Abstract

Axiology, as a branch of philosophy, means the knowledge that philosophically explores the 'values' inherent in something. This implies a critical, rational, and speculative examination. Axiology provides benefits in order to anticipate negative developments in human life. Broadly speaking, axiology is divided into two fields, namely ethics and aesthetics. The discussion of these two fields has different starting points between Islamic scholarship and modern Western science. In the construction of Islamic scholarship, knowledge operates within the framework of the Islamic paradigm, where knowledge directly derives from the Qur'an as a revelation text. In the Western historical context, the emergence of the Enlightenment period in the 17th century, which transformed into modernity, became a dividing line between science and religion in the West. This event is interpreted as a rebellion of humanity against God (Christianity), with modernity being the offspring of this rebellious spirit born from the Renaissance. Using a literary approach, this article explores insights by conducting a comparative analysis between the two perspectives. The result indicates that the starting point for ethics as a branch of philosophy is reason, not religion, while Islamic ethics is grounded in the Qur'an and hadith.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpretive method used by Ibn Kathir in explaining Surah Al-Baqarah verse 172, which discusses the command to consume good (halal) sustenance and the importance of gratitude to Allah SWT. The interpretive method used by Ibn Kathir in his work, Tafsir Al-Qur'an al-Azim, is known as tafsir bi al-ma'tsur, which emphasizes the use of authentic narrations from the Qur'an, hadith, and the opinions of the companions and tabi'in (successors). This study employs a qualitative approach with a literature review method to trace Ibn Kathir's interpretive sources and compare them with other exegeses to gain a deeper understanding. The analysis shows that Ibn Kathir integrates the interpretation of Qur'anic verses with textual and historical approaches, utilizing hadith narrations and asbab al-nuzul (circumstances of revelation) to explain the context of the verse. Furthermore, Ibn Kathir links the meaning of the verse with the principles of Islamic law concerning halal and haram food, as well as its spiritual implications, namely gratitude as an essential form of worship. This approach provides a comprehensive and in-depth view of how Islamic values are applied in the daily life of Muslims. The study concludes that Ibn Kathir's interpretive method offers a clear and authoritative guide to understanding the content of the Qur'an, particularly in relation to the aspects of Sharia and aqidah in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 172. This analysis also affirms the relevance of Ibn Kathir's exegesis in the development of contemporary Qur'anic studies and its contribution to building a holistic understanding of Islamic teachings.

Abstract

This article explores the thoughts of Muhammad Iqbal, a modern scholar, in the context of Islamic theology (kalam), utilizing library research methods and a qualitative approach. Iqbal emphasizes the importance of revitalizing and reconstructing Islamic theology to face modern challenges and address the limitations of classical kalam thought, which he finds overly speculative. He critiques the classical approach dominated by metaphysical speculation and deductive argumentation, advocating for a more relevant approach to human and social issues. This research is analytical and takes an emic perspective, where data is obtained based on conceptual and theoretical facts from analyzed literature. Iqbal introduces the concept of the ego as the center of human life organization and stresses the importance of creative activity as part of divine activity. Iqbal's ideas inspire the development of a more anthropocentric and responsive kalam to contemporary Western discourse and socio-political issues.
