Abstract

ABSTRACT: This thesis is discussing about the relationship between self confidence and students’ speaking performance, whether there is correlation between students’ self confidence and their speaking performance or not. The objective of this study is to know the relationship between students’ self confidence and their speaking performance. Quantitative research approach was used in this research by using correlation research. The population is all the second semester students of English Department in University of Islam Malang. All the students of second semester have an equal opportunity.Clustered random sampling was used in this research to take the sample based on lottery. The instrument of this research is questionnaire which was adopted from Griffee (1997). The obtained data was analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) 20.0. To reach the objective of the present study, the researcher formulates the research problem as “is there any correlation between self-confidence and speaking performance of the second semester students of English Department at University of Islam Malang?”.The table of correlation reported that Pearson Correlation (r) which represents the correlation between self-confidence and speaking performance is .076. Afterward, the level of significance is at .591 which means P-value is higher than .05. It means that the null hypothesis was accepted and the alternative hypothesis was rejected. In other words, there was no significant correlation between students’ self-confidence and their speaking achievement of the second semester students of English Department at UNISMA. It can be interpreted that the students’ self confidence can not predict their speaking performance. Keywords: self confidence, speaking performance, speaking, correlation

Abstract

Abstrak : Dalam dunia pendidikan abad ke-21 setiap guru dituntut untuk membuat soal ujian akhir dengan tingkatan berpikir tingkat tinggi. Tingkatan berpikir dalam dunia pendidikan dibagi menjadi dua, yaitu tingkatan berpikir rendah (LOTS) dan tingkatan berpikir tinggi (HOTS). Tingkatan berpikir tinggi termasuk dalam tingkatan berpikir kritis, sedangkan tingkatan berpikir rendah termasuk dalam teingkatan berpikir mengingat dan memahami. Yang dimaksud denga tingkatan berpikir tinggi atau (Higher Order Thinking Skill) merupakan cara berpikir yang lebih tinggi dari pada menghafalkan fakta, megemukakan fakta, atau menerapkan peraturan, rumus, dan prosedur. Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) juga disebut kemampuan berpikir strategis yang merupakan kemampuan menggunakan informasi untuk menyelesaikan masalah, menganalisa argumen, negosiasi isu atau membuat prediksi. Yang termasuk dalam HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) yaitu tingkatan C4 (menganalisis), C5 (mengaplikasi) dan C6 (mencipta/membuat). Sedangkan yang dimaksud dengan tingkatan berpikir rendah atau (Lower Order Thinking Skills) merupakan ketrampilan berpikir tingkat rendah dimana tingkatan berpikir siswa hanya sebatas mengingat/memahami. Tingkatan kognitif berpikir tingat rendah (Lower Order Thinking Skills) memiliki tiga indikator yaitu: mengingat (C1), memahami (C2), dan menerapkan (C3). Lower Order Thinking Skills merupakan kemampuan berpikir mengenai ketrampilan reseptif. Fokus dalam penelitian ini ada 2 yaitu: tingkatan berpikir dalam soalsoal ujian akhir semester yang dijabarkan dalam (1). Tingkatan berpikir tinggi (HOTS) (2). Tingkatan berpikir rendah (LOTS). Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan tingkatan berpikir tinggi (Higher Order Thinking Skill) dan mendeskripsikan tingkatan berpikir rendah (Lower Order Thinking Skills). Latar tempat dari penelitian ini yaitu di MTSN Batu. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif evaluatif. Dimana peneliti bermaksud untuk mengumpulkan data tentang implementasi kebijakan. Subjek dalam penelitian ini yaitu soal-soal ujian akhir semester 1&2 mata pelajaran bahasa Indonesia kelas VII di MTSN Batu. Data yang dihasilkan berupa soal-soal ujian akhir semester dan analisis datanya menggunakan studi dokumentasi dimana pengumpulam data yang dilakukan secara tidak langsung dengan cara mengumpulkan sejumlah dokumen yang diperlukan sebagai bahan data atau informasi sesuai dengan masalah yang diteliti. Penelitian ini menggunakan isntrumen human instrumen, maksud dari human instrumen yaitu peneliti sendirilah yang menjadi isntrumen dalam penelitian ini. Berdasarkan hasil dari konteks penelitian dapat diambil kesimpulan bahwa soal-soal ujian akhir semster 1 di MTSN Batu termasuk dalam tingkatan berpikir tingkat tinggi (HOTS) sering disebut dengan berpikir kritis atau sering disebut dengan Higher Order Thinking Skill karena hasil analisis nya sebagian besar butir soal termasuk dalam C4 (menganalisis), C5 (mengevaluasi) dan C6 (membuat/mencipta). sedangkan soal ujian akhir semster 2 masih termasuk dalam soal berpikir tingkat remdah karena analisis yang dihasilkan 55% masih berada pada tahap tingkatan berpikit tingkat rendah (LOTS), yaitu masih berada pada tahap C1 (mengingat), C2 (memahami) dan C3 (mengaplikasi).Kata Kunci : tingkatan berpikir, HOTS, LOTS

Abstract

Abstrak: Resiliensi merupakan kemampuan untuk dapat bertahan dan mengatasi situasi yang menekan psikologis dengan cara sehat dan produktif melalui kreativitas yang dimiliki. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan aspek kreatif serta peran makanan dan rempah Indonesia sebagai bentuk kreativitas untuk beresiliensi tokoh Dimas Suryo dalam novel Pulang karya Leila S. Chudori. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan psikologi sastra dan jenis penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat aspek kreatif dalam proses pembentukan resiliensi Dimas Suryo melalui tujuh faktor sebagai komponen pembentuk resiliensi. Ketujuh faktor tersebut adalah 1) meregulasi emosi, 2) pengendalian dan kontrol emosi dengan baik, 3) mampu mengidentifikasi permasalahan dengan mengenal diri, 4) memiliki sikap empati, 5) sikap optimisme yang melahirkan ide inovatif dengan mendirikan Restoran Tanah Air, 6) efikasi diri dengan keyakinan serta usaha dan pantang menyerah untuk mengajukan visa agar dapat pulang ke Indonesia, dan 7) mampu mengambil hikmah setelah menjalani hidup sebagai eksil politik. Serta bentuk kreatif tokoh Dimas Suryo yang menjadikan makanan Indonesia sebagai sarana untuk memperkuat jati diri atau identitasnya, sekaligus cara mengobati kerinduan terhadap Indonesia karena ia menjadi eksil politik puluhan tahun di Paris yang ditolak kembali ke tanah air oleh Pemerintah Indonesia.Kata Kunci: Resiliensi, Kreativitas, Novel Pulang

Abstract

Abstract: This study done to know the successful and less successful students perceive a good model of speaking lecturer in English department of Universitas Islam Malang, and the similarities between successful and less successful student’s perception of a good speaking lecturers. This study classified to descriptive quantitative research. The finding of the study showed classroom atmosphere as Speaking lecturer who is relaxed but obvious get very strong belief in SS with score 80% and 73% in LS it become the highest score of all categories. In the lowest score successful and less successful students have the same believe that they do not please to the lecturer who often come late. with each score; SS=38%, LS=39%. It becomes the lowest level in all items. In conclusion, the problems most discussed are about the qualified interaction between lecturers and students, as well as clarity about the strategy for delivering material and the comfort atmosphere in the classroom that agreed between the two parties. Then also the personal discipline of the lecturer as the educator towards the process of improving speaking skills.Key words: Good speaking lecturer, Successful students, Less successful students.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This research is carried out to answer the question: (1) what are the speaking problems encounter by third semester students of English Department University of Islam Malang? (2) what are the factors that cause students difficulties in speaking English? .This research is used quantitative and descriptive qualitative approach. The subject of this research is third semester students at University of Islam Malang. To collect the data, the instruments used are a questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire responded by 73 students was used to get data about students’ problems in speaking English which covered five components of speaking skill such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. Meanwhile, the interview involving two students’ interview was conducted to obtain deeper and detailed data about students’ problems and factors causing the problems.The result of this study, that the speaking problems faced by the English students from the third semester in the English department at the University of Islam Malang are similar. The speaking problems based the questionnaire is the external problems with the means score were 28.16 and the average score were 3.11. And the external problems is had by the item 13 with the mean score 3.47.The problems faced by the students based on the questionnaire are limited of vocabulary, difficult to give their idea, and difficult to responding the conversation. When the interviewed session, the result are mainly found in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. In line with this, there are some factors that cause their difficulties in learning speaking English are performance conditions, affective factors, and topical knowledge.Regarding the time and subject limitation in the present study, the next research is suggested to reexamined students’ problems in speaking and factors that cause students difficulties in speaking English by use more than two instruments and used more subjects to interview and to interview many times to achieve data saturation. Abstract

Abstrak:  Tujuan pengembangan ini adalah menghasilkan media pembelajaran matematika berbasis augmented reality materi turunan fungsi aljabar kelas XI. Pengembangan media pembelajaran ini menggunakan model 4-D yang meliputi 4 tahap yaitu define, design, develop, dan disseminate. Produk yang dihasilkan berupa buku pembelajaran matematika berbasis augmented reality yang dilengkapi dengan aplikasi pendukung augmented reality yang telah di validasi. Validator ahli materi menyatakan valid dengan presentase skor 84,17%, ahli desain menyatakan valid dengan presentase skor 84,22%, dan praktisi menyatakan valid dengan presentase skor 84,17%. Sedangkan hasil uji coba pengguna (user) menyatakan bahwa media pembelajaran matematika berbasis augmented reality yang dikembangkan valid dengan presentase skor 80,65%. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa media pembelajaran yang dikembangkan sudah valid untuk digunakan dalam pembelajaran. Kata Kunci:  pengembangan, media pembelajaran, Augmented Reality, turunan fungsi aljabar.

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to describe the vocabulary learning strategies used by high achievers. The research design used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects in this study were fourth semester students who were high achievers in the English Education Department. The subjects in this study were 10 students. To collect data in this study, the researcher using questionnaires to get validity of the data and interviews as supporting instruments. The questionnaire consisted of 25 multiple choices which included 6 kinds of vocabulary learning strategies according to Oxford (1990). The results of this study are high achievers using memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategy in learning vocabulary. Meanwhile, the strategy most often used by high achievers is the compensation strategy. The researcher offer suggestion as follows: 1) For teacher, this research can provide information related to various strategies in learning vocabulary so that it can be used to improve vocabulary skills in students also it can facilitate the teaching and learning process. 2) For students, the students are suggested to use more strategy in learning vocabulary especially compensation strategy. 3) For readers, this research can help readers to increase knowledge about vocabulary learning strategies. 4) For the other researchers, this research can be a reference and can help other researchers to develop similar research so that it is expected to find new findings from the research conducted.Key words: High achievers, advanced vocabulary, vocabulary learning strategies

Abstract

Abstract: Speaking skill is widely considered as the skill that indicates individual’s proficiency in a language. Despite of its importance, speaking skill is not easy to master, as it involves many competencies in pronunciation, lexical, grammatical and semantic elements that causes difficulties in speaking English. Therefore, it is essential to identify English speaking difficulties and its factors that encountered by EFL learners This study carried out descriptive qualitative research method and online semi structured interview as instrument. The data for this research collected from 5 students of English department from University of Islam Malang through the use of WhatsApp voice note. The data are analyzed using qualitative data analysis that consist of data reduction, grouping, coding, display and interpretation. The result finds eight difficulties and ten factors that causes those difficulties in speaking English language. The data also shows that one difficulty can be caused by different factors like nervous related difficulties can be caused by speaking partner and being afraid of mistakes, moreover, one factor are identified to be the causes of many difficulties such as vocabulary that causes many difficulties in speaking. It suggested to understand the speaking problems along with the cause for the students to find solution and anticipation of the speaking problems.Key Words: English speaking skill, difficulties, factors.

Abstract

Abstract:One of the difficulties commonly encountered by students in comprehending reading text is lack of vocabulary mastery. Therefore, the researcher in this study decides to organize research that focuses on the effect of vocabulary knowledge toward students reading comprehension ability. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the students who experience the vocabulary knowledge treatment achieve better than those who do not experience it. The research design of this study was quantitative quasi- experimental study. While, the population of the study was the seven grade students of MTs Miftahul Ulum. From that population, the samples were 43 students of MTs Miftahul Ulum. The instruments of the research were pretest and posttest questions focusing on descriptive text. The scores of the test were collected and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 24. Wilcoxon test and Mann Whitney test were used to analyze the data. The result of the study shows that students’ score of experimental group is significanly higher than students’ score of control group. Therefore, it can be concluded that vocabulary knowledge is a suitable treatment in helping students to improve their reading comprehension.Keywords: vocabulary knowledge, students, and reading comprehension

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate whether students with good self-assess ability have a strong relationship with their English writing skill particularly in writing analytical exposition text. The correlational research design was used in this study in order to measure the correlational between students’ self-assessment and their English writing skill. The data were collected from thirty one (31) sophomore students from F-Class of SMAN 3 Malang which was selected by clustering sampling. They were asked to self-assess their task after writing analytical exposition text which was their current material in English class by giving them a checklist questionnaire regarding the text they had written. The questionnaire consist of twenty-five questions with four big parts; format, content and organization, mechanics and spelling, and language used. To analyze the data Pearson-Product Moment from SPSS v.16 was used. The result of the calculation data was found that the p value (2-tailed) was 0.000 (p < 0.01) indicating that students self-assess did have a strong relationship with their English writing ability which was automatically indicated that students who were aware with their self-assessing ability would also have a better ability in English writing ability. Regarding all those findings, self-assessment is highly recommended for both teacher and students particularly to be applied in classroom activity as a learning method in order to track students’ sense of self-analysing or self-assessing on their English writing skill. Keyword: self-assessment, writing ability, analytical exposition.
