Abstract

This study aims to discuss Turkey, an empire that emerged after the end of the Umayyad, Abbasid, Fatimid, Seljuk, Ayyubid, and Mamluk periods. This study uses a qualitative method with a social history approach. The social history theory is a way to systematize, categorize and provide a social historical interpretation of the development of the Ottoman Empire until it became Modern Turkey. This study concluded that the Ottomans became one of the great Islamic empires with a huge territory that defeated the previous dynasties. The territory of power stretches from the continent of Asia, Africa and even to Europe. In 1942 the Ottoman caliphate changed from an empire to the Republic of Turkiye spearheaded by Mustafa Kemal Attaturk. In this phase Turkey was subjected to a wave of secularism and westernization that turned into a massive revolution and the jargon that emerged was the absolute separation of religious and state affairs in the truest sense. The next phase was the re-emergence of Islamic power which was started by Necmettin Erbakan by founding the Refah party. Despite being overshadowed by a powerful military force, the Islamist group has gained public sympathy. Today, modern Islamist groups continue to have public support led by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with the AKP party. Various political, social, economic and influential achievements continued to be achieved during this leadership. Domestic political stability with the Kurds has improved in addition to socio-political stability in the Middle East, Asia and Europe. In the context of social history, Turkey underwent a transformation starting from a monarchical caliphate, then to a secular republic and finally entering the phase of the modern Islamic republic.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Buy Now Pay Later (PayLater) consumption using the perspective of Jürgen Habermas’ theory of communicative rationality, focusing on how digital financial services shape public consumption patterns and construct pseudo-needs. The study aims to analyze the influence of PayLater on consumer rationality and decision-making behavior in the context of digital capitalism. This research employs a qualitative approach with a literature review method. Data were collected from reputable scientific journals indexed in SINTA and Scopus, supported by academic database searches such as Google Scholar. The selected literature was based on relevance, credibility, and publication year (2020–2024).The findings indicate that PayLater services encourage consumptive behavior by promoting instant gratification and the construction of pseudo-needs, which weaken individuals’ communicative rationality. Consumers tend to be influenced by systemic and technological structures embedded in digital platforms, resulting in less critical and less reflective financial decisions. Therefore, strengthening critical awareness and financial literacy is essential to maintain rational control over consumption. PayLater technology should not dominate human values but must remain guided by ethical considerations and real needs.

Abstract

This article examines the dynamic negotiation between Islam and Minangkabau adat in contemporary West Sumatra, framed within the philosophical principle of Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah (ABS–SBK). While previous studies often emphasize harmony between adat and Islam, this research argues that their relationship is better understood as an ongoing process of negotiation shaped by legal pluralism, cultural hybridity, and public reasoning. Drawing on qualitative methods—literature review, limited ethnographic observation, and in-depth interviews—this study employs the theoretical frameworks of cultural hybridity (Bhabha), legal pluralism (Benda-Beckmann), and Islamic public reasoning (Bowen). The findings reveal that the interaction between adat and Islam is not static but continuously reconstructed through social practices such as inheritance, marriage, gender relations, and local governance. This study highlights the urgency of understanding how local Islamic practices adapt to modernity, globalization, and changing gender norms. It contributes to sociological debates by demonstrating that Islam in Minangkabau operates as a flexible and dialogical system that accommodates local traditions without erasing them.

Abstract

This study examines the use of social media by the Public Relations of the Jombang Regency Education and Culture Office in disseminating public information. The research problem stems from the tendency of government public relations communication to remain one-way, despite utilizing digital media such as Instagram and the official website. The purpose of this study is to describe the use of social media and websites as public information media and to analyze these communication practices from a sociological perspective. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques such as observation of Instagram and website content over the past six months, digital archive documentation, and in-depth interviews with public relations staff. Data analysis was carried out through reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions using triangulation of sources and techniques. The results show that Instagram is actively used as a medium for publishing activities and announcements, while the website functions as the institution's official archive. However, public relations communication practices are still dominated by a one-way pattern with a low level of public interaction. From the perspective of Max Weber's legitimacy theory, digital media functions as a means of maintaining bureaucratic legitimacy. Meanwhile, based on Jürgen Habermas's public sphere theory, digital media has not fully functioned as a dialogue space between the state and society. This study emphasizes that the digital transformation of government public relations requires a change in communication paradigm to be more participatory and responsive.

Abstract

The Smart Kampung Program in Banyuwangi Regency is an innovation in local government governance aimed at improving the quality of village-based public services through the utilization of information technology. Although various studies have discussed Smart Kampung as a public service innovation, research that analyzes this program from the perspectives of collaborative governance and New Public Governance remains relatively limited. This article aims to analyze the implementation of the Smart Kampung Program as a collaborative governance practice involving local governments, village governments, communities, and non-government actors within a public policy network. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach through a literature review and analysis of policy documents relevant to the implementation of Smart Kampung in Banyuwangi Regency. The analysis uses a collaborative governance framework to examine collaboration dynamics, actor capacity, and relationships among stakeholders. The findings indicate that the Smart Kampung Program has established a multi-actor collaborative network and encouraged the repositioning of the local government’s role as a facilitator. However, the quality of collaboration has not yet been fully substantive, as it continues to face challenges such as gaps in human resource capacity, limitations in technological infrastructure, and low levels of community participation. This article emphasizes the importance of strengthening collaborative governance to enable the Smart Kampung Program to sustainably create village-based public value.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the local wisdom in weton calculation within the Javanese traditional marriage practices in Karang Tanjung Village, Padang Ratu Sub-district, Central Lampung Regency. This local wisdom includes aspects of weton calculation based on the Javanese calendar, which is believed to influence the success and harmony of marriage. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The study is analysed using the theory of symbolic interpretation, which emphasises that cultural practices contain symbolic meanings understood collectively by the community. The purpose of this research is to explore the meaning of local wisdom in weton calculation, the factors that sustain its use, and the forms and meanings embedded in its application in Javanese traditional marriage. The results show that, firstly, weton calculation is not merely a predictive method but also reflects local values such as mutual cooperation, simplicity, kinship, and mutual respect, as manifested in the preparation and implementation of traditional weddings involving active community participation. Secondly, the factors that encourage the continued use of weton calculation include adherence to local customs and traditions, belief in the accuracy of weton predictions, and personal experiences. Thirdly, weton calculation, which is based on the combination of days and market cycles in the Javanese calendar, plays a significant role in determining auspicious days for wedding ceremonies, involving the use of the Javanese calendar system, observation of lunar cycles, and interpretation of symbolic meanings embedded in each combination.

Abstract

Local property tax reforms are increasingly promoted to strengthen fiscal autonomy in developing contexts, yet sharp tax increases often trigger community resistance when perceived as unfair and poorly communicated. This article examines the protest episode surrounding the PBB-P2 increase in Bone Regency, Indonesia, focusing on how structural conditions and mediated narratives shaped collective resistance. The study employs a qualitative case-study design based on document and media-text analysis of online news coverage from the Tribun News Group, using thematic, narrative, and media discourse analysis to trace escalation pathways and actor configurations. The results show that resistance developed incrementally, moving from public complaints to an organized protest peak on 13 August 2025. Farmers and small traders emerged as central actors, articulating economic vulnerability and fiscal injustice, while students functioned as brokers that amplified mobilization and legitimacy. The absence of effective socialization and the regent’s limited direct engagement contributed to a legitimacy deficit, accelerating escalation and disorder. These findings suggest that local taxation disputes become contentious politics when economic strain, perceived distributive injustice, and weak accountability mechanisms converge.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the extent to which panic buying fuel during the crisis in West Aceh affected community social solidarity. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data was collected through primary observation at fuel stations in Meulaboh City, West Aceh, as well as through literature studies from books, scientific journals, research reports, and documents related to energy crises and community social behavior. Data analysis utilized Emile Durkheim's theory of social solidarity. The research findings indicate that panic buying behavior of fuel caused the weakening of mechanical social solidarity due to the emergence of individualistic attitudes, distrust, and competition among residents. However, on the other hand, this crisis also fostered organic solidarity through cooperation and mutual assistance among residents in obtaining fuel and seeking collective solutions. Fuel scarcity can be addressed through various means, one of which is through the optimization of Village Funds. Sustainable Community Empowerment can serve as a solution through sustainable alternative energy, particularly by utilizing plastic pyrolysis technology. This technology offers a dual solution: reducing dependence on subsidized fuel (such as diesel and Pertalite) while effectively addressing the plastic waste problem that pollutes the environment. In West Aceh, village funds can be used to establish small-scale pyrolysis facilities that will convert local plastic waste into fuel oil, gas, and carbon black, all of which have economic value. This approach not only enhances community energy independence and creates new business opportunities but also aligns with coastal community economic empowerment programs and green technology-based waste management. The successful implementation of plastic pyrolysis technology as a long-term solution depends heavily on three main pillars. First, Education and Training for the community to ensure proper technology management. Second, Infrastructure and Funding utilize village funds to establish communally managed facilities. Third, Socialization and Government Support from local to central levels to encourage adoption and project sustainability. By optimizing village funds for pyrolysis projects, communities can achieve energy independence, reduce the government's subsidy burden, and significantly improve environmental conditions from plastic waste pollution.
