Abstract

The development of digital media, particularly YouTube, has transformed communication patterns and information consumption from passive reception to more participatory engagement. As an audiovisual platform, YouTube enables creators to build audience involvement through narratives that are delivered in personal and persuasive ways. Amid increasingly intense competition among content creators, digital storytelling has emerged as a strategic approach to attract attention while fostering audience interaction. Nessie Judge is one of the creators who consistently applies digital storytelling through her NERROR content on YouTube. This study aims to explore the digital storytelling strategies employed by Nessie Judge and analyze how these strategies construct audience interaction within the comment section. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, using a single NERROR video selected purposively as an information-rich and analytically relevant case. Data were collected through non-participant observation of both the video’s narrative structure and the dynamics of audience responses in the comment section. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify storytelling patterns and forms of audience engagement. The findings indicate that the digital storytelling strategy is constructed through a coherent and emotionally driven narrative structure, reinforced by tempo management, contextual visual and audio elements, and a personal communication style that fosters a sense of closeness. Audience immersion in the narrative is reflected in reflective and discursive responses that appear asynchronously in the comment section. These findings demonstrate that long-form storytelling practices on YouTube can sustain audience attention while simultaneously generating interactive engagement within the digital public sphere.

Abstract

A film poster is more than an ordinary image; it is a visual communication medium representing specific cultures and ideologies. Amidst animated narratives that often glorify the ideal family, the film The Willoughbys (2020) presents a unique satirical approach to themes of imperfect or dysfunctional families. This study addresses a central question: how does the poster, as a primary visual representation, convey a narrative that challenges such norms?. Utilizing Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory—encompassing denotation, connotation, and myth—within a qualitative constructivist paradigm, the research demonstrates the poster's role as a complete narrative text. The findings reveal that the poster systematically constructs a comprehensive narrative through a strategic orchestration of visual signs. Specifically, the premise of family dysfunction is established through compositional separation between the background and foreground. The core conflict is manifested in the visual contrast between rigid, passive parent figures and proactive, dynamic children. Furthermore, the inciting incident is symbolized by a satirical travel brochure representing a rebellion plan. Ultimately, the poster transcends mere character introduction to function as a standalone text that effectively encapsulates the film’s critique of "The Myth of the Ideal Family".

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the discourse of historical reconstruction of the 1998 tragedy depicted in the film "Pengepungan di Bukit Duri," amidst the gap in the younger generation's memories of the event. The study employs Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis, encompassing the levels of text, social cognition, and social context. Furthermore, Social Construction Theory and Modes of Reconstrued Realities are also used to support the research. The results show that at the text level, the racist lexicon and visual symbols of the scenes and attributes depicted in the film construct opposition between the majority and the minority, as well as practices of dehumanization. At the social cognition level, the film reflects the ideology of its creator, making it a means of social critique inspired by the 1998 tragedy. At the social context level, the film functions as a medium for the practice of memory politics, shaping commemoration through the social awareness of the younger generation. Theoretically, this research strengthens the relevance of Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis, which examines film as a medium that is not neutral and can be used to convey a certain ideology, and shows how Modes of Reconstructed Realities are processed through the formation of social awareness that is instilled through the social reality displayed in film scenes.

Abstract

Digital transformation has positioned social media as a primary space for interpersonal relationships while generating new psychological vulnerabilities in romantic dynamics. Exposure to open, symbolic, and ambiguous social content fosters social media jealousy, a form of jealousy shaped by interpretations of a partner's digital activities. This study aims to examine the roles of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and social comparison in shaping digital jealousy among active social media users in dating relationships. Using a quantitative correlational design, 213 young adults were recruited via purposive sampling. Instruments included the FoMO scale, the Iowa–Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM), and a modified social media jealousy scale. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that FoMO and social comparison simultaneously have a significant effect on social media jealousy (). Partially, FoMO contributes to online relational surveillance, while upward social comparison fosters insecurity and distorted relationship evaluations. These findings confirm that digital jealousy is a multidimensional psychological construct formed through the interaction of cognitive and emotional factors within the social media ecosystem.

Abstract

Limitations in language processing and attention among students with intellectual disabilities often hinder full comprehension of classroom instructions, requiring teachers to adapt their communication to support learning and the development of functional independence. This study aims to describe teachers’ adaptive communication when interacting with students with intellectual disabilities at SLBN 8 Jakarta as an effort to build student independence. A qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design was employed. Data were collected through classroom observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving three teachers, three Grade 8 students as informants, and one senior special education teacher or expert; data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. Findings indicate that adaptive communication is dominated by convergence strategies in Communication Accommodation Theory, including concise and concrete verbal instructions, breaking tasks into small steps, repeating key words, and checking comprehension. Nonverbal support is provided through demonstrations, gestures, eye contact, friendly facial expressions, and the use of visual or multimedia aids. Relational elements appear through emotional support, a calming tone of voice, and positive reinforcement, while limited divergence emerges when teachers assert rules to regain students’ focus. Together, these strategies promote students’ functional independence, such as initiating tasks, following work sequences, seeking help appropriately, preparing learning tools, and tidying up after activities. The findings highlight the need for consistent strategies across teachers and strengthened school–home collaboration to sustain independent habits across situations.
