Abstract

Studies on gender representation in contemporary Indonesian film and series increasingly highlight how female characters challenge traditional norms of femininity. However, depictions of women with masculine traits are still relatively limited, creating a gap in understanding how such identities are constructed through visual and verbal signs in local media. This research discusses the representation of female masculinity in the series Bandelnya Judith by Andi Bachtiar Yusuf using Barthes’ semiotic study. The aim of this research is to describe the form of female masculinity representation through visual and verbal signs found in the series. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with content analysis, while data was collected through non-participatory observation technique (SBLC), note-taking technique, and recording technique. The research results show that Judith’s character represents masculinity based on Chafetz’s criteria, namely physical appearance, functional, sexual, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, and personal character. Through Barthes’ semiotic theory, it was found that denotative meaning displays masculine behavior directly, connotation affirms values or views toward visual imagery, while at the myth level there is a shift in social meaning showing social beliefs regarding women’s roles. The emerging myths show that masculine traits are not only possessed by men. This research found six out of seven Chafetz’s masculinity criteria demonstrated by Judith as the main character. This confirms that Judith represents a woman with masculine character who challenges traditional gender stereotypes and presents a new view that masculine traits are not only possessed by one particular gender.

Abstract

Language is one of the important aspects in determining the feasibility of textbooks. This is because language quality determines the effectiveness of textbooks in delivering material. The use of inappropriate language can cause the learning process to become less optimal. As the main learning resource, textbooks need to present language that conforms to linguistic rules. This research aims to describe the language feasibility contained in Indonesian Language textbooks for SMK/MAK class X published by Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbud) and Erlangga. The type of approach used is descriptive qualitative with content analysis research method. Meanwhile, the data collection techniques used are documentation and sampling, as well as conducting data analysis with an interactive model. The results of language feasibility research show that both textbooks obtained a very feasible category with a slight percentage difference. The Kemendikbud textbook received a percentage of 94%, while the Erlangga textbook showed a percentage of 92%. Overall, both textbooks show findings that are in accordance with the assessment indicators. Thus, this study is expented to be beneficial for teacher and students in using textbooks according to their needs. The findings may also contribute to the development of higher-quality textbooks in the future.

Abstract

Standardized English proficiency test has been an essential part in English language teaching. Despite the fact that globally recognized tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC are, still, dominating, a number of institutions in Indonesia have started to administer their English proficiency tests. One of which is Politeknik Negeri Jember (Polije), a higher educational that focuses on vocational education. In line with its characteristics, developing standardized English proficiency test with vocational nuance should be more acceptable. Therefore, the development of the blueprint of English proficiency test with vocational nuance is conducted through this research and development (R&D). In this case, the blueprint is based on the Common European Framework of Reference as the basis of the development. The initial stage of the development, which focused on the analysis of important aspects of the development of the blueprint, has been completed. The stage is followed by the development stage, which is mainly discussed in this report, by considering the development aspects necessary for the new blueprint. As a result, the new blueprint of EPT Polije is developed and ready to be implemented.

Abstract

The novel Please Look After Mom by Kyung-Sook Shin is a novel that describes the regret felt by each character due to the loss of their mother. Each emotion felt by the characters describes a psychological condition related to Krech & Cruthfield's psychology. This study aims to classify the forms of emotion experienced by the characters and describe the factors that cause the emotions felt by the characters in Kyung-Sook Shin's novel Please Look After Mom. This study uses a qualitative descriptive analysis approach. This study employs Krech & Crutchfield's psychological theory of emotions, utilizing a six-classification framework. Data collection techniques are carried out by reading and noting down things related to the study, then presenting the data by compiling important points. Based on the anaylisis, emotions are classified into six categories: (1) basic emotions; (2) emotions related to sensory stimulation; (3) emotions related to self-assessment; (4) emotions related to other people; (5) appreciative emotions; and (6) moods. The conclusion shows that there are 86 data points related to emotions based on this classification. The study's findings have implications for the development of literary psychology studies, particularly in understanding emotions. This research can also be utilized as literary learning material to enhance emotional awareness and deepen students’ or readers’ understanding of characters and human life. Therefore, this study is expected to broaden knowledge in the field of literary psychology and contribute to a deeper understanding of various types of emotions experienced by characters as representations of human emotional experiences.

Abstract

The global spread of English has long been entangled with colonialism, imperialism, and unequal power relations. Although English is now spoken predominantly by multilingual users outside traditionally Anglophone nations, dominant norms continue to privilege so-called “native” speakers from the Global North. This study critically analyzes how English Language Teaching (ELT) materials on Instagram reproduce or resist colonial ideologies through digital discourse. Drawing on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and a decolonial framework, the research examines the linguistic, visual, and ideological dimensions of ELT content produced by teachers, influencers, and language schools on Instagram. The analysis focuses on how English is represented, commodified, and associated with modernity, prestige, success, and global citizenship. Using Fairclough’s three-dimensional model (text, discursive practice, and social practice) and Kress and van Leeuwen’s multimodal discourse analysis, the study examines how colonial discourses position “native” English as the norm and Global South learners as aspirational subjects requiring linguistic correction despite Anglophone users no longer constituting the majority of English speakers. The study reveals Instagram as a site of digital colonialism where English operates as both symbolic capital and cultural commodity. Findings identified clear colonial echoes in ELT content, including the use of “bule” as a benchmark, the promotion of white accents and accent hierarchy, and the Westernization of “global.” These practices reinforce racial and cultural hierarchies by positioning Western identities, languages, and aesthetics as the standard for English proficiency and global modernity.
