Abstract

This article aims to investigate the linguistics characteristics of male and female students with different cultures in using language in boarding house. The method of the study is descriptive qualitative research. Qualitative research focuses on understanding social phenomena and providing rich verbal descriptions of setting, situations, and participants. It means the data are in the form of words and sentences. The data is taken from 4 males and 4 females students who live in boarding house. The sample of this research will be taken through random sampling technique. This research has indeed revealed a unique gender differences between Bataknese and Karonese students. The results of this study find out that there are no consistent characteristics of male and female students with different cultures in using the language in boarding house. Male use the female’s linguistic characteristics, such as: declaration with interrogative intonation, tag question, emotional reference and high of politeness, vice versa, female uses the male’s linguistic characteristics, such as: direct, judgement adjectives, less of politeness and brief sentences. Indeed, this study find out that Bataknese female students are more dominant use male’s linguistic characteristics.Keywords:gender, linguistic characteristics, language use , culture, utterances

Abstract

The purpose of this study are; 1) to examine the existing reading materials used today by the students of light motor vehicle program; 2) to find out the reading materials needed by the students of light motor vehicle program; 3) to develop the reading materials students of light motor vehicle program based on quantum learning model.  This study is descriptive qualitative research. This study inspired by ten stages of Educational Research and Development model by Gall, Gall and Borg, 2003, but in implementing the model is simplified and adapted to Dirgayasa (2011) become four steps: 1) Evaluation and need analysis, 2) designing new material, 3) validating material, 4) revision and final production. The Instrument of collecting the data was collected by questionnaire, documentation and interview. The result of this study showed that the students agree that they really need the relevant material which proper to their program and the analysis of the existing reading material and the existing syllabus showed that the both are less relevant for English reading skill for light motor vehicle students. From evaluation research of documentation and interview agreed that the developing of reading material for light motor vehicle is needed combined with the quantum learning model. the final result of this developing material through quantum learning become some activities; enrolling, experience, labeling, demonstration, review and celebrate and with new title which has correlation with light motor vehicle program they are: 1) Introduction world of automotive;, 2) Introduction to tools used by mechanics; 3) Safety rules automotive maintenance safety; 4) How cars work; 5) Light vehicle clutch system; 6) General maintenance. Keywords: reading materials, light motor vehicle program, quantum learning model.

Abstract

The objectives of this experimental research were to find out whether: (1)The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Read, Ask, Put, and Paraphrasing (RAPP) strategy was higher than that taught by using Direct, Reading Thinking, Active (DRTA) strategy, (2) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high self-regulation was higher than that low self-regulation, and (3) there was an interaction between teaching strategies and self-regulation on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade XII of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Sipirok of 2016/2017 academic year. There were 63 students as samples of this research by applying cluster random sampling technique. The instruments of this research were reading comprehension test and questionnaire sheet. The data were analyzed using ANOVA at the level of significant α = 0.05. The result of the data analysis proved that: (1) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using RAPP strategy was higher than the students were taught by using DRTA strategy (2) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high self-regulation was higher than the students were given low self-regulation, (3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and self-regulation. The students’ achievement in reading comprehension is influenced by teaching strategies and self-regulation. Keywords: teaching strategies, self-regulation, reading comprehension

Abstract

This study deals with euphemism of surah Al-Baqarah in the Holy Qur’an. It was aimed for investigating the types of euphemism used in surah Al-Baqarah, to describe realization of euphemistic expressions in surah Al-Baqarah, and to elaborate the reasons for realization of euphemism in surah Al-Baqarah. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data analyzed were sentence to sentence which contained euphemism. The source of the data was taken from Tafseer Ibn Kathir Vol 1-10 in the English language with Arabic verses. The researcher is the key instrument of the research. The result showed that there were 29 verses that contained of euphemism of surah Al-Baqarah. It divided into four concepts found in surah Al-Baqarah and one concept as new finding found in surah Al-Baqarah. Specifically, 1 (4%) for Shortening, 7 (23%) for Remodelling, 17 (59%) for Semantic change, 2 (7%) for Borrowing, and 2 (7%) for narrowing as new finding. The dominant types of euphemism of surah Al-Baqarah was Semantic change. It means that Muslim have to understanding and comprehending the meaning deeply. The ways of euphemism realized in surah Al-Baqarah, namely direct, indirect, implicit, and explicit. The reason euphemism realized in surah Al-Baqarah to soften a vulgar expression. In certain social contexts, they are used to avoid embarrassment and the direct mention of social taboos. In other situations, they are used to give more importance and a higher status to certain individuals and events.Keyword: Euphemism, Taboo, Surah Al-Baqarah

Abstract

The research dealt with Metaphor Sentences. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the translation strategies of metaphors are used in The Magic of Thinking Big and (2) to describe the translation strategies maintain metaphors in The Magic of Thinking Big. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were sentences. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument was the documentary sheet. The technique of data analysis was descriptive. The finding of this study revealed that: (1) The metaphor in The magic of Thinking Big were translated by applying six translation strategies, namely: word for word Translation (5.3%) lieral translation (4.3%), faithful translation (57.5%), Free translation (3.2%), communicative translation (30.5%) and discursive creation was found (2.2%). (2) The metaphors are maintained that found in the Magic of Thinking Big are original metaphors turned into another original metaphors, stock metaphors turned into another stock metaphors, adapted metaphors turned into adapted metaphors, dead metaphors turned into dead metaphors, original metaphor turned into stock metaphor, stock metaphor turned into original metaphor, meanwhile, 10 original metaphors and 1 dead metaphor are no longer classified as metaphors. Language has special characteristic that is metaphor sentences, therefore in the case of translating of metaphor sentences in which their concept in unknown for readers, the translator often faces the problems to find out the translation strategies to translate metaphor in a source language (SL) and how the metaphor sentences are maintained in the target language (TL).Keywords : Metaphor, Translation Strategies, Maintain Metaphor

Abstract

This study deals with the language maintenance of Balinese in Langkat. This objective of the study was to examine the factors affecting the Balinese language maintenance in Langkat. This study was descriptively qulitatively conducted. The subjects taken were 20  males and females of Balinese. The use of instruments in this study were interview to gain the factors of Balinese language maintainance in Langkat. The theories of Holmes was used in this study. The data were analyzed by using Spradley analysis (1979). There are seven factors affecting Balinese language maintenance in the first and the second generation of Balinese in Langkat found as the findings of the study such as; ethno linguistic vitality, using language in family domain, using language in neighborhood domain, using language in religion domain, using language in workplace domain, practice of traditional ceremony and an additional factor that found by researcher as a new insight in this research is interaction with older people. Analysis of data clearly indicates that Balinese language maintenance were done in Langkat.Keywords: language maintenance, factors affecting language maintenance, Balinese in Langkat

Abstract

This study presents a research conducted on Experiential Function in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. The main objective was to describe the types and the dominant processes and Circumstances in Experiential Function in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. It presented a qualitative design dealing with quantifiable (numeric) mode. The source of data was taken from Experiential Function in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. The data were collected by applying documentary technique. The data analysis found out the findings indicating that there were 6 types of process used, they were 21 (22.11 %) Material Process, 39 (41.06 %) Mental Process, 28 (29.47 %) Relational Process, 0 (0.%) for Behavioral Process, 6 (6.36 %) Verbal Process, and 0 (0. %) Existential Process. It means that the dominant pattern of Process is Mental. Meanwhile, there are 7 patterns of Circumstances found in the Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China They are 0 (0 %) for Extent, 31 (32.63%) for Location, 13 (13.68%) for Manner, 5 (5.26%) for Cause, 5 (5.26 %) for Contingency, 0 (0 %) for Accompaniment, and 0 (0 %) for Role. It means that the dominant pattern of Circumstance is Location. It proves that the use of Process and Circumstance were related to the context of situation.Keywords: Experiantial Function, Jokowi’s speech, Process.

Abstract

This study aimed at exploring the speech acts in police investigative interviews. The objectives of the study were to discover, to explain how types of speech acts used by the interviewers and interviewees in the police investigative interviews on Michael Brown’s case and to elaborate the reasons. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were the utterances gathered from the interviewers and the interviewees in two different investigative interviews. They were then analyzed by using Searle’s Speech Acts theory. The findings revealed that the five types of speech acts, namely representative, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative were found in the first investigative interview. However, declarative was not found in the second investigative interview. The most dominant type from the two investigative interviews was representative speech act. The most dominant speech act performed by the detectives and special agents as the interviewers was directive speech act. The most dominant speech act performed by the suspect and the witness as the interviewee was representative speech act. The interviewers and interviewees performed them in two ways, direct - literal way and indirect - literal way, in which the direct - literal way was the most dominant one. The main reason why the interviewers performed directive speech act in the form of questioning, clarifying questioning and confirming questioning was to find facts and information. On the other hand, the interviewees performed the representative speech act in order to inform, explain, describe, affirm or deny. The direct - literal way was dominantly performed because all the participants want to avoid misunderstanding through ambiguous words or sentences since the investigative interviews are serious things.Keywords: interview, investigative interviews, speech acts

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study investigates interpersonal metaphor in “Indonesia Now” English news TV program based on Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. The objective of the study are to identify what types of interpersonal metaphors in “Indonesia Now”, to describe how those interpersonal metaphors are used, and to explain in what context those interpersonal metaphor are used. A qualitative descriptive research design was used in this study. The data were taken from one weekly broadcast Indonesia Now in January to June 2017. The data were collected by recording the “Indonesia Now” program on Metro TV, then transcribing the program broadcasts into written text, classifying the data into types of interpersonal metaphors and then drawing conclusion from the data. The findings of the study show that there are five types of interpersonal metaphor used in “Indonesia Now”, namely metaphor of mood, modality, epithet, euphemism, and connotation. The use of interpersonal metaphor in “Indonesia Now” is realized by use of incongruent types of expressing meaning in interaction. In addition, the use of interpersonal metaphor, it is also found that expressing emotion as the new findings of this study which not in line with the previous theories. The speaker use interpersonal metaphor to accurately reflect their point of view and express the emotion and this purpose can be achieved with the reference to social context which named context of situation. Keywords: Interpersonal Metaphor, Systemic Functional Linguistic, Indonesia Now

Abstract

This study deals with the Language Maintenance of Javanese Intermarriages in Rantau Utara. It employed qualitative research design with a case study. This study aims to describe: (1) the factors of language maintenance and (2) the the way of Javanese Intermarriages maintained the Javanese language (3) the reasons of Javanese Intermarriages maintained the language. The subjects were 20 Javanese Intermarriages.They were chosen because many of Javanese people who married with other ethnic. The instruments used of this study were observation, questionnaire and interview. The data were analyzed by using Miles,Hubberman and Saldana’s data analysis. The result of the study were found that there were six factors of Javanese language of maintaining the language namely seeing each other frequently (100%), neighborhood domain (97%), ethno linguistic vitality (100%), family domain (99%), religion domain (55%) and practice the traditional ceremony (35%). Then the way of maintaining the javanese language were found namely acquisition of the language (40%), create a socially integrated population of native speakers (60%), localities of habitually using the language (80%) and the last was speak language in area oral competence (35%).The reasons of Javanese Intermarriages maintained the language namely show identity (90%), Pride (100%) and keep the language (100%). Keywords: language maintenance, intermarriages, ethnic
