Abstract

Children with Special Needs (ABK) require special treatment not only in medical aspects, but also psychosocial and motor aspects. In Sukomulyo Health Center, Gresik Regency, there is a forum called "ABK Love Community" which houses parents and special children. The partner's problem is the lack of variety of therapeutic activities that are recreational and preserve local culture, where activities are often focused on monotonous medical therapy. This community service offers a solution in the form of learning the "Jamuran" Dolanan Dance. The Jamuran Dance was chosen because it contains elements of gross motor movements (walking in circles, holding hands, squatting, standing) and intense social interaction. The implementation method of this community service includes: (1) Preparation and location survey, (2) Socialization to parents/community, (3) Training and mentoring of dance movements (fieldwork), and (4) Evaluation and simple performances. The learning process is carried out with a joyful learning approach (fun learning) and repetition (repetition) considering the diverse characteristics of ABK (Autism, Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation). The results of this community service show an increase in children's enthusiasm for movement, gross motor skills that are more stimulated through the dynamic movements of the Jamuran dance, as well as increased emotional bonds between children, parents, and peers. The Jamuran dance has proven effective as a fun, local culture-based alternative therapy medium for the ABK Love Community at the Sukomulyo Community Health Center.

Abstract

Arts and culture education, particularly dance, frequently faces the obstacle of monotonous, teacher-centered instruction and an imbalance between theory and practice, resulting in suboptimal student learning outcomes. This study aims to describe the implementation of the project based learning (PjBL) model and the resulting learning outcomes in cultural arts (dance) among twelfth-grade students at an Islamic-based madrasah whose movement vocabulary is deliberately constrained by religious values. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, validated by source and technique triangulation. The findings show that PjBL implementation, carried out through the stages of essential questioning, project design, scheduling, progress monitoring, product presentation, and evaluation of the learning experience, was able to improve student learning outcomes across three domains: cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. Students demonstrated improved movement-analysis ability, motor skills synchronized with rhythm, and stronger teamwork and responsibility, all while preserving the propriety and religious values upheld by the school. The study affirms that PjBL can be contextually adapted as an effective model for creative dance instruction in Islamic educational settings with restricted movement vocabularies.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the concept and process of the re-choreography of the Kiprah Lengger Dance created by Peni Priyono as an effort to preserve Pendhalungan traditional arts in Probolinggo City. This research is motivated by the process of condensing and restructuring the Kiprah Lengger Dance while maintaining its identity, characteristics, and cultural values. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. This research applied Jacqueline Smith’s (1985) construction method theory to analyze the re-choreography process and the choreography concepts consisting of unity, variation, repetition, contrast, sequence, climax, balance, and harmony to examine the concept of the Kiprah Lengger Dance. The results of the study indicate that the concept of the rechoreography of the Kiprah Lengger Dance remains grounded in the spirit of preserving traditional arts by maintaining the essence, characteristics, and identity of the dance. Based on the analysis of choreography concepts, the Kiprah Lengger Dance demonstrates elements of unity, variation, repetition, contrast, sequence, climax, balance, and harmony that form a cohesive choreographic structure. Furthermore, based on Jacqueline Smith’s construction method theory, the re-choreography process was carried out through stages of dance stimuli, motif development, and the restructuring of choreographic forms. The re-choreography was realized through the selection and condensation of movements, simplification of repetitive sections, integration of similar movement motifs, and adjustment of the performance structure to make it more effective and communicative. The result of the re-choreography is a performance that is more concise and efficient while still preserving the aesthetic values, characteristics, and cultural spirit inherent in the Kiprah Lengger Dance. Keywords: rechoreography, movement condensation, Kiprah Lengger Dance, Pendhalungan, preservation of traditional art.

Abstract

The diversity of student characteristics in dance extracurricular activities, both in terms of abilities, interests, and learning styles, requires adaptive learning strategies so that each student can develop according to their potential. This study aims to describe the implementation of a differentiated learning strategy in dance extracurricular activities at SMA Negeri 2 Lumajang, identify supporting and inhibiting factors, and analyze student learning outcomes through its implementation. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive approach. The research location was SMA Negeri 2 Lumajang, with subjects consisting of dance extracurricular instructors and students actively participating in the activities. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was achieved through triangulation of sources and techniques. The results showed that instructors implemented a differentiated learning strategy through differentiation of content, process, product, and learning environment tailored to students' abilities, interests, and characteristics. Supporting factors for the implementation of this strategy included school support, student motivation, instructor creativity, and collaboration among students. Inhibiting factors included differences in student abilities, limited facilities, limited practice time, and psychological challenges. The implementation of a differentiated learning strategy had a positive impact on improving students' dance skills, creativity, self-confidence, collaboration, and responsibility. Thus, differentiated learning is an effective and relevant approach to accommodate student diversity in dance extracurricular activities and support the implementation of the Independent Curriculum.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital media has created new opportunities for preserving local cultures, particularly through audiovisual content produced in regional languages. In Indonesia, the declining use of regional languages among younger generations has raised concerns regarding the sustainability of local cultural identity. This study investigates the role of regional-language short films in preserving local culture through a case study of Pertunangan Dini, a Madurese-language short film published on the Ponca Temor YouTube channel. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research collected data through in-depth interviews with the film's production team and audience members, complemented by observation and document analysis. The analysis was informed by Pierre Bourdieu's Cultural Capital Theory, Henry Jenkins' Convergence Culture Theory, and Stuart Hall's Reception Theory. The findings demonstrate that the film functions as more than an entertainment product; it serves as a digital medium for transmitting the Madurese language, social values, customs, and collective cultural identity. The integration of the Madurese language with culturally embedded narratives enables audiences to recognize, appreciate, and reinterpret local traditions within a contemporary digital environment. Audience responses further reveal dominant, negotiated, and oppositional readings, indicating varying levels of cultural interpretation while maintaining the film's significance as a vehicle for cultural engagement. Moreover, YouTube facilitates wider accessibility and intergenerational dissemination, enhancing the visibility of regional culture beyond its geographical origin. The study concludes that regional-language short films constitute an effective strategy for strengthening cultural awareness and supporting the sustainability of local cultural heritage in the digital era. These findings contribute to broader discussions on digital media, regional-language revitalization, and community-based cultural preservation.

Abstract

Learning basic dance movements is an important foundation for mastering dance skill, since it shapes movement technique, rhythmic sensitivity, and expressive appreciation. Sanggar Brang Wetan Surabaya applies the drill and practice method in teaching basic dance movements to help students master these skills through repeated, structured, and continuous exercise. This study aims to describe the implementation of the drill and practice method in learning basic dance movements and to describe the resulting learning outcomes of basic dance movement skills among students at Sanggar Brang Wetan Surabaya. The study draws on Hamalik's concept of the drill method, the behaviourist theories of Ivan Pavlov and John B. Watson, Benjamin S. Bloom's taxonomy of learning outcomes, and Anders Ericsson's concept of deliberate practice. A qualitative descriptive approach was used, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the studio leader, two coaches, and student participants from the children's class, and analysed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, validated through method, source, and time triangulation. The results show that basic dance movement learning using the drill and practice method was implemented systematically through six stages: warming up, movement demonstration, movement imitation, repeated practice, correction, and movement refinement, delivered in a graded manner according to students' age and ability level. Learning outcomes show that students were able to master the wiraga, wirama, and wirasa aspects of dance well. Beyond technical mastery, basic movement learning also contributed to students' discipline, self-confidence, and readiness for the annual level-advancement examination. It is concluded that the drill and practice method is effective for teaching basic dance movement at Sanggar Brang Wetan Surabaya, as it helps students develop dance movement skills gradually, in a structured and sustainable manner that supports mastery of wiraga, wirama, and wirasa.

Abstract

Local dance can function not only as a form of cultural expression but also as a pedagogical medium for character formation. Nevertheless, empirical studies examining how locally created choreography represents and transmits educational values within formal arts education remain limited. This study examines the educational values embedded in Sayuk Dance, created by Renny Nurwitadiarti, and analyzes its integration into Arts and Culture learning at an Indonesian junior high school. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, with data collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with the choreographer who also served as the Arts and Culture teacher and seventh-grade students, and analysis of instructional and performance documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Research credibility was established through source, technique, and time triangulation. The findings identified five interrelated educational values: tolerance, mutual cooperation, discipline, teamwork, and environmental care. These values were represented through synchronized group movements, floor patterns, costumes, musical accompaniment, and the symbolic use of bamboo-basket waste bins and coconut-leaf brooms. Sayuk Dance was integrated into learning through dance appreciation, simplified movement practice, collaborative rehearsals, reflection, and performance within the Pancasila Student Profile Strengthening Project focusing on local wisdom. Observational and interview evidence indicated that participation in these activities strengthened students’ cooperation, responsibility, discipline, environmental awareness, and respect for differences. The findings demonstrate that locally created choreography can provide contextual learning material that connects artistic competence with character education and environmental values. This study further highlights the pedagogical role of school-based dance creation in maintaining local cultural knowledge and supporting culturally grounded arts education.
