Abstract

Group Discussions (FGD) and hands-on maggot cultivation practice. The educational component covers an understanding of the BSF life cycle and the benefits of maggot cultivation as a high-nutrient alternative livestock feed. In practice, the community is taught how to cultivate maggots from the egg stage to larvae and how to utilize them to reduce organic waste. The program results show that maggots can decompose approximately 80% of the organic waste provided, with faster growth rates observed in maggots fed carbohydrate-based waste compared to vegetable waste. Additionally, community participation was relatively positive, with several residents expressing interest in independently cultivating maggots. Despite the program’s success in increasing community awareness and skills, several challenges remain, such as low participation in maggot cultivation practices, limited access to maggot seeds, and odor management in the cultivation media. Therefore, more interactive educational strategies, improved seed availability, and better feed management are needed. Overall, maggot cultivation has the potential to be a sustainable solution for organic waste management, improving environmental cleanliness, and providing economic benefits for the residents of Padukuhan Balong

Abstract

The waste problem in Yogyakarta, especially in Dusun Klangkapan II, is an issue that requires immediate solutions. Waste that continues to increase without proper management can cause environmental pollution, such as air, soil, and water pollution, which has the potential to endanger the health of the surrounding community. Organic and inorganic waste that is not handled properly can also cause unpleasant odors and become a breeding ground for various diseases. To overcome this problem, the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Community Service (KKN) team conducted a waste management program based on alternative, low-smoke waste incinerators. This program aims to educate the public about the importance of waste processing, as well as provide solutions in the form of more environmentally friendly combustion technology. The implementation of this program involves various methods such as community outreach, direct training related to the use of the tool, and regular assistance to ensure the effectiveness of its use. The alternative, low-smoke waste incinerator is designed with a multi-stage combustion system that is more efficient than conventional combustion methods. This technology helps reduce air pollution from indiscriminate waste burning, which often produces excess smoke and toxic gases. The evaluation results of this program show that the community is beginning to understand the importance of sorting and managing their waste in a more effective and environmentally friendly way. With this program, it is hoped that the people of Dusun Klangkapan II can independently manage their household waste, so that the surrounding environment becomes cleaner and healthier. Awareness and active involvement of the community in the waste management process are the keys to the sustainability of this program in the future

Abstract

The community service program conducted by the service team of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta aimed to raise awareness and enhance community skills in transforming used materials into valuable handicraft products. This program was implemented in Dusun Manggis, Kadipaten Village, Wonosobo Regency, in response to the low public awareness regarding non-organic waste management. Items such as plastic bottle caps, used plastic spoons, and waste paper are still often discarded despite their potential economic value when processed creatively. The program adopted a participatory approach through training, workshops, and mentoring that actively involved local residents, particularly the women from the Kelompok Wanita Tani (KWT). The implementation methods included field surveys, focus group discussions (FGDs), hands-on craft-making practices, and educational sessions on the importance of waste sorting and processing. The outcomes showed that the community began producing recycled crafts such as pencil holders, flower vases, and tissue boxes. This initiative not only improved environmental awareness but also created new economic opportunities for the villagers. Strong community engagement and the easy availability of raw materials in the surrounding area were key supporting factors in the program's success. It is expected that this initiative will have a long-term impact in fostering a culture of recycling and encouraging community-driven innovations for environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Dukuh Slametan, Gatak Village, Ngawen District, Klaten, faces significant challenges in managing plastic waste, most residents use the practice of burning waste as the main solution. In addition, the lack of awareness and lack of skills in implementing more environmentally friendly waste management practices is a significant challenge, so this community service program aims to provide a solution by introducing the Ecobrick method as a more sustainable alternative in managing plastic waste. This program uses a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach, which includes socialization, focus group discussions (FGDs), Ecobrick making training, and monitoring and evaluation of community participation and program effectiveness. The main objective of this program is to increase community awareness and technical skills in making Ecobricks, with program results evaluated based on the level of participation and the number of Ecobricks successfully made. Of the 40 targeted residents, 30 people participated in the training, producing 44 ecobrick bottles which were then used to make three chairs for use in the surrounding environment. The evaluation results showed a substantial increase in community awareness of the detrimental consequences of burning plastic waste, accompanied by an appreciation of the benefits of ecobricks as an alternative solution, in addition, the program has succeeded in reducing the volume of plastic waste that was previously burned. However, several obstacles remain, including the scarcity of adequate plastic bottle raw materials, the challenge of achieving optimal ecobrick density, and the difficulty of fostering long-term commitment among residents to perpetuate the implementation of this methodology. To increase the effectiveness of the program, further support from the government and environmental organizations is needed, in the form of ongoing educational initiatives and incentives for active community participation. With a more systematic approach, ecobricks have the potential to become a sustainable solution that is implemented not only in Dusun Slametan, but also in other areas that face similar challenges in plastic waste management
