The mission of the International Journal of Literature and Language Studies (IJLLS) is to provide readers with the development of language studies in linguistics and literature. In addition to manuscripts that center on the study, we welcome manuscripts on a wide range of topics relating to the technology used for language development, cultural impact on languages, computational linguistics, and philosophy of language. IJLLS publishes scholarly conceptual, theoretical, and empirical manuscripts on the study of language and focused on literature and linguistic analysis and development. Submissions to the journal should be readable and understandable by a wide audience. Manuscripts should therefore also focus on analysis or illustration of the issues covered, rather than merely providing a mathematical or technical coverage, which would be more suitable for a specialist journal. All manuscripts are submitted and reviewed electronically. We provide our published authors with both a quality publication and the widespread readership that comes from publishing all manuscripts online within a few weeks of acceptance. This approach ensures that published works are read and cited by the widest possible audience.

Abstract

This article addresses the development of a comprehensive methodology for optimizing the spatial placement of civil defense protective structures, improving the efficiency of their utilization, and assessing the level of population protection from emergencies through the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies. The proposed methodology integrates spatial data on population density and distribution, existing protective structures and their capacities, accessibility and evacuation routes, potentially hazardous facilities, infrastructure networks, and emergency risk zones within a unified geospatial environment. GIS-based spatial analysis, network analysis, multi-criteria assessment, and spatial optimization methods are proposed to identify areas with insufficient protective coverage and determine priority locations for new or additional protective structures. Particular attention is given to assessing the accessibility, capacity, technical condition, and operational readiness of existing facilities, as well as their correspondence with the spatial distribution of the population. A comprehensive population protection index is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the level of civil defense coverage across different territorial units. The developed methodological approach can support evidence-based decision-making in civil defense planning, urban development, emergency preparedness, and the modernization of protective infrastructure, ultimately contributing to increased population safety and territorial resilience during emergencies.

Abstract

This article examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on the English language learning process among students learning English as a foreign language (EFL). The aim of the study is to determine the extent to which AI-based tools influence students' motivation, writing, speaking, and vocabulary skills. A mixed-method approach was employed: 120 EFL students participated in a survey, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 students and 5 teachers. The results revealed that students who regularly used AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Duolingo) showed significant improvement in writing skills and vocabulary range, while the effect on speaking and critical-thinking skills was comparatively weaker. The study also identified a risk of students becoming overly dependent on AI tools. The article concludes with recommendations for the balanced and pedagogically sound integration of AI tools into the educational process.

Abstract

English lullabies have long served as a vital medium for the transmission of cultural values and linguistic patterns from one generation to the next. This study investigates the linguocultural aspects of English lullabies by analyzing their language features, musical structures, and embedded cultural narratives. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis approach, a corpus of traditional and contemporary English lullabies was examined alongside a review of seven key scholarly papers in the fields of linguistics, ethnomusicology, and cultural studies. The analysis reveals that English lullabies commonly employ repetitive phonetic patterns, soothing melodic contours, and culturally laden metaphors to create an atmosphere of comfort and security. These linguistic devices not only aid in soothing infants but also function as subtle vehicles for cultural identity and socialization. The study discusses how these features reflect historical and regional variations within the English-speaking world, thus highlighting the dynamic interplay between language, music, and culture. The implications of these findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how lullabies serve both linguistic and cultural functions, offering insights for educators, linguists, and cultural historians alike.

Abstract

In this research work, the issues of forming passenger flows in the passenger transport system of Tashkent city were studied based on experimental methods. The study was conducted on the example of the «Furniture Store – Alay Bazaar» transport corridor, where a passenger turnover of 112,025 people was recorded at 23 stops during 15 hours of observations. The hourly distribution of passenger flows, gender composition, the share of mobility-impaired population groups and trip duration by modes of transport were analysed. Load cartograms were compiled using GIS technologies. Proposals for planning dedicated bus lanes (DBL) taking into account the category of the street and road network were developed. The possibility of increasing travel speed from 21 to 28 km/h, increasing the number of passengers by 30 % and improving system efficiency by 20 % was substantiated.

Abstract

Literary analysis has evolved from traditional text-centered criticism to interdisciplinary approaches incorporating linguistics, cognitive science, cultural studies, and discourse analysis. Contemporary analytical frameworks allow researchers to investigate literary texts from multiple perspectives, revealing how language constructs ideology, identity, and social reality. This article examines the principal analytical frameworks employed in literary studies and demonstrates their application to Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South (1855) and Charles Dickens's Hard Times (1854). Drawing upon cognitive poetics, linguocultural analysis, stylistics, discourse analysis, conceptual metaphor theory, and narratology, the paper illustrates how Victorian realist fiction reflects industrialization, class conflict, gender relations, and regional identity through linguistic choices. The study argues that combining multiple analytical frameworks produces a more comprehensive understanding of realist literature than relying upon a single methodological approach. The findings contribute to linguocultural literary studies by demonstrating that Victorian novels encode complex cultural concepts through lexical, stylistic, and cognitive structures.

Abstract

This study investigates the conceptualization of culturally salient meanings through colour-component zoonymic idioms in English and Uzbek from a comparative linguocultural perspective. It focuses on the interaction between colour symbolism and animal imagery in the phraseological representation of human character, emotional states, social relations, rarity, conflict, deception, and culturally significant values. The analysis is based on English and Uzbek phraseological units in which colour and zoonymic components contribute to the formation of figurative meaning. Particular attention is given to such cross-linguistically relevant units as black swan – oq qarg‘a, sariq ilonning yog‘ini yalagan – a snake in the grass, like a red rag to a bull – jahl otiga minmoq, as well as culturally specific expressions including white elephant, seeing pink elephants, white dove / oq kabutar, and the Turkic symbolic images oq bo‘ri and ko‘k bo‘ri. The study employs descriptive, componential-semantic, comparative, conceptual, and linguocultural methods to identify the semantic motivation of colour components, the symbolic functions of animal images, and the cultural mechanisms underlying idiom formation. The findings indicate that comparable concepts may be verbalized through substantially different colour-animal configurations in the two languages. While certain units demonstrate functional-semantic correspondence, others reveal partial or complete idiomatic lacunarity. The analysis further shows that the symbolic interpretation of colour and animal components is conditioned by historical experience, traditional lifestyle, mythology, religious beliefs, and culturally established value systems. The study concludes that universality in colour-component zoonymic idioms is primarily manifested at the conceptual-semantic level, whereas national specificity emerges through figurative imagery, symbolic motivation, and culturally conventionalized models of conceptualization.

Abstract

This article analyzes the phenomenon of gapping as a distinct type of ellipsis within the framework of the actual division of the sentence (theme–rheme structure). Gapping is the omission of a repeated verb in the subsequent conjunct of a coordinate construction, while the remaining arguments are retained (e.g., John bought an apple, while Mary — an orange). The article examines the interaction between gapping and word order in English and Russian. The main conclusion of the study is that gapping is not purely a syntactic phenomenon but is determined by information structure: the omitted verb is recovered from the context, while the remaining elements, functioning as contrastive foci, occupy the rheme position. In English, gapping requires strict parallelism between the two conjuncts, whereas in Russian, due to its relatively free word order, it provides greater flexibility in expressing contrastive focus.

Abstract

Speaking fluency is a fundamental component of effective oral communication in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. However, many EFL learners experience difficulties in maintaining continuous speech, responding spontaneously, and participating actively in classroom interaction. One possible explanation is the limited amount of meaningful oral practice available in teacher-centred classrooms. Collaborative learning provides an alternative instructional framework in which learners interact with peers, exchange information, negotiate meaning, provide mutual support, and participate in shared communicative tasks. This article examines the potential of collaborative learning for developing EFL learners’ speaking fluency through a qualitative synthesis of relevant theoretical and empirical research. Particular attention is paid to peer interaction, opportunities for language production, negotiation of meaning, peer scaffolding, feedback, learner participation, and task design. The reviewed literature indicates that appropriately structured cooperative and collaborative activities can contribute to improvements in oral proficiency and speaking fluency. At the same time, the effectiveness of collaborative learning depends on factors such as task structure, individual accountability, participation patterns, proficiency differences, and teacher guidance. The article argues that collaborative learning should not be understood simply as placing learners into groups; rather, it should be implemented through purposeful communicative tasks that create sustained opportunities for meaningful oral interaction.
