Abstract

Language styles are present in different social groups in the communication process, and this language phenomenon necessitates attention to ensure effective communication. The objective of this research is to investigate the ways in which different language styles are produced, as well as the extent to which social factors and dimensions drive the use of certain languages. This research utilizes qualitative methods, with participant observation serving as the primary data collection technique. The data are the utterances of the participants (students and lecturers) of the English for Journalism class. The findings of this study demonstrate the existence of at least four styles that are alternately employed in this class, namely formal, intimate, consultative, and casual. Various societal factors also tend to play an active role in the selection of a particular language style, namely setting, participants, situation and topic, social-solidarity distance, status, formality, and referential and affective function scale. These findings underscore the adaptability of language choice in the classroom, which is flexible and adapts to the interaction of social factors and classroom context.

Abstract

The study of regional languages holds significant importance as an indicator of cultural identity, a source of communal pride, and a means of preserving the Indonesian language. Among these, the Bugis language, predominantly spoken by communities in several districts of South Sulawesi, serves as a notable example. This paper examines the phenomenon of homonymy in the Bugis language. The primary objective of this research is to analyze the relationships and forms of homonymy present in the language. A qualitative descriptive methodology has been employed, with data collected through oral accounts provided by key informants who are native speakers and possess advanced proficiency in Bugis. The findings indicate that specific terms in the Bugis language exhibit similar semantic properties.

Abstract

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has led to its widespread adoption in education, particularly in essay writing. AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT and Grammarly may assist students in various aspects of writing, including grammar correction, idea generation, and content refinement. This study explores students' perceptions of AI's role in essay writing, its benefits, and potential challenges related to academic integrity, creativity, and time management. Using a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five students enrolled in an essay writing class. Thematic analysis of the data revealed that students generally perceive AI as a beneficial tool that enhances writing efficiency, provides instant feedback, and improves the technical aspects of writing. However, some participants expressed concerns about losing their personal writing style and becoming overly reliant on AI, which may hinder creativity and independent thinking. Additionally, issues related to academic integrity emerged, with students questioning whether AI-generated assistance could be considered plagiarism. Additionally, AI's impact on students' time management differed, as some experienced greater productivity, while others acknowledged increased procrastination due to AI's capacity to accelerate tasks. The findings suggest that while AI offers significant advantages, it should be used responsibly as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for independent writing skills. Educational institutions should establish clear guidelines to promote ethical AI usage and encourage students to balance AI assistance with personal effort to develop critical thinking and originality in writing. The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has led to its widespread adoption in education, particularly in essay writing. Abstract

The study of dysphemism remains significant because it is frequently observed in daily interactions as a way to express strong emotions such as anger, frustration, or dislike, both on direct conversations, and digital platforms. This study examines the types and effects of dysphemism in YouTube comments in the video “Two Steps Ahead” by Avocado Nicokado. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, the research identifies dysphemisms based on Allan and Burridge’s (2006) framework. To collect the data, the researcher accessed the Nikocado Avocado YouTube channel and selected the video “Two Step Ahead,” which had 49 million views and 304,726 comments. The 25 comments were analyzed as data, with relevant ones captured using screenshots and notes, and the identified dysphemistic terms were cross-checked for accuracy. Based on 25 analyzed comments, 31 dysphemistic words and phrases were identified. The data revealed the following types of dysphemism: 9 are categorized as taboo terms, 4 as profane swearing and oaths, 1 as comparisons with animals, 1 as dysphemistic epithets, 7 as imprecations and epithets, 1 as -IST dysphemism, and 8 as terms of insult. Based on the data, taboo words and phrases were the most frequent, followed by insult terms and imprecations and epithets, mostly used to insult and mock Nikocado, though some expressed shock and admiration. Dysphemism can affect people's perspectives. It also provides emotional release, affecting how individuals express frustration or surprise. While generally negative, dysphemism can create closeness in informal contexts but may also deepen polarization and reinforce existing biases.

Abstract

Class struggle emerges due to the gap between two conflicting classes: the bourgeoisie (capital owners) and the proletariat (workers). The oppression and unjust distribution of rights lead the working class to fight for equality. This condition has been immortalized in poetry by poets as a reflection of social realities. This research aims to examine the application of Marxist theory in literature by analyzing class struggle in Ralph Hosea Chaplin’s poems, "The Commonwealth of Toil," "Sabotage," and "Solidarity Forever" (1917). The study employs a qualitative descriptive method using Marxist theory to analyze the representation of power relations and the struggle of the exploited class. The findings reveal that power is in the hands of the bourgeoisie, who exploit and oppress the proletariat without granting their rights. Moreover, the proletariat responds with resistance, starting from ideological awareness to verbal and physical confrontation against the bourgeoisie.

Abstract

This study examines the genre-based discourse of Christmas invitation letters within the Simalungun Christian Church (GKPS) in Indonesia. Using Swales' (1990) genre move analysis and the multimodal approach of Kress and Van Leeuwen (1996), the study identifies six key moves present in the structure of the invitations: opening, congratulating the recipient, stating the purpose and message, providing event details, making formal requests, and concluding with official signatures. These moves highlight how the invitations not only communicate event information but also reflect Christian religious values and Indonesian cultural norms. The analysis underscores the importance of language and visual elements in conveying social and religious unity within the community. This research contributes to a broader understanding of how genre functions within religious and cultural contexts

Abstract

This study examines the symbolism of the hairball in Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn through a Marxist lens, revealing its significance as a reflection of class struggle and power dynamics. The analysis is done qualitatively and it demonstrates how the hairball embodies materialism, exemplifies false consciousness, and reinforces the imbalance of power between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat in the novel. By requiring payment for its fortune-telling services, the hairball highlights the pervasiveness of capitalist values. Furthermore, the study connects the hairball's symbolism to contemporary issues which highlight the novel's enduring relevance in understanding economic inequality and exploitation. This analysis shows that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn serves as a critique of the social world and reflects situations that continue to be relevant today.

Abstract

The strategic use of emotive language in journalistic headlines serves to capture reader attention and evoke emotional responses. This study examines the application of emotive language in headlines related to Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 (MH370) through a comparative analysis of New Straits Times and The Washington Post. Using Martin and White's (2005) appraisal theory, the research investigates attitude systems (affect, judgement, and appreciation) and graduation systems (sharp and soft tones) in headline construction. The study adopts a qualitative approach, analyzing 10 headlines from each publication through content analysis, with headlines selected via homogeneous purposive sampling. The findings reveal that cultural context significantly influences the deployment of emotive language, with news outlets strategically leveraging social contexts to elicit specific emotional responses from their target audiences. This relationship between cultural background and emotional interpretation underscores both the power and potential risks of emotive language in headline construction. While effective use of emotive language can enhance reader engagement, its misuse may lead to sensationalism and misinterpretation of news content. These insights provide valuable guidance for researchers, journalists, and academicians in crafting effective and ethically sound headlines.
