Abstract

Based on readability tests at several schools, picture storybooks were well-liked by students and motivated them to read. However, not many teachers can draw to enhance their work. Meanwhile, illustration fees in Papua are relatively expensive. This community service activity aimed to provide training for teachers to create illustrations for the children's stories. This service activity involved six elementary school teachers in Jayapura City. The activity, conducted from June to July 2025, used a participatory and collaborative method between lecturers, illustrators as trainers, and students. The chairperson and members collaborated to prepare participants, trainers, training materials, story materials, and training designs. The trainers taught how to create illustrations using Canva based on stories prepared by the team. This activity resulted in three picture storybooks: "Lula and Luli," "Amerensi Boat," and "Betel Leaf from Grandma's Garden." Through the results of the limited readability test, the children understood the stories and enjoyed the pictures in the stories. Furthermore, through this activity, the participants gained insight and knowledge to improve the children's stories they wrote with their own illustrations. They also resolved to disseminate what the learned to their fellow teachers.

Abstract

Conceptual understanding is central to geometry learning, yet many junior high school students find geometric objects and their properties highly abstract. This community service program was conducted at SMP St. Antonius Padua Sentani, Jayapura Regency to strengthen Grade VIII students’ understanding of plane and solid geometry through a Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. The program used context-based problems, concrete manipulatives, guided discussions, and structured practice. Program effectiveness was evaluated using a one-group pretest-posttest design (n=20). The mean score increased from 34 (pretest) to 41 (posttest) with an N-gain of 0.11 (low). Although the learning gains were modest, the activities improved student engagement and supported the transition from contextual situations to formal geometric representations. The results suggest that continued implementation and repeated cycles of RME-based instruction with richer tasks and longer duration are needed to achieve stronger learning gains.

Abstract

Fish have traditionally been the main source of protein for indigenous communities living around Lake Sentani. The fish include both endemic and introduced species. However, despite frequent consumption, community knowledge regarding the nutritional composition of these fish remains limited, even though they are generally perceived as highly nutritious and beneficial. In response, this community service program sought to provide information on the nutritional value of native fish species from Lake Sentani, as well as non-native species. The program was implemented in Yoboi Village on May 18, 2025, using lecture and interactive discussion methods with two target groups: adolescents and adults of both sexes. The adolescent session consisted of a presentation followed by a question-and-answer discussion, with participants’ knowledge evaluated through pre- and post-tests. The adult session followed a similar approach, emphasizing the nutritional benefits of local fish species. Results from the adolescent group revealed a moderate level of understanding, indicating the need for continued education to strengthen awareness of the importance of fish consumption. Overall, fish constitute a vital source of high-quality protein that should be regularly included in the diet of all age groups, from children to adults.

Abstract

Local wisdom is an essential part of the life of indigenous communities, not only strengthening cultural identity but also holding the potential to enrich the learning process in schools. Through this community service activity, a local culture-based teaching supplement was developed to support elementary school teachers in linking lessons to values that are alive in the community. The activity took place at SD YPK Ifar Babrongko, Kampung Yoboi, and involved direct collaboration between academics and the local indigenous community. The implementation was carried out through field observation, interviews with community leaders and teachers, group discussions, and pilot testing of teaching materials in a learning environment integrated with nature and local culture. The results show that teachers began to realize the importance of local culture as a learning resource. They were not only able to develop culture-based teaching materials but also demonstrated a shift in teaching methods that were more contextual and closer to the students' lives. As a contribution to community service, this activity successfully created a collaborative space for co-producing culturally responsive educational knowledge between the academic community and indigenous communities. The development of this learning supplement not only strengthened the pedagogical capacity of teachers in indigenous areas but also fostered institutional partnerships between universities and local communities in supporting cultural preservation and improving the quality of primary education.

Abstract

Critical and innovative thinking skills are essential requirements for students to meet the global challenges. One strategy to develop these skills is through participation in the Indonesian Student Research Olympiad (OPSI), which requires collaboration between teachers and students in implementing fundamental research concepts. However, the implementation of basic research concepts within the high school curriculum remains limited. Consequently, collaboration with higher education institutions serves as a potential solution, specifically through research training and mentoring. This training initiative aimed to enhance the research competence of teachers and students at SMAN 1 Ambarawa by providing methodology training and mentoring for OPSI research teams, conducted by a faculty team from Satya Wacana Christian University. The program was conducted intensively consisting of research design training and research mentoring for nine student groups. The training and the mentoring were provided by lecturers whose expertise aligned with the specific OPSI proposal topics of each group. This mentoring resulted in an overall improvement in the research capabilities of both teachers and students, with one group successfully won a gold medal at OPSI 2025. In conclusion, this program results in a positive reception, which expressed the hope that similar initiatives can be conducted on a regular basis.
