Abstract

Improvisation is a central device that sustains the flexibility, social proximity, and vitality of ludruk performance. Yet the local practice known as spel is commonly reduced to a technical pre-performance meeting, leaving its artistic and pedagogical mechanisms insufficiently conceptualized. This study identifies the distinctive features of spel and develops a conceptual model of improvisation in East Javanese ludruk. An exploratory qualitative approach combines literature review, performance observation, structured and unstructured interviews with ludruk practitioners, document analysis, and source-method triangulation. Findings at the progress-report stage indicate that spel functions as a coordination system connecting narrative maps, scene nodes, bodily and vocal cues, inter-performer rhythm, audience-response reading, and ethical boundaries of humour. Ludruk improvisation is therefore not unstructured spontaneity but real-time co-creation supported by experience, ensemble trust, and cultural knowledge. The article proposes a five-stage spel cycle and contributes to improvisation studies, traditional actor pedagogy, and the regeneration of ludruk. Abstract

Topeng Sidhakarya is a UNESCO-recognized sacred Balinese mask dance taught at Pasraman Saraswati 1 Surabaya, a Hindu religious school with only three hours of weekly instruction. Conventional, one-way teaching leaves the 49 junior high level students with surface-level understanding of the dance's philosophy and symbolism. This research and development (R&D) study, using a mixed-methods approach and the ADDIE model, produced an interactive e-book accompanied by short knowledge videos covering the dance's history, meaning, function, dancer criteria, and purification ritual. The product was validated by a material expert, a media expert, and a language expert, then trialed with 10 students using a pretest-posttest design. Validation results showed the media was categorized as very feasible (material 93.00%, media 81.61%, language 96.36%, student response 90.00%). The N-Gain score reached 0.88, indicating a high level of effectiveness in improving students' understanding of the ritual dance. These findings suggest that interactive, multimedia-based e-books can meaningfully support cultural-religious arts education under limited contact-time conditions. Abstract

Traditional dance extracurricular programs play a strategic role in cultivating both technical dance skills and character values among students, particularly in vocational secondary schools where such programs often serve as a bridge between formal education and community-based cultural preservation. This study examines the implementation of imitation and drill methods in the learning of the Wanci Kahuripan dance within the Sekar Arum dance extracurricular program at SMKN 1 Jetis Mojokerto. The research employed a qualitative descriptive case study approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews with the extracurricular instructor, direct observation of training sessions, and documentation of student performances. The findings show that the imitation method facilitates students' initial recognition and comprehension of movement, while the drill method strengthens precision, tempo accuracy, and physical coordination through repeated practice. Continuous evaluation, combined with a personalized approach to each student, contributed to a learning atmosphere in which technical competence (wiraga) developed alongside emotional and moral internalization (wirasa) of the values embodied in the story of Mbah Semi, the legendary figure represented in the dance. The results were further evidenced by students' increasing self-confidence and their active participation in performances outside the school environment, including a regional Independence Day commemoration and a cultural exhibition opening. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on traditional dance pedagogy by demonstrating how the complementary application of behaviorist-oriented teaching methods can simultaneously support technical mastery and character education in extracurricular settings.

Abstract

Extracurricular learning serves as an important medium for developing students' potential beyond formal classroom instruction. In dance education, extracurricular activities are designed not only to improve students' technical dance skills but also to foster creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, responsibility, and self-confidence. One instructional model considered effective in achieving these objectives is Project-Based Learning (PjBL), which emphasizes student-centered learning through the completion of meaningful projects that produce authentic products. This study aims to describe the implementation of the Project-Based Learning model in dance extracurricular activities at SMP PGRI 1 Buduran Sidoarjo and to examine its contribution to students' achievements. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving the principal, extracurricular coordinator, dance instructor, and participating students. Data analysis consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while source and technique triangulation were employed to ensure data validity. The findings reveal that Project-Based Learning was implemented through six systematic stages: project identification, project planning, scheduling, project implementation under teacher supervision, presentation of project outcomes, and evaluation of both learning processes and products. This approach produced several dance performances, including the creation of Tari Prasung Suran for the National Student Arts Festival and Competition (FLS3N). Furthermore, the implementation of PjBL enhanced students' cognitive, affective, and psychomotor competencies, as reflected in improved theoretical understanding, dance performance skills, teamwork, discipline, and confidence during performances and competitions.
