Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of an ethnobotany-based inquiry model on the plant literacy skills and sustainability awareness of students at SMAN 1 Suliki regarding the digestive system topic. A quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The sample was selected using purposive sampling: class XI F5 served as the experimental group (receiving the ethnobotany-based inquiry model), while class XI F3 served as the control group (receiving the direct instruction model). Data were collected through tests and questionnaires assessing plant literacy skills and sustainability awareness. The results showed that the experimental group achieved a higher N-Gain in plant literacy skills compared to the control group (which fell into the low category). Regarding sustainability awareness, the experimental group achieved an N-Gain in the medium category across all indicators (0.57–0.61), also outperforming the control group. Hypothesis testing yielded a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05) for all indicators across both variables. Thus, it can be concluded that the ethnobotany-based inquiry model has a positive and significant effect on the plant literacy skills and sustainability awareness of SMAN 1 Suliki students regarding the digestive system topic.

Abstract

Contextual learning has strategic relevance for strengthening environmental literacy among pre-service primary teacher students, yet its integration in learning media courses remains predominantly technical and less contextual. This study aims to analyze the effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) on environmental literacy competence at Universitas Halim Sanusi Bandung. The study applied a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design. The research population consisted of students enrolled in the Learning Media course, with a total sample of 98 students divided into experimental (n = 49) and control (n = 49) groups. The sam-ple selection procedure employed purposive sampling based on class availability and equal group size considerations. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, and Pearson correlation. The findings indicated a signifi-cant improvement in environmental literacy in the experimental group (Sig. 0.012 ¡ 0.05) and a strong positive correlation between pro-environmental attitudes and environmental literacy scores (r = 0.684; p = 0.000). The discussion confirms CTL as an effective learning ecosystem to support both cognitive ecological understanding and affective environmental reinforcement through authentic contextual experiences. The study concludes that CTL is more effective in improving environmental literacy competence than learning without contextual intervention. It is recommended that lectur-ers adopt CTL based on local environmental issues, while institutions provide systematic support through innovative, sustainability-oriented pedagogical training.

Abstract

Biology education involves numerous interconnected concepts, necessitating teaching methods that help students link information ia a structured manner. This study aims to examine the impact of the mind mapping method on student activity and learning outcomes in biology classes at the senior high school level (SMA/MA) through a literature review. The review analyzed scientific articles published between 2019-2025, sourced from Google Scholar and other academic databases using keywords such as “mind mapping,” “learning outcomes,” “learning activity,” and “biology learning.” The findings indicate that the mind mapping method generally has a positive effect on enhancing student activity and learning outcomes in biology at the senior high school level. Improvements in learning outcomes were evidenced by higher grades and increased mastery of the material. Furthermore, the mind mapping method fosters student engagement in processing information, participating in discussions. Additional research is needed to further explore the simultaneous impact on both of these aspects.
