Abstract

This article examines the concept of wasatiyyah (moderation) in interfaith relations through an analysis of Tafsir Al-Wasit by Sayyid Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi. This study is significant given that partial and textual understandings of interfaith verses can generate exclusive attitudes counterproductive to social harmony, particularly within Indonesia's pluralistic society. This research employs a qualitative method with a textual (tahlili) analytical approach to three key verses QS. Al-Mumtahanah 60:8, Al-Baqarah 2:256, and Al-Ma'idah 5:51 as interpreted by Tantawi, supported by secondary data from Ash-Shabuni's Shafwat Al-Tafasir as well as reports from SETARA Institute and Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs. The findings indicate that Tafsir Al-Wasit combines a tahlili methodology with an adabi ijtima'i (socio-literary) style, constructing three pillars of wasatiyyah: justice and beneficence (al-qist wa al-birr), religious freedom (al-hurriyah al-diniyyah), and a contextual reading of leadership (wilayah) that limits restrictions on non-Muslim leadership to situations of active hostility. These three principles are relevant as a theological foundation for religious moderation policy in Indonesia, although monitoring institutions' findings indicate a persistent gap between this theological ideal and grassroots practice. The article recommends strengthening the dissemination of contextual tafsir as a strategy to reinforce interfaith harmony.

Abstract

This article examines the epistemology of Nusantara tafsir through a study of the exegetical methodology employed in Tafsir Al-Ibriz, a Javanese-language commentary written by KH. Bisri Mustofa, a prominent pesantren scholar from Rembang, Central Java, in the mid-twentieth century. While previous studies have mostly discussed the cultural locality, mystical nuances, or fiqh orientation of this work, few have analyzed it through an explicit epistemological framework. Using a qualitative library research method, this study applies Muhammad Abid al-Jabiri's tripartite epistemology of bayani, burhani, and irfani, as adapted by Abdul Mustaqim for Qur'anic exegesis, to trace the epistemic foundations underlying Tafsir Al-Ibriz. The findings show that the work is epistemologically eclectic, dominated by the bayani mode through its reliance on authoritative classical commentaries and by the irfani mode through its Sufistic and local-mystical sensibility, while the burhani (rationalistic) dimension remains comparatively subdued. This eclecticism reflects a distinctive pattern of Nusantara tafsir epistemology oriented toward cultural transmission rather than philosophical argumentation.

Abstract

This study examines M. Quraish Shihab’s interpretation of three communication prohibitions in QS. Al-Hujurat [49]: 11—as-sukhriyah, al-lamz, and at-tanābuz bil-alqāb—and their relevance to contemporary verbal violence. It focuses on the conceptual relationship among the three prohibitions in Tafsir Al-Misbah and their contribution to Islamic communication ethics. This qualitative library research uses the Qur’an and Tafsir Al-Misbah as primary sources, supported by exegetical works, Arabic dictionaries, books, journal articles, and other relevant literature. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis through identification, categorization, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that as-sukhriyah, al-lamz, and at-tanābuz bil-alqāb are not separate prohibitions but form an integrated communication ethics oriented toward preserving human dignity (hifz al-‘irḍ), strengthening ukhuwah, and preventing various forms of humiliation. The main root of these prohibitions is a sense of superiority over others. This interpretation is relevant for reading contemporary verbal violence such as cyberbullying, body shaming, hate speech, and derogatory nicknames in digital media. Therefore, QS. Al-Hujurat [49]: 11 can serve as a normative foundation for building respectful, ethical, and dignified communication culture.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of the concept of Maryam’s karāmah from the perspective of Fakhruddin al-Razi through his interpretation of Qur'an Surah Āli ‘Imrān verses 37–42 and Surah Maryam verses 16–26. The study is motivated by several extraordinary events experienced by Maryam, including the appearance of sustenance in the miḥrāb, the announcement of the birth of Isa, the emergence of a spring, and the provision of dates, which raise theological questions concerning whether these events should be understood as karāmah or as signs related to the prophethood of Isa. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research and thematic interpretation (tafsīr mawḍū‘ī). The primary source is Fakhruddin al-Razi’s Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb, while supporting data are drawn from Qur’anic commentaries, works of Islamic theology, books, and relevant scholarly articles. The analysis identifies al-Razi’s interpretation of the relevant verses, categorizes the extraordinary events experienced by Maryam, and reconstructs his arguments in distinguishing karāmah, mu‘jizah, and irhāṣ. The findings demonstrate that al-Razi constructs the concept of Maryam’s karāmah through a theological distinction between the characteristics of mu‘jizah and karāmah. The extraordinary events experienced by Maryam cannot be classified as mu‘jizah because they are not associated with a claim to prophethood. Instead, al-Razi maintains two possibilities: that they constitute karāmah granted to Maryam or irhāṣ associated with the prophethood of Isa. Thus, al-Razi’s interpretation demonstrates that extraordinary occurrences may be granted to a righteous servant of God without making that person a prophet, while simultaneously affirming the conceptual distinction between karāmah and mu‘jizah.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and functions of stylistics in the story of Dhu al-Qarnayn in Surah Al-Kahf verses 83–99 and to examine how these linguistic elements contribute to the construction of meaning and the characterization of Dhu al-Qarnayn’s leadership. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using library research. The primary data consist of the Qur’anic verses narrating the story of Dhu al-Qarnayn in Surah Al-Kahf verses 83–99, while the secondary data include classical Qur’anic commentaries, books, and previous studies related to Qur’anic stylistics. The analysis is conducted through four stylistic levels: phonology, lexical preference, sentence preference, and deviation. The findings demonstrate that the story of Dhu al-Qarnayn employs various linguistic strategies, including sound harmony, lexical repetition, word selection, variations in sentence structure, ellipsis, imperative expressions, and different forms of linguistic deviation. These stylistic elements not only create aesthetic harmony and rhythmic effects but also strengthen meaning, intensify narrative dynamics, and emphasize the actions of the main character. Overall, the stylistic construction of the story portrays Dhu al-Qarnayn as a leader who is just, wise, responsible, and conscious that his power is ultimately granted by Allah. This study demonstrates that a stylistic approach can reveal the interconnectedness between the linguistic forms of the Qur’an and their aesthetic, semantic, and narrative functions in conveying moral and spiritual messages.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of ulī al-amri in the Qur'an through Qur'anic exegesis using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The study is motivated by the diversity of interpretations of ulī al-amri in the exegetical tradition, which has generally been examined from a normative perspective rather than through semiotic analysis. The novelty of this research lies in applying Peirce's semiotic theory to explain the construction of the meaning of ulī al-amri through the relationship between the sign, object, and interpretant. This qualitative library research draws on Qur'an Surah al-Nisā’ [4]: 59 and 83, classical and contemporary Qur'anic commentaries, and Peirce's major works. The findings reveal that the meaning of ulī al-amri is dynamic and shaped by social, political, and intellectual contexts. In the exegetical tradition, it refers to political leaders, religious scholars (ʿulamāʾ), the Prophet's Companions, ahl al-ḥall wa al-ʿaqd, experts in istinbāṭ, and authorities responsible for public affairs and information. The study concludes that Peirce's semiotic approach broadens the understanding of ulī al-amri as a sign of authority constructed through semiosis, interpretive traditions, and social realities, producing a more contextual, flexible, and relevant interpretation of contemporary leadership.

Abstract

This study examines the meaning of minority group victory in the Qur’an through a semantic analysis of the word ghalaba in QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 249 and links it with the theory of minority influence in social psychology. Using the Qur’anic semantic approach pioneered by Toshihiko Izutsu (Izutsu, 2002), this research traces the basic meaning, relational meaning, semantic field, and weltanschauung of the Qur’an concerning the victory of a small group (fi’ah qalilah) over a large group (fi’ah katsirah). Primary data, consisting of the verse text and its interpretations in classical and modern tafsir works, were analyzed qualitatively and descriptively through content analysis combined with an intertextual approach to the Qur’an (tafsir al-Qur’an bi al-Qur’an). The findings show that ghalaba in the context of verse 249 does not merely refer to physical-militaristic victory, but rather to a qualitative superiority born of steadfast faith, patience (shabr), and conviction in God’s permission (idznillah), rather than merely a function of troop numbers. The study also finds a conceptual convergence between the pattern of minority victory in the Qur’an and Serge Moscovici’s minority influence theory (Moscovici, 1976), especially in the dimensions of behavioral style, consistency of attitude, and the process of social conversion, although the two rest on different epistemological foundations: transcendental-theological in the Qur’an and psychosocial-empirical in social psychology. This study offers an interdisciplinary dialogical framework between Qur’anic exegesis and social psychology for understanding the dynamics of social change driven by small groups with firm conviction.
