Abstract

The habit of staring at gadget screens for long periods can cause eye health problems, such as eye fatigue, dry eyes, and the risk of early myopia. This study aims to design character designs as a visual communication medium in conveying eye health education to early childhood. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques, through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and literature studies. The design result in three main character designs, namely Aksi, Ema, and dr. Lensa. This design shows that a visual approach trough character designs that are close to the world of children can help convey educational messages that are interesting, communicative, and easy to understand.

Abstract

Logos play a crucial role in building the visual identity of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the digital era. Besides serving as a business identity, logos also serve as visual media that communicate cultural values and local characteristics. This study aims to analyze how MSME logos in Sambas Regency represent and build local identity through multimedia design. Using a qualitative approach, this study employs Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic framework to examine the visual elements contained in selected MSME logos. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed by identifying icons, indices, and symbols represented in the logos. The findings indicate that visual elements such as local fauna, geographical features, colors, and cultural symbols are consistently used to represent the social and cultural characteristics of Sambas. These elements not only strengthen brand identity but also serve as representations of local values and community identity.

Abstract

Changes in consumer behavior in the digital era require Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) not only to rely on product quality, but also to strengthen brand image through structured, consistent, and persuasive digital media. Rumah BUMN Rembang has assisted hundreds of MSMEs and initiated the collective campaign Lasem Eksotis to promote culture-based local products, particularly Lasem batik and leather crafts. However, the digital promotion of assisted MSMEs remains fragmented across multiple platforms, resulting in weak visual consistency and underdeveloped cultural storytelling, which limits audience awareness, interest, and trust. This study aims to design a digital advertising interface in the form of a landing page themed Lasem Eksotis as an integrated promotional medium and a visual storytelling tool to support the expansion of MSMEs' market reach. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a User-Centered Design (UCD) paradigm, positioning MSME actors and Rumah BUMN facilitators as primary users. Data were collected through triangulation methods, including field and digital observation, semi-structured interviews, literature review, and visual documentation. Data analysis was conducted qualitatively through data reduction, thematic categorization, and 5W+1H analysis to map user needs. The result is a landing page design concept functioning as a digital campaign hub that integrates cultural narratives, MSME profiles, product showcases, artisan stories, credibility elements, and soft-conversion calls to action with a mobile-first and sustainable user experience.

Abstract

Green Zoil is a lubricant oil product specially formulated for optimal engine performance. With superior additives, this oil promises maximum engine performance, component protection, cost-effective maintenance, and high efficiency. However, the Green Zoil logo is currently considered outdated and bears a resemblance to other brands’ logos; therefore, a redesign of its visual identity is necessary. This study employs qualitative methods through interviews, observations, and literature reviews. Analysis utilizes David E. Carter’s logo analysis method, the SWOT matrix, and brainstorming analysis. The design process follows Robin Landa’s five-stage design process: Orientation, Analysis, Concepts, Design, and Implementation. The results of this design project include the brand’s visual identity in the form of a Brand Identity Manual, a Graphic Standards Manual (GSM), and various other supporting materials.

Abstract

Pop-up books are conventionally identified as literacy media for children. However, contemporary developments in visual communication design have opened wide opportunities for exploration targeting adult audiences who require more complex, deep, and immersive narrative experiences. This study aims to compare the design strategies of adult fiction pop-up books through two distinct approaches: a focus on world-building in the case study of Game of Thrones, and a focus on character-driven narrative in the case study of Bram Stoker's Dracula. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, utilizing literature studies, mechanical structure observation of paper engineering techniques, and perception surveys to map the aesthetic preferences and emotional responses of adult audiences. The results indicate that both approaches require significantly different mechanical manifestations. In Game of Thrones, macro-scale paper engineering mechanisms, such as parallelogram structures and multi-tiered folds, are effectively utilized to construct spatial grandeur, architectural complexity, and physical landscapes of the fictional world. Conversely, in Bram Stoker's Dracula, micro-interactive mechanisms such as pull-tabs, volvelles, and hidden form transformations are applied to subtly visualize psychological changes, a horror atmosphere, and the emotional depth of the characters. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that the effectiveness of adult fiction pop-up books highly depends on the precise synchronization between paper engineering techniques and the core narrative pillars. The world-building approach demands vast and grand spatial representations, whereas character narrative requires more intimate and personal physical interactions to reinforce textual interpretation. Thus, pop-up books are proven to be an exploratory medium in visual communication design capable of dynamically combining engineering art, literary narrative, and tactile interaction for adult readers.

Abstract

Jepara wood carving is an Indonesian cultural heritage shaped through historical, social, economic, and political interactions from the Kalingga Kingdom era to contemporary globalization. This study examines the periodization and transformation of form, function, and meaning in Jepara wood carving as an ongoing negotiation between local tradition and modern demands. Employing a historical-descriptive approach based on literature review and visual documentation, the study identifies four key periods: an early kingdom period in which carving served as a symbolic-religious medium; a colonial and Kartini period marking the transition toward commodification; an industrial period driving production expansion and motif standardization; and a contemporary period characterized by design simplification under global market pressure. Findings indicate that the persistence of Jepara wood carving lies not in formal stability but in its adaptive capacity to shifting socio-economic contexts, while its meaning has shifted from cosmological symbolism toward visual identity and a city-branding instrument. These findings underscore that safeguarding Jepara wood carving requires an integrated strategy combining design innovation, vocational education, and history-based cultural policy. The study offers an original contribution through a form-function-meaning negotiation framework for periodization, enriching heritage sustainability and city branding scholarship within traditional craft-based creative industries.
