Abstract

Education cannot be separated from culture. It is possible to provide learning and be tolerant of other cultures. Multicultural education offers diverse cultures, ethnicity, and religion. The study aims to explore students' views of multicultural education in learning at an Indonesian Islamic higher education. It employs a descriptive study by applying a quantitative approach. By considering the ethnic and study program, respondents in this study were determined through the purposive sampling technique by involving 25 students from the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training UINSI Samarinda, each representing five different study programs in the faculty. They enrolled as Ma’had Al-Jami’ah students obligated to study English in their initial semester. They were chosen from various study programs because they came from different ethnic backgrounds. This study collects data with a questionnaire instrument distributed online through a Google Forms. Descriptive statistics were used to tabulate and present the quantitative data collected from the questionnaire. The findings in this study provide an overview of the different perspectives of students at Islamic higher education on multicultural education in their learning. This study groups students' views of multicultural education in learning at Islamic higher education into three categories, (1) Highly Supportive on Multicultural Education, (2) Moderately Supportive on Multicultural Education, and (3) Lowly Supportive on Multicultural Education. Most of them have understood the values of multicultural education and are very supportive of its implementation in every lecture and campus policy but there are still students who do not understand the values of this multicultural education. Continuous studies are necessary to support the application of this multicultural education from time to time according to the needs of each institution.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine whether spirituality, religiosity, and competence can predict teacher performance. To prove this, a study was conducted on 90 Madrasah teachers in Samarinda as the sample in this study. The research sample was selected randomly, the number of which was determined based on the Slovin formula with a precision level of 0.10 (N=867). To obtain empirical data, researchers used a questionnaire on spirituality, religiosity, competence, and teacher performance. The research data were analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression with the SPSS V26 program. The analysis results showed a significant level of p <0.05 with a relationship strength of 0.843, which means that there is a significant relationship between spirituality, religiosity, and competence with teacher performance. Simultaneously, the contribution of the three independent variables to teacher performance was 53.8%, while partially, each independent variable contributed 50.8% (spirituality), 24% (religiosity), and 59.8% (competence). The implication is that these findings prove that one cannot rely solely on competency factors to get good performance from teachers. Although competence has the highest contribution, it also takes a religiosity factor that will give direction to individuals in their work, namely worshipping Allah SWT, and spiritual factors that provide meaning and prosperity in life. Thus, it can be concluded that the level of teacher performance can be predicted through the teacher's spirituality, religiosity, and competence.

Abstract

This research was carried out to determine the perceptions of schools of students studying in five European Union countries (Spain, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania) and the candidate country Turkey. In the study, the data were obtained through the student opinion form created by the researchers and analyzed by content analysis. In the study, it was determined that most of the students had a positive perception towards the school and described the school with positive concepts, metaphors, emotions, and values. Students with a positive perception of school have described school with the concepts of learning, friendship, future, development, entertainment, life, responsibility; positive emotions such as success, happiness, trust, pleasure, interest, love, joy, and respect; value expressions such as helpfulness, friendship, empathy; and with the house, family, home metaphors. It has also been understood that some of the students (13%) have a negative perception of school, they do not like school, and they continue to school because it is compulsory. It was among the findings of the research that the students with a negative perception of school have described school by metaphors expressing physical and emotional discomfort such as boredom, suffering, headache, burnout; and metaphors emphasizing the restriction of freedom such as prison, captivity, and watch tower. In addition, it has been determined that students with negative perceptions have individual and organizational reasons for these perceptions. In the research, it was concluded that there are common meanings in students’ perceptions of school in different countries towards the school, and no matter what language they speak, the students describe the school with similar thoughts and feelings. In this direction, suggestions have been made to increase the awareness of executives and policymakers about students' perceptions of school, to consider the interests and needs of students in the physical design of schools, to implement support programs that will enable students to develop a positive perception of the school, and to conduct longitudinal studies examining the reasons for these perceptions of students with negative perceptions.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the factors that contribute to the success of empowering Muslim communities in West Java Province's poorest neighborhoods through religious education, halal food security, and socio-religious resilience. Quantitative research techniques, specifically survey research, are employed here. A questionnaire was used to collect information from 185 people who were selected at random using a proportional sampling formula. Smart-PLS 3.0 was used to perform the statistical analysis. The study's findings suggest that the effectiveness of government and private-sector efforts to empower Muslim communities is impacted by the level of religious education given to the Muslim community, both in terms of broad-brush religious education and more specialized forms of education. A well-planned halal food security program has a higher chance of successfully empowering Muslims. A Muslim community's ability to empower itself is heavily influenced by the degree to which its members feel socially and religiously safe. Muslim community empowerment programs are carried out by the government, private institutions (NGOs and companies), and campuses; they are significantly influenced by religious education and life skills education, halal food security, and social-religion security.

Abstract

The quality of life sustained by human beings is largely possible thanks to the opportunities offered by the biodiversity resources in nature. It is widely accepted that the continuation of this lifestyle largely depends on the sustainable use of consumed and destroyed natural resources. Therefore, teaching biodiversity becomes an important element of science teaching. In this context, it is important to reveal the biodiversity literacy levels of the new generation. This study aims to investigate secondary school students’ biodiversity literacy levels. The descriptive survey method, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the research. A total of 787 secondary school students studying at state schools during 2021-2022 academic year participated in the research. “Biodiversity Literacy Assessment Instrument” was used as a data collection tool in the study. Independent t-test was used to compare gender scores while one-way ANOVA was used to compare student scores based on their grades, students’ feelings about studying biodiversity, and understanding problems related to biodiversity. Tukey HSD test was used to determine the direction of significance in multiple comparisons. The findings revealed that while secondary school students’ scores for attitudes toward biodiversity were high, their biodiversity knowledge levels were low. Also, female students gained higher scores for “the conservation and importance of biodiversity”, “ethics and biodiversity” and “sustainability and biodiversity” sub-dimensions of biodiversity literacy scale in comparison to male students. Additionally, the study found that participant students’ biodiversity literacy scale scores differed based on students’ years of study. The study has implications for teaching biodiversity that include activities to help students take responsibility for the protection of biodiversity and the place of biodiversity in the national curriculum.
