Abstract

The community of Padukuhan Bandaran can now sort waste independently, where the collected waste is transported to the TPST (Integrated Waste Disposal Site). Inorganic waste has its own management, while organic waste has not been processed, so the waste will be disposed of without any further efforts. The community in Padukuhan Bandaran has not been able to utilize organic waste optimally, even though organic waste can be used to be processed into liquid fertilizer or compost. Seeing conditions like this, it not only has an impact on environmental pollution but can also cause health problems for the community. This community service program aims to contribute to efforts to increase knowledge and awareness of environmental cleanliness through the utilization of household waste produced by the community in Padukuhan Bandaran. The method used is to conduct socialization and practice in processing organic waste. The level of community participation, knowledge, and awareness were measured before and after the implementation of the program. The results obtained from the socialization activities showed a significant increase in all aspects observed. The participation aspect showed good results, this was indicated by the participation of 29 people in the socialization activities. The aspect of community knowledge increased, this was indicated by the results of the pre-test and post-test carried out. The aspect of increasing public awareness, this is indicated by the emergence of enthusiasm to try the organic waste processing method of stacked buckets and losida. This program provides a foundation for sustainable waste processing so that a better environment can be created. The sustainability of the program is directed at habituating the community so that this activity can become routine and be emulated by communities in other areas.

Abstract

The socialization and implementation of biogas technology in Dukuh Jambu was carried out as a solution to the issue of poorly managed organic waste from livestock farming and the high dependence of the community on fossil fuels. The main goal of this program is to increase awareness and skills among the community in processing livestock waste into environmentally friendly and economical renewable energy. The methods used in this program include socialization, technical training, and the installation of a non-fixed dome biodigester-based biogas system, which is more flexible, easier to install, and more affordable compared to the fixed dome system. This activity involves active community participation, both in the installation process and in outreach activities related to the utilization and maintenance of the biogas system. The results of the program show that the implemented biogas system is capable of producing sufficient methane gas for household needs, with an average daily production of 1 cubic meter per biodigester unit. Additionally, the fermentation residue can be utilized as organic fertilizer, which enhances soil fertility and increases local agricultural productivity. Another positive impact is the reduction of environmental pollution caused by the accumulation of livestock waste and fuel cost savings for the community, where households using biogas experienced a reduction in LPG consumption by up to 50%. Although this program faced challenges such as the initial lack of knowledge among the community and technical issues in system maintenance, intensive outreach and mentoring efforts successfully improved the community's understanding and skills in managing the biogas system independently. This program has the potential to be further developed by expanding the application of biogas to more households and small businesses. The proposed follow-up actions include enhancing community capacity through advanced training, integrating biogas with sustainable agriculture, and strengthening government policy support to enable wider adoption of this technology. Therefore, this program not only contributes to better waste management but also serves as a strategic step in promoting the transition to clean and sustainable energy

Abstract

The increasing problem of organic waste has become a serious challenge for the environment and agriculture in various parts of the world. These improper disposal practices cause significant environmental pollution, including soil and water pollution, as well as waste accumulation that disrupts public health. On the other hand, the demand for organic fertilizers to support sustainable agriculture is increasing. Sustainable agriculture emphasizes environmentally friendly practices, including the use of organic fertilizers to maintain soil fertility and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. The excessive use of chemical fertilizers has been proven to damage soil structure, reduce biodiversity, and pollute water sources. The goal of this program is to enhance public understanding of the importance of agricultural waste management and to provide basic skills in making compost and manure fertilizers. This program also aims to create a more self-sufficient agricultural system by utilizing locally available resources. In addition, the existence of this activity is expected to encourage increased public awareness in maintaining the balance of the agricultural ecosystem by utilizing waste that has not been maximally utilized so far. The methods used in this approach include seminars and demonstrations. Demonstrations were conducted to provide the community with skills in making compost and manure from organic waste available in their surroundings. Through demonstrations, the community can learn directly about the composting process, material mixing techniques, and how to properly manage manure. The results of this activity show an increase in the community's knowledge and skills in processing organic waste into fertilizer. Additionally, there is a heightened awareness among the community about the importance of sustainable waste management and environmentally friendly farming practices. The community is beginning to change their perspective on the use of organic waste as an alternative fertilizer that is more environmentally friendly and economical. This is evidenced by the willingness of several farmers to try applying this technique in their agricultural land, as well as the initiative of the farmer group leader in forming small farmer groups to independently produce compost fertilizer. This activity is expected to make a tangible contribution in reducing the volume of organic waste sent to landfills, improving soil fertility, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers, and supporting the creation of a more environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural system.

Abstract

Plastic waste is one type of waste that is difficult to decompose and is a serious environmental problem. In Sumberejo Village, Batur District, Banjarnegara, the problem of plastic waste is still difficult to overcome, even in the conservation area there are piles of garbage. Household waste production is the main cause of the accumulation of waste, people who do not understand and are lazy to sort waste are the main reasons for the piles of plastic waste. One solution to reduce the negative impact of plastic waste is to process it into useful building materials, one of which is paving blocks. This community service aims to study the potential for utilizing plastic waste as a basic material for paving blocks, with the hope of reducing the amount of plastic waste that pollutes the environment while providing an alternative environmentally friendly material in the construction world. The methods used in this community service include collecting plastic waste, cleaning, and shredding plastic into smaller forms. The processed plastic is then mixed with aggregate and cement in a certain composition to produce paving blocks. Tests are carried out to determine the compressive strength, durability, and physical stability of the resulting paving blocks. The results of the community service show that paving blocks made from plastic waste have quite good compressive strength and meet the standards set for paving block materials. In addition, the use of plastic waste in making paving blocks provides dual benefits, namely reducing plastic pollution in the environment and providing cheaper and more environmentally friendly construction materials. Therefore, the use of plastic waste as a paving block material can be an innovative solution in overcoming the problem of plastic waste while supporting more sustainable development in Sumberejo Village. Community acceptance of plastic-based paving blocks has proven positive, especially after trials in the local environment. This community service contributes to better plastic waste management and offers new economic opportunities in the construction sector, while supporting sustainable development in Sumberejo Village, Batur District, Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java.

Abstract

This community service program was carried out by the team of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) with the aim of helping the people of Padukuhan Dukuhsari, Wonokerto Sub-district, Turi District, Sleman Regency, in overcoming the problem of fruit fly pests that threaten salak plants. This problem originated from the high level of salak fruit damage caused by the fruit fly pest Bactrocera dorsalis. This pest attacks plants by laying eggs inside the fruit, which then hatch into larvae and damage the fruit from the inside. This condition has a significant impact on reducing the yield of salak farmers in the region.Overcoming this problem, the UMY team initiated an environmentally friendly innovation-based community empowerment program by utilizing used bottles as fruit fly traps. This program involves three main stages, namely socialization, training, and evaluation. At the socialization stage, the community gained an understanding of the characteristics of fruit fly pests, their impact on salak plants, and how to effectively control them. The training was followed by the practice of making traps using key materials such as used bottles, petrogenol as an attractant, insecticide, and insecticidal adhesive as a binding agent. The traps were designed to be installed at various strategic points in the salak orchard. The evaluation was conducted by monitoring the number of fruit flies trapped for six days in five different locations. The results showed that the location with the highest number of trapped fruit flies was Kebun Salak Belakang Pendopo more than 41%, which is thought to have many alternative host plants for the pest. Weather factors and food availability also affected the number of flies captured. The program received a positive response from the community, who enthusiastically participated in the socialization activities and trap-making practices. With this innovation, it is hoped that the community can reduce dependence on excessive chemical pesticides, increase salak yields, and utilize plastic waste effectively to support sustainable agriculture
