual understanding. This study contributes to Living Qur’an scholarship by demonstrating that dhikr practices in pesantren are dynamic and subjective, while also proving the adaptability of Jauss's theory for the study of religious practices.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has significantly changed the way Quranic interpretations are disseminated and understood, moving from written form to syafahi interpretations disseminated through various social media platforms. This change demands a selective approach and a more contextual approach to interpretation to ensure the Quran's message remains relevant to modern society. This study examines the syafahi interpretation of the closing verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, verses 285–286, delivered by Ustadz Adi Hidayat on YouTube. It also examines the characteristics and style of his preaching from a comparative perspective between classical and contemporary interpretations. The method used is descriptive qualitative, utilizing content analysis techniques for the lecture material. The results show that Ustadz Adi Hidayat's interpretation is integrative, combining textual and spiritual dimensions, emphasizing the verse's primacy as part of prayer. His interpretation maintains continuity with classical interpretations, particularly in its use of narrations, and is closely related to contemporary interpretations in its emphasis on spiritual and psychological aspects. Therefore, this interpretation can strengthen a relevant and up-to-date understanding of the Quran.

Abstract

This study challenges the common assumption that the theoretical framework of al-aṣīl (authentic) and al-dakhīl (spurious) in Qur'anic exegesis is a purely contemporary invention pioneered by Ibrāhīm Khalīfah in the 1980s. By conducting a critical analysis of Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī's (d. 1505 CE) magnum opus, al-Itqān fī Ulūm al-Qur'ān, this research demonstrates that the core elements of this framework were systematically articulated centuries earlier. Using a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach to this library-based study, the research identifies four key components of al-aṣīl wa al-dakhīl within al-Suyūṭī's work. First, al-aṣīl encompasses interpretations grounded in linguistic sciences (naḥw, ṣarf, bayān), jurisprudence (uṣūl al-fiqh), and canonical readings (qirā'āt), alongside valid chains of transmission from the Prophet, Companions, and their successors. Second, al-dakhīl bi al-ma'thūr includes anomalous (shādhdh) and fabricated (mawḍū') traditions. Third, al-dakhīl bi al-ra'y comprises exegetical ijtihād serving sectarian interests or purely literalist readings that ignore contextual considerations. Fourth, al-dakhīl bi al-ishārah involves Sufi interpretations contradicting the Qur'an and Sunnah or those produced by unqualified exegetes. These findings position al-Suyūṭī as a significant precursor—if not a pioneer—of systematic tafsir criticism, with profound implications for evaluating contemporary Qur'anic exegesis in Indonesia's digital public sphere.

Abstract

This study is grounded in the phenomenon of declining depth in Muslim engagement with the Qur’an, which is often practiced in a ritualistic manner without meaningful reflection or internalization. In response to this gap, this study aims to analyze the implementation of The Living Qur’an Jar (TLQ Jar) as an innovative reflective medium within the Living Qur’an framework to understand the process of internalizing Qur’anic meanings in personal religious experiences in the digital age. This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological paradigm to explore users’ subjective experiences in interpreting verses, reflections, and practical actions mediated by the TLQ Jar. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation within the santri community at Al-Mawaddah Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid Probolinggo and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings reveal that TLQ Jar functions as a reflective medium facilitating the internalization of Qur’anic values through three main structures: verses, reflective insights, and practical action guides. This interaction fosters emotional calmness, increased spiritual awareness, and integration of Qur’anic values into daily life. Reflective media based on personal and visual approaches are more adaptive to digital religiosity, although challenges remain, including inconsistent reflective practices and the potential simplification of meanings. Theoretically, this study extends the Living Qur’an discourse, while practically recommending strengthened interpretive guidance and technology-based reflective tadabbur models.

Abstract

The plastic waste crisis in Indonesia has reached a critical level, driven largely by unsustainable consumption patterns that contribute to environmental degradation. This study aims to examine Qur’anic consumption ethics through the perspective of Tafsīr al-Marāgī and to contextualize them within the contemporary plastic waste crisis. The novelty of this study lies in integrating thematic exegesis with a contextual-ecological approach to interpret verses on isrāf (excess), fasād (corruption), and tabdhīr (wastefulness) as a critique of modern consumption practices, particularly the use of single-use plastics. This study employs a qualitative library-based method using a thematic exegesis approach. The primary data source is Tafsīr al-Marāgī, supported by exegetical literature, books, and relevant scholarly articles. The analysis is conducted through linguistic examination of the verses, interpretation based on al-Marāgī, and contextualization in relation to contemporary environmental issues. The findings indicate that the prohibition of isrāf emphasizes the importance of limiting consumption in alignment with environmental sustainability. The concept of fasād highlights the causal relationship between human behavior and ecological damage, while the widespread use of single-use plastics reflects a form of tabdhīr, indicating the inefficient and irresponsible use of resources. This finding suggests that Qur’anic consumption ethics remain highly relevant in promoting environmental awareness and supporting the sustainability of human life in today’s context.

Abstract

This study examines the intellectual and institutional development of the Qur'anic exegetical tradition (tafsir) in the Ottoman Empire (1299–1922), highlighting tafsir as a core discipline within the madrasa curriculum since the establishment of the Iznik Madrasa (1331). While preserving the authority of classical works such as al-Bayḍāwī’s tafsir, the tradition also developed methodologically through ḥāšiya (glosses) and šarḥ (commentaries) as instruments of scholarly verification (taḥqīq) within the framework of Sunni-Maturidi theology and the Hanafi legal school. Exegetical authority was reinforced through the Huzur Dersleri, an academic forum held before the Sultan that functioned as both scholarly engagement and theological legitimation of state policies. In the nineteenth century, responses to Western modernity encouraged more contextual approaches to tafsir, reflected in the rise of print culture, the use of the Turkish language, and its integration into modern higher education institutions such as Dârülfünûn. This research employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach based on intellectual history and bibliographical studies, utilizing ISAM and DergiPark databases alongside biographical and academic sources. The analysis is conducted diachronically and taxonomically to trace paradigm shifts and map the contributions of more than thirty key figures. The study concludes that the Ottoman tafsir tradition served as a bridge between classical Islamic scholarship and the formation of modern Islamic identity in Turkey.

Abstract

This paper examines the Qur’an’s critique of the phenomenon of neglecting prayer by addressing the theme “Between Ritual and Reality: The Qur’an’s Critique of Neglecting Prayer.” Drawing on Surah al-Ma’un, verses 4–7, this study highlights the tension between the outward ritual practice of prayer and the social and spiritual reality that should be reflected in it. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-comparative method, drawing on the interpretations of two exegetes: al-Qurt}ubi> in “Tafsi>r al-Ja>mi’ li Ah}ka>m al-Qur’a>n” and Sayyid Qut}b in “Fi> Z{ila>l al-Qur’a>n”. The findings indicate that the Qur’an’s criticism is not directed solely at those who abandon prayer, but also at those who perform it in a formalistic manner without fostering spiritual awareness or social impact. al-Qurt}ubi> emphasizes that neglect of prayer encompasses disregard for its prescribed times, pillars, and the perfection of the act of worship, which constitutes a major sin. Meanwhile, Sayyid Qut}b highlights the moral-social dimension, namely the attitude of showing off (riya’), the loss of sincerity, and indifference toward others as concrete manifestations of such negligence. Thus, prayer, from the Qur’an’s perspective, is not merely understood as a ritual act of worship but also as a manifestation of spiritual and social integrity. This critique emphasizes that the disconnect between worship and social behavior constitutes a form of negligence that leads to the threat of calamity.

Abstract

This study examines the meaning of qaulan sadīdan in Surah al-Aḥzāb: 70 and its relevance to hate speech within the framework of Qur’anic communication ethics. The study is motivated by the increasing spread of hate speech in digital spaces that damages social relations and human dignity. Using qualitative library research with a descriptive-comparative approach, this study analyzes the interpretations of qaulan sadīdan in three Indonesian tafsir works: Tafsir An-Nuur by Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy, Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab, and Tafsir Al-Azhar by Hamka. The primary data are drawn from these three tafsir works, while secondary data are taken from scholarly literature on hate speech and Islamic communication ethics. The findings show that qaulan sadīdan refers not only to truthful speech, but also to precision, honesty, moral integrity, and constructive purpose. Therefore, Surah al-Aḥzāb: 70 remains relevant as a normative foundation for ethical, healthy, and responsible communication in contemporary digital society.
