Abstract

Personal hygiene is an activity carried out by individuals to improve comfort, quality of life, and body health. This effort is carried out to ensure individual comfort and health by maintaining and taking care for personal hygiene. Personal hygiene includes maintaining the health of the body, such as hands and oral hygiene, which can be implemented through Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS). Clean and healthy living behaviors play a crucial role in the prevention of various diseases, such as diarrhea, worms, dental caries, and other infectious diseases that can be transmitted through hands. Therefore, education about PHBS is very necessary so that this behavior can be applied and become a habit in daily life. However, there are still many bad habits in maintaining personal hygiene, especially hand and mouth hygiene among children and the people of Dukuh Jetis, Trimurti, Srandakan, Bantul. Based on these problems, the community engagement program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta focuses on increasing hand and oral hygiene awareness in Dukuh Jetis. The purpose of this program is to increase awareness of PHBS, especially hands and mouths in children and empower PKK (Family Welfare Empowerment) mothers through homemade soap making training as an effort to increase access to hygiene in the household. The method used is counseling with active interaction to students of Al-Aysar IT Kindergarten and Elementary School which is carried out by demonstrating how to wash hands in 6 steps and how to brush teeth correctly. Meanwhile, the training on making homemade soap was carried out with an explanation of the material and continued with group practice using simple ingredients to make soap. The results of the community service program in PHBS counseling activities can be seen from the increase in the understanding rate of Kindergarten and Elementary School IT Al-Aysar Dukuh Jetis students who were tested before the program, namely the average pretest was 74.6 with the results tested after the program, namely the average posttest was 76.5. In the Homemade Soap Making Training activity, a pretest with an average result of 50.9 and a posttest with an average result of 78.6 was carried out. There was an increase in the understanding of counseling and training participants as seen from the results of the pretest and posttest conducted before and after the activity was carried out.

Abstract

Rebobong Lor Hamlet has a relatively high prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, diabetes, and gout. Environmental factors, including a high smoking rate and a sedentary lifestyle, are the primary contributors to these health problems. Economic limitations often become barriers to raising awareness about the importance of health. Rebobong Lor faces serious challenges in health education, as there is currently no well-organized system in place. The lack of public awareness regarding proper health practices further worsens the situation. Therefore, health education has become an urgent need to support overall community well-being. This community service program serves as a practical implementation of the theoretical knowledge gained by students during their academic studies. In this program, health was chosen as the central theme by the entire community service team. The health education initiative aimed to improve public awareness and knowledge of various health-related issues. The methods used in this outreach included the delivery of educational materials supported by various learning media, such as laptops, sound systems, digital presentations (PowerPoint), and posters. Evaluation results showed an increase in health knowledge among the residents of Rebobong Lor Hamlet following the education sessions on NCDs, particularly hypertension and diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

This outreach program aims to enhance the understanding of Dusun Kopeng residents regarding the prevention and control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in livestock. FMD is a contagious disease that can cause significant economic losses for farmers, especially in areas like Dusun Kopeng, where the majority of the community depends on beef cattle farming for their livelihoods. Therefore, the community service team from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) conducted a socialization program to empower the community with knowledge about FMD. The objective of this program is to improve farmers’ understanding of FMD prevention and management. The methods employed in this community service initiative included interviews, observations, and direct community outreach. The results of the program indicate that the outreach activities successfully raised community awareness and capacity in preventing and managing FMD through early detection, proper barn sanitation, and timely reporting of symptoms to veterinary officers. This program is expected to support the sustainability of livestock farming and improve the well-being of the Dusun Kopeng community. The FMD outreach program in Dusun Kopeng has effectively equipped local farmers with essential knowledge for preventing and controlling a disease that poses a serious threat to their livestock.

Abstract

The shift in disease patterns from infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is one of the challenges faced in health development today. NCDs have become a global health threat that has been continuously increasing over the past few decades. Conditions such as diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, high cholesterol, and uric acid disorders no longer affect only the elderly population but are also becoming more common among younger age groups due to changes in people's lifestyles. Randusongo Hamlet is located in Donokerto Village, Turi District, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Donokerto Village consists of sixteen hamlets, one of which is Randusongo Hamlet. Based on field observations, the health conditions in this hamlet are relatively good, as evidenced by activities such as healthy exercise programs and the formation of health cadre groups consisting of women from the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) community organization. Several aspects need attention in relation to NCDs and PHBS (Clean and Healthy Living Behavior). The non-communicable diseases in this case include hypertension, diabetes, and others. Meanwhile, PHBS is related to the ten programs from the Ministry of Health, such as physical activity, smoking cessation, clean water access, nutritious food consumption, and more. This report was created using the cross-sectional method, which involves observing variables at a single point in time without implementing any specific interventions. The community empowerment activities we conducted in Randusongo Hamlet primarily focused on existing health issues. Broadly speaking, the activities centered on three main aspects that have been identified as key issues in the hamlet: obesity, NCDs, and environmental health. Our community empowerment initiatives included health education to improve the knowledge of Randusongo residents, along with its implementation through health check-ups and self-examinations for NCD prevention. Additionally, we supported volleyball activities in the hamlet to help prevent obesity and established a waste donation program to promote environmental health.

Abstract

he community service program titled “Sehati (Sehat Tanpa PTM Periksa Kesehatan Lagi)” was implemented in response to the high prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Gatak Village, Ngawen District. The program aimed to raise awareness and enhance public understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and early detection of NCDs such as hypertension, diabetes, uric acid, and high cholesterol. The methods employed included health education, physical activity through regular aerobic exercises, free health screenings, and blood donation events. Activities were carried out in a participatory and interactive manner, involving local residents at every stage, from outreach to mentoring. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in knowledge, attitudes, and health-related behaviors among the community. Around 50 individuals regularly participated in weekly exercise sessions, and the health screenings showed improvements in key indicators for many participants. The blood donation event, conducted in collaboration with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), successfully collected 80 bags of blood and raised awareness about the social and health benefits of blood donation. Comprehensive evaluation revealed that this educational approach combined with direct intervention was effective in promoting healthy behavior changes and presented opportunities for sustainable local health policy development. The success of this program highlights the effectiveness of integrating education, screening, and community empowerment as a strategy to reduce NCD rates in rural areas.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases that contribute to high mortality and health complications, especially in the elderly. Based on observations and discussions with community leaders and posyandu cadres, it was found that the incidence of hypertension in Cabean Hamlet is quite high. Therefore, this KKN program emphasizes hypertension counseling, elderly gymnastics, family care for people with hypertension, and balanced nutrition education as the main strategies in preventing and treating hypertension. The purpose of the Community Service Program (KKN) in Cabean Hamlet, Bumirejo, Lendah, Kulon Progo is to increase public awareness about hypertension so that it can reduce mortality and complications due to hypertension. The methods used in this program include educational approaches and hypertension screening. The educative approach was conducted through lectures and interactive discussions about hypertension and a healthy diet to prevent hypertension. Hypertension screening was carried out through blood pressure checks (which were carried out before and after the elderly gymnastics) and measurement of body weight and height. The results of the activity showed that there was an increase in public awareness about hypertension. The results of blood pressure checks showed a decrease in blood pressure in most participants after doing elderly exercises, with an increase in the percentage of blood pressure becoming normal (from 38.9% to 58.3%). In addition, in the family care program, two elderly people who were monitored showed different results, one had improved blood pressure after routinely taking antihypertensive drugs, while the other continued to have high blood pressure due to non-compliance with treatment. The results showed that there are still some residents with non-ideal nutritional status, both obese and malnourished, who are at risk of hypertension. In conclusion, the service-learning program succeeded in raising community awareness about hypertension and had a positive impact on lowering the blood pressure of the elderly through comprehensive interventions. The success of this program shows the importance of the role of family and community in supporting sustainable public health.

Abstract

Stunting, a long-term nutritional condition that has an impact on children's growth, is characterized by a height that is lower than age standards due to ongoing nutritional deficiencies. In Srunggo 2 Hamlet, Selopamioro Village, Kapanewon Imogiri, Bantul Regency, this problem still occurs a lot. This is caused by the high rate of early marriage, lack of understanding and nutritional literacy among mothers and young women, and lack of public awareness of the importance of balanced nutrition. Through the Community Feeding Center (CFC) program, this community effort aims to increase nutritional awareness and increase access to healthy food. This program teaches the importance of balanced nutrition, assistance to pregnant women and toddlers, and good nutrition for children's growth. Apart from that, information about stunting, healthy eating patterns, and the importance of consuming blood supplement tablets for pregnant women and young women to prevent anemia, one of the risk factors for stunting in children, has been disseminated. The results of the activity show that the community better understands the importance of balanced nutrition, as shown by increased participation in education and changes to healthier eating patterns. Apart from that, pregnant women and young women are more aware of consuming blood supplement tablets regularly. It is hoped that with the existence of the Community Feeding Center and this educational program, community behavior will change in terms of parenting patterns and fulfilling children's nutrition. Thus, in the long term, the stunting rate in Srunggo 2 Hamlet can be reduced significantly.

Abstract

The Thematic Regular Community Service Program Group 166 of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) conducted a community service program in Klaci II Hamlet, Margoluwih, Seyegan, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The program focused on organic and inorganic waste management to address environmental pollution issues. Two primary approaches were implemented: the creation of biopore infiltration holes and the establishment of a waste bank. This initiative aimed to improve waste management practices, reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, and create a cleaner and more sustainable environment. The methods employed included three main stages: education, demonstration, and consistency. The education stage involved raising public awareness about the benefits of biopores and waste banks, including flood risk reduction and soil quality improvement. Demonstrations were conducted through hands-on activities in creating biopore infiltration holes in several neighborhoods within Klaci II Hamlet. The consistency stage involved regular monitoring of biopore holes and evaluating their environmental and economic impacts. The waste bank program was designed to encourage active community participation by offering incentives for sorting and recycling waste with economic value. This activity was held weekly, involving various community groups to foster habits of recycling and proper waste management. The results showed increased community awareness regarding waste management, the use of organic waste as compost, and reduced environmental pollution. Through a community-based approach, this program successfully fostered behavioral changes in waste management practices in Klaci II Hamlet. Beyond providing direct benefits to the local community, this model has the potential to be replicated in other regions as a sustainable solution for addressing waste management issues. By collaborating with the community, the program not only enhanced environmental quality but also strengthened communal independence in preserving the environment.

Abstract

Increasing public awareness of environmental health in Kampung Gambiran RW 10 has become a major challenge due to poor waste management, which poses a risk of environmental pollution. This issue is exacerbated by the lack of waste segregation at the source and the limited availability of efficient waste processing technologies. Therefore, this community engagement program aims to enhance public awareness and skills in waste management through the implementation of pyrolysis technology and vegetable planting using the polybag method. The methods employed in this program include a focus group discussion (FGD) with community leaders, field observations, socialization on pyrolysis and waste segregation, and a practical demonstration of polybag planting with the Women's Farmer Group (KWT). The results of this program indicate an increased understanding among residents regarding plastic waste management using pyrolysis technology, which enables the conversion of waste into oil as an alternative fuel. Additionally, the provision of waste segregation bags has encouraged the community to separate waste at the household level. Meanwhile, the polybag vegetable planting activity has provided a solution for utilizing limited land for household-scale urban agriculture, which is expected to improve food security and urban greening. The program culminated in the "Gambiran Waste Awareness" event, which included a parade and a recycled waste competition, fostering active community participation in maintaining environmental cleanliness. Overall, this initiative has yielded measurable positive impacts, both quantitatively, as reflected in the number of participants involved in socialization and practical activities, and qualitatively, through increased awareness and behavioral changes toward better environmental management.
