Abstract

This research aims to identify students' statistical literacy abilities, and this type of research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects in this research consisted of 24 Sociology Education students from Muhammadiyah University of Kupang taking statistics courses in the 2023/2024 academic year. The instrument used is an assignment consisting of 2 questions. Data analysis was done by analyzing students' answer documents to complete the assignments given. Students' statistical literacy abilities are identified using five statistical literacy competencies: understanding statistical concepts, insight into the application of statistical concepts, calculation and graphing skills, interpretation abilities, and visualization and communication skills. The research results show that more than 50% of students can fulfill statistical literacy competencies such as understanding statistical concepts, numeracy, interpretation, and communication skills. However, less than 50% of students do not meet competency in insight into the application of statistical concepts and visualization skills. Students' abilities in essential statistical literacy competencies still need to be improved because most students still have limitations in these competencies.

Abstract

Number patterns were one of the mathematical concepts that were studied in junior high school. This concept was useful, but students tended to experience problems when learning it. Quite a lot of research has studied number patterns, but not many have attempted to study alternative solutions to optimize problem-solving abilities and learning motivation, especially using lesson study activities based on didactical design research. Therefore, this research aimed to optimize students’ problem-solving abilities and learning motivation with the preparation of didactic designs through lesson study activities. This research was conducted at a private junior high school in Mataram, Indonesia. Participants in this research were ten class VIII students (six boys and four girls). The researcher was the main instrument, with several additional instruments, such as learning design, observation sheets on problem-solving abilities and learning motivation, as well as documentation studies. The data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis. The research results revealed that the number pattern learning design was able to optimize problem-solving abilities and student learning motivation. Several factors that caused these positive results were the existence of contextual problems as trigger situations in learning and learning activities adapted to students’ hobbies. The recommendation from this research was that learning design should be prepared using didactical design research based on lesson study.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is the ability to identify known information, ask questions, adequacy of the information needed, skill in creating or compiling mathematical models, being able to find the right solution strategy, and being able to explain and check the correctness of the solution obtained. This research aims to analyze students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in the topic on mixed integer arithmetic operations based on Polya's problem-solving steps. This research uses a qualitative approach with a narrative research type. The research subjects consisted of 32 junior high school students. Data collection was carried out using mathematical problem-solving ability test instruments and interviews with several selected participants. Data was analyzed based on Polya's problem solving steps. Based on the results of data analysis, students' problem-solving abilities obtained based on these four steps are in the form of students who can determine important information in the problem and can plan solutions resulting in them being able to solve problems more regularly, namely by executing the plans they have planned. After that, students who understand the problem well can also check the correctness of the answers they have obtained. Therefore, it is hoped that this research can help teachers to implement a learning process that can develop problem solving abilities.

Abstract

Indonesian students' ability in mathematical literacy is classified as low; this is shown in several PISA survey results. What causes students' low mathematical literacy abilities in Indonesia is the need for more application of learning models and media that support students' mathematical literacy abilities. This research analyzes students' mathematical literacy skills using problem-based learning-based mathematical comics. This research is a type of qualitative research. The subjects of this research involved 25 class VIII—1 students at one of the schools in Batanghari, namely SMPN 21 Batanghari. The data collection technique in the study was a mathematical literacy ability test consisting of 5 essay questions. Data analysis in this research includes data reduction, data presentation, and concluding/verification. The research results showed that of the 25 students who took the mathematical literacy ability test, as many as 11 students, or 44%, had high levels of mathematical literacy skills. As many as 14 students, or 56% of students, had moderate mathematical literacy skills. No students had average levels of mathematical literacy skills. Low-level mathematics. Thus, it is concluded that students' mathematical literacy abilities after learning using problem-based learning-based mathematical comics fall into the category of medium-level mathematical literacy abilities as seen from the average score obtained on the students' mathematical literacy ability test, which is 79,72.

Abstract

Solving mathematics problems is a complex cognitive process that involves a series of steps. These steps typically include understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back (checking the solution). While each of these steps is crucial, the ‘looking back’ step has not received much attention in mathematics education research. This study investigated Grade 10 mathematics students’ looking back in solving algebraic word problems in Namibia. The study followed a qualitative approach. The sample of the study was 351 Grade 10 students from ten secondary schools in the Ohangwena Region in Namibia. Data was collected using the Algebra Word problem-solving Achievement Test and Interview. The results show that, in general, the students did not look back on their solutions to the algebraic word problem. While some students indicated that looking back necessitates the consolidation of their work, others said looking back on their solutions could be time-wasting and confusing. These findings point to the need for mathematics teachers in Namibia to incorporate and model the looking-back step of mathematical problem-solving in their mathematics teaching.

Abstract

Metacognition is one of the factors that influences students' success in solving mathematical problems. On the other hand, the reality in the field is that students experience difficulties in solving mathematical problems related to Elementary Linear Algebra because they contain a lot of repetitive calculations, so they require high levels of perseverance and accuracy. This research aims to describe students' metacognitive profiles in solving Elementary Linear Algebra problems in terms of cognitive style. The cognitive style chosen is the conceptual cognitive style of pacing through Matching Familiar Figures Tests with research subjects being mathematics students at Nahdlatul Ulama University, Purwokerto. The resulting metacognition profile was obtained from Elementary Linear Algebra problem-solving test data and interviews, which were analyzed and concluded through a series of method triangulation processes. The research results show that students are reflective and impulsive in carrying out all activities that are indicators of metacognitive awareness and regulation, as well as several indicators from metacognitive evaluation. Fast, accurate students carry out all activities that become indicators of metacognitive awareness, regulation, and evaluation. Meanwhile, slowly, inaccurate students carry out all activities that are indicators of metacognitive awareness and several indicators of metacognitive regulation but still need to be able to carry out activities of metacognitive evaluation.

Abstract

This research applies the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) learning model assisted by Quizizz, which can be a solution for teachers in optimizing students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. This research aims to determine the effect of applying the TGT model assisted by Quizizz on students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. This research is experimental research, with the research design used as a posttest-only control design. The population is all class VII students at MTs Negeri 2 Jakarta for the 2023/2024 academic year, consisting of seven classes. In this research, the sample used was 68 students who were divided into two classes (experimental class and control class). The instrument used in this research was a mathematical problem-solving ability test consisting of 7 descriptive questions. The results of the prerequisite tests for the analysis showed that the data in the experimental class was not normally distributed and had a homogeneous variance, so the data obtained in this study was analyzed using the Mann-Whitney non-parametric test. The results of this research show that students' mathematical problem-solving abilities that are applied using the TGT learning model assisted by Quizizz are higher than the mathematical problem-solving ability of students taught using conventional learning models, so there is an influence of the TGT learning model assisted by Quizizz on students' mathematical problem-solving ability.
