Abstract

Listening skill has been an under-emphasised skill in many English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms until recent decades. To keep up with the global advancement of technology, many studies on listening skills have integrated use of technology. In Malaysia, listening skills are also often neglected due to the highly examination-oriented education system. Since communication and technology competence are important 21st century skills, learners should be exposed to listening skills using no less than multimedia, especially when technology is inaccessible in rural parts of the country. This paper aims to examine the perceptions of teachers and pupils in using audio clips to develop listening comprehension skills in a rural primary school in Sarawak, East Malaysia, where digital facilities and internet connection are lacking in many parts of the state. Focus group interviews were conducted with two teachers and three ESL pupils after six weekly listening activities using audio clips based on the textbooks. Findings indicated that the teachers found audio clips to be useful and convenient, while pupils exhibited more interest and concentration during lessons. All respondents believed that audio clips could encourage the development of listening comprehension skills. Finally, it is recommended that audio clips could be expanded into a listening module that slowly moves towards authentic listening to equip learners with real-world skills and experiences.

Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to identify the dominant Big Five Personality among pre service teachers in the Malaysian Teacher Education Institutes (IPGMs). The rationales of this study could be seen from three different aspects, which are the situational, literature and the Malaysian contexts. It is clear from current practice and the literatures that further research is needed to delve deeper into the understanding of personalities from the perspective of Big Five, especially among Malaysian pre service teachers. The data for this study was collected by survey using Neo FFI 3, which assessed the neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness of individuals. The samples consisted of 751 pre-services teachers selected through stratified and cluster sampling from the 27 IPGMs in Malaysia. Samples from the pre-service teacherscompleted the survey after their 12 weeks practicum in schools, as these 12 weeks practicum could be considered as the most stressful and crucial period of the pre service teachers training life in the IPGMs. Results revealed that majority of the pre-service teachers were conscientious. This interesting finding might have some positive indications to educations in Malaysia as it was in accordance with the MOE’s objectives.

The data for this study was collected through observation, the result of worksheets’ scores and the result of the pre-test and post-test. The results of the findings from three different sources showed that the use of ‘Make It Plural’ (M.I.P) Chart has significantly improved the participants’ ability to spell the countable plural forms of the nouns correctly. Discussion of the findings, reflection and suggestion for further research was highlighted in the last section of this article in order to develop more quality and comprehensive teaching and learning session in the future.

Abstract

The Malaysian government is concerned about the significance of studying abroad and has therefore been very active in sending students abroad to study. Malaysia has an elaborate foreign scholarship program which sees 10,000 or more students relocate abroad annually and the majority of them are Malays or Bumiputera. Studying abroad is seen as a backbone to produce a potential citizen that functions effectively in society and plays a role in economic and national development. This paper provides an analysis of Malay undergraduate students’ narratives of their perceptions and attitudes towards studying abroad and the UK’s education system. The purpose of this paper is to investigate, share and understand their process of adjustment and adaptation as well as the challenges they encounter while abroad. The findings support the previous literature that studying abroad has a significant impact on the students’ life experience. The problems students encountered as being of three general types: socio-cultural adjustments; language issues; and learning and teaching approach. It is argued here that these experiences and problems, along with other aspects of their previous education system, interaction with the locals/ host national, religion, culture and language, had an influence on their attitudes towards study in the UK.

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the reading behaviour of primary ESL (English as a Second Language) learners in SJKC Chung Hua Semera Sarawak through the perspective of their teachers in the ESL classroom. To acquire this, interviews were carried out with the teachers to collect qualitative data. A total of 3 ESL teachers were selected from the school to participate in this study. The analysis of the data reveals that majority of the ESL learners spent most of their time reading by skimming and scanning, identifying keywords, applying one-time reading, non-linear reading, and reading selectively. On the contrary, the ESL learners spent less time reading expansively and comprehensively. Since the English language is the learners’ second or third language, they lack confidence and motivation as they face various hindrances in fully understanding and interpreting information in this language. The findings of this study intend to provide a springboard for further researches on the approaches to enhance ESL reading skills. Instructional implications are also discussed.

Abstract

English is becoming more important in this globalized world. In Malaysia, calls have been made from rulers and commoners alike to use English as the primary medium of instruction in primary schools. Although Malaysia has centralized education system for every state, rural schools might be in danger of losing out to their counterparts in the urban areas. Numerous programmes have been done to bring the standard of English in the school up to par with their counterparts from urban schools and yet English remains a tricky subject to master. In a rural school in the district of Song, Sarawak, English has always been the lowest performing subjects in UPSR year after year. Parallel to UPSR, the pupils for English intervention programme (LINUS BI) has the most compared to Bahasa Malaysia (BM) and Mathematics. This paper will attempt to research and understand the primary issues contributing to low performance of English in the school. At the same time, this paper will attempt to compare the background of pupils with high performance of English and pupils with low and mediocre performance in English and the causes leading to what they are today.
