This article contains a study of Sunan Gunung Djati regarding his preaching (dakwah) in Cirebon where the people are multicultural. Through historical research methodology which is divided into three basic heuristic processes, interpretation and historiography, this paper aims to present descriptive-analytic writing through the contextualization of historical (past) and present values. The focus of this paper discusses the path of preaching Sunan Gunung Djati in Cirebon which in its history has built an ethno-religious society as an effort to harmonize religious and cultural values that are in line with the values of moderation. This study is a response to the conflicts that occur due to ethnic, racial, religious and intergroup sentiments which are a challenge for multicultural Indonesian society. The results of this study show that Sunan Gunung Djati played a major role as a religious and government leader in building the stability of his country and religion. There are at least three efforts that can be taken as steps to internalize the values of moderation in Indonesia, namely regulation-based efforts, education-based efforts and socialization-based efforts.

In this modern era appeared the modern thinker of Muslims who are trying to respond to the development of modern science with different points of view such as Zia Eddin Sardar, Seyyed Hossein Nasr and others. One such modern Muslim thinker is Nidal Guessoum. Through his book Islam's Quantum Question: Reconciling Muslim Tradition and Modern Science, the author attempted to reconcile Islam and science, which have been in conflict with each other in terms of the truth of knowledge since time immemorial. Islam believes that the source of reality of knowledge is the text (the Qur’an and Hadith), and science believes that the source of reality of knowledge is the mind. Through this launch, Nidal researched in-depth and integrative research on the position of Islam in looking at science, and most of his research revolves around natural sciences such as physics, development theory, global principles (Antropik Principle, Philosophy of Modern Science) and other natural sciences. With his accurate and profound background in the beauty of physical science and astronomy, Nidal presented some philosophical questions about the universality of the modern world, either from the perspective of philosophy or from the perspective of applied sciences.

This article discussed tajwid Naẓam Taḥsīnah by KH. Ahmad Rifa'i, one of the oldest recitation books in the archipelago, in addition to the position of KH. Ahmad Rifa'i is a scholar who pioneered the use of the pegon script in his writing on the one hand and as a colonial resistance movement on the other. This study used a socio-historical approach to see the context and explore the thoughts of KH. Ahmad Rifa'i in the book Naẓam Taḥsīnah and the context that surrounds it in the background of Dutch colonialism in the 19th century AD. Several stages are passed in the form of inventorying data, selecting and classifying it, then reconstructing and conducting a critical analysis of the basic assumptions. The results of these findings are; First, the background of Dutch colonialism which took place in the 19th century AD directly shaped the thinking of KH. Ahmad Rifa'i when writing Naẓam Taḥsīnah to carry out non-physical resistance with anti-colonial narratives inserted in his book. Second, the Naẓam Taḥsīnah has its own characteristics in composing the discussion of tajwid science, that using naẓam in Javanese pegon and containing anti-colonial narratives which conveyed through terms, such as pious scholars, pious scholars, infidels, and hypocrites. Those terms were aimed at the attitude of Dutch anti-colonialism as well as a form of non-physical resistance and secretive, but able to embrace students and the community.

Indonesia is a country with a majority of its population practicing Islam, but it does not claim itself as an Islamic state. The presence of Pancasila as a melting pot has led to the emergence of a highly elegant Civil Society in this nation. Islam and Pancasila, in principle, are aligned and harmonious within the context of Indonesian democracy. The purpose of this research focuses on the harmonization of Islam and Pancasila in the study of religious moderation in Indonesia. The study employs a qualitative approach through a literature review and field studies involving observations and documentation. The research findings explain that religion and Pancasila are in alignment, with religion serving as a way of life for its followers, while Pancasila represents the way of life for the religiously diverse Indonesian nation. In the literature on religious moderation in Indonesia, religion must provide enlightenment to its adherents so that they can accept and appreciate the noble values of Pancasila. Conversely, the existence of Pancasila must also protect all religious communities, including those who do not adhere to any religion or hold different beliefs. This is why the actualization of religious moderation in society has become a distinctive characteristic of Indonesia, both socially and religiously.

This article examines the phenomenon of ‘ain being read ngain by ngapak children when reading the Qur'an. This article focuses on the Qur'an Education Park (Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an [TPQ]) Ayah village, Kebumen. The problem formulation of this article is how reading ngain as a representation of 'ain in reading the Qur'an among the ngapak children at TPQ At-Taqwa? This article is field research, so the primary data comes from interviews, observations, and documentation at TPQ At-Taqwa. This article uses a descriptive-analytical method with a qualitative approach and applies the theory of Qur'an reception by Ahmad Rafiq, especially functional reception. This article concludes that the pronunciation of ngain in reading the Qur'an among ngapak children in TPQ At-Taqwa Ayah village, Kebumen, is a phenomenon of the interaction of local ngapak Muslims towards the Qur'an which functions to get closer to the Quran. TPQ responds in a dynamic-contextual-based negotiation, which is not rigid and is according to social conditions. At first, the teachers tried to improve the pronunciation of ngain to become 'ain, but then ngain was accepted as a representation of 'ain with a function so that the children in the village could continue to be enthusiastic about reading the Qur'an. The findings of this study offer a humanist approach to the Qur’an by Muslim readings that are different from others so that they do not discriminate and can be tolerant, inclusive, and friendly towards the diversity that exists

Abstract: Claims related to the existence of a relationship between terrorist networks and Islamic boarding schools have been refuted through various previous studies. Some of the logical reasons put forward in previous research are the need to distinguish between the personal perpetrators of terrorism and the pesantren institution itself, besides that there are not a few studies that show the contribution of pesantren in the development and dissemination of Islamic understanding that is rahmatal lil alamin. This study aims to look at the strategy of the Al-Muayyad Islamic boarding school in Solo in spreading moderate understanding among students and the general public. This study uses qualitative research methods with data collection techniques using interviews, observation and documentation studies. The results showed that the Al-Muayyad Islamic Boarding School in Solo developed based on the thought of the kyai, namely that pesantren should not be an ivory tower in society, but integrated into the community. The strategy for spreading the notion of moderation is in the form of introducing, which is then contained in the form of activities in the form of building interfaith cooperation, using a humanist approach instead of a dogmatic-theological approach in addressing differences, and the establishment of interfaith pesantren. This paper examines the meaning of symbols contained in the Ngupati tradition through the recitation of the Qur'an in Pamijahan Village, Cirebon. Symbols in a tradition are studied through the theory of symbolic interactionism. The method in this research is qualitative by collecting data through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the study show that ngupati is a four-month tradition of pregnancy with the aim of safety for the prospective baby. The symbol of safety is manifested through reading special surah in the Qur'an, namely Surah Yusuf, Surah Maryam, Surah Lukman, and Surah Al-Waqi'ah. The four surah contain symbolic meanings such as perfection for the baby, ease in the process of giving birth, giving an educated character, and the sustenance. This meaning is complemented by traditional attributes such as food in the form of ketupat which in shape symbolizes the four directions and one Qibla, which is towards Allah the Creator.

The number of Sasak followers of the indigenous beliefs on Tebango, North Lombok has shrunk significantly since 1965. The causes are complex yet principally it is external pressure to relinquish these traditions, often derogatorily labelled as ‘syncretistic, that has forced many Sasak to abandon their ancestral beliefs for one of the state-recognised religions. Nevertheless, the recent Constitutional Court Decision 97/2016, followed by the Circular Letter (2018) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Republic of Indonesia, prompts a re-examination and Revitalization of identity. The paper examines key aspects of this question relevant to contemporary discussions regarding the Tebango Buddhism beliefs. It explores the etymology of the word ‘syncretism’ and highlights the problematic use of the word in Indonesian Studies as reflecting European Orientalist perceptions of non-European cultures whose value judgements are no longer relevant. This paper argues that the dynamics and changes of Tebango Buddha is actually far more historically recent than often thought. Tebango Buddhism beliefs may be understood as the complex outcome of Lombok’s long and dynamic interaction with the wider pesisir world of the archipelago, notably Java during the time of the wali songo, which cannot be simplistically dismissed as ‘syncretism’. A better understanding of this history may contribute to contemporary religious education and community wellbeing in order that young Indonesian Muslims develop a more nuanced, and less biased, understanding of the extraordinary rich – and diverse – history of religion in Indonesia.
