Abstract

Queen Charlotte: a Bridgerton Story a series created by Shondaland and released by Netflix, is a drama series that took place during the Regency era in England. The series is based on historical stories portrayed as a fiction and offers a reinterpretation of the British aristocracy through an inclusive modern lens. This study aims to examine how issues of race and social class are represented in the dialogue narrative and how does this influence the dynamics of the characters in the drama series ‘Queen Charlotte: a Bridgerton Story’. By using qualitative method and using theoretical concepts of double consciousness and the veil by W.E.B Du Bois, this study aims to giving an understanding of how race and social class are connected and shape the experiences of minority group characters who are not understood by majority group characters in the series. The result of this study shows that minority group characters who experience identity conflict inside themselves are showing changes, particularly in the way they navigate their social positions and shape their identities in the middle of a society that is still hierarchical. Keywords: Race, Social Class, Double Consciousness, Veil, Bridgerton

Abstract

Writing remains a persistent challenge for freshmen in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, particularly in generating ideas, applying grammar accurately, and producing coherent texts. This study employs a case study method to investigate students’ perceptions of an e-Multimodality Workbook that integrates visual stimuli within a Task-Based Learning (TBL) framework to enhance writing proficiency in a Basic Writing class. Data were gathered from twelve purposively selected students through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model. The findings show that colored visual prompts effectively enhance imagination, idea development, and comprehension of abstract concepts, whereas black-and-white images and insufficient grammatical guidance hinder clarity and engagement. A pedagogical framework was used in designing the e-Multimodality Workbook, which serves as a learning aid and a medium that facilitates assessment. A linguistic expression in term of visual meaning proses was used in this book. A technology-based adaptive learning materials that integrate multimodal tasks and student feedback is a product of this research. This supports the development of writing competencies at a higher level. Furthermore, the findings suggest that this book can enhance learner autonomy across various levels of EFL proficiency.Keyword: English Writing, Multimodality, Task-based Approach.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into English language instruction has created new opportunities for enhancing learner engagement and communication skills, particularly in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts. In Business English courses, students must master professional speaking tasks that require fluency, accuracy, and confidence. However, few studies have explored how AI tools can be combined with project-based learning (PBL) to support these outcomes. This study examines the use of AI-supported video projects to enhance speaking performance and improve learner perceptions in a Business English classroom. Using a mixed-methods design, quantitative data from pre- and post-tests and qualitative reflections were analyzed. Results showed significant gains in speaking performance and increased learner autonomy, confidence, and engagement. Students also encountered several challenges, including technical difficulties in using AI applications and initial anxiety about video recording, which required patience and self-regulation to overcome. Despite these challenges, students viewed the AI tools as beneficial. These findings suggest that integrating AI into PBL tasks can serve as a transformative approach for ESP instruction in higher education. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence in Education; Business English Speaking Skills; English forSpecific Purposes (ESP); Project-Based Learning; Technology-Enhanced LanguageLearning

Abstract

In the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, formal classroom instruction often limits students’ opportunities to engage in authentic peer interaction and collaboration. Although English clubs are being used more frequently as extracurricular activities, not much study has been done on how they specifically support peer learning in casual settings. This study aims to examine the positive effects of English Club participation on peer learning among students in an EFL setting by identifying peer interaction types, collaborative learning strategies, and students' perceptions of their educational experience.  The researchers employed qualitative case study approach to collect data from 25 English education students at a state university in Gorontalo, Indonesia. For that purpose, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis were implemented. The findings underpin Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory by emphasizing the social component of language learning. This study proposes a theoretical and practical contribution by highlighting the advantages of English Clubs a informal, student-centered environments that effectively uphold peer learning and communicative skills outside of the traditional classroom setting. The research result showed that English Club activities, such as group discussions, pair work, and peer tutoring, encouraged various forms of peer interaction. The collaborative behaviors such as peer correction, cooperative problem solving, and performance tasks are naturally developed in the Club. Students feel calmer and more confident to speak English, besides that their vocabulary and fluency improved. Keywords: English Club, peer learning, EFL context, Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory

Abstract

This research investigates the themes of individual greed and capitalism as portrayed in Martin Scorsese’s film Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). The film chronicles the exploitation of the Osage people in the 1920s, following the discovery of oil on their land. The study aims to explore how greed reflects and perpetuates the capitalist system. Specifically, it analyzes the representation of capitalism in the film through both narrative and cinematic devices. To achieve this objective, a qualitative descriptive method was employed. The analysis included repeated viewings of the film, documentation through screenshots, and an extensive review of relevant literature. This approach was grounded in Marxist theory and the literary framework established by Wellek and Warren. The findings highlight illustration of the interconnection between individual greed and capitalist structures. These findings suggest that the film portrays capitalism not merely as an economic system but also as a mechanism of social exploitation. Within this context, the accumulation of wealth is depicted as being achieved through manipulation, violence, and systemic injustice against marginalized communities. The significance of this study lies in its contributions to the fields of literary and film studies. It illustrates how cinema can reflect and critique the workings of capitalism while offering valuable insights into issues of social inequality. This research serves as a critical reference point for future inquiries in Marxist literary criticism and cultural analysis, informing subsequent critical readings of films that tackle similar themes. Keywords:     Capitalism, Greed, Exploitation, Killers of the Flower Moon

Abstract

This study investigates eighth-semester students’ perceptions of Canva use and its effect on presentation performance in the English Language Education Study Program at Institut Pendidikan Tapanuli Selatan. Twenty students were purposively sampled as research participants to represent those who had sufficient experience using digital presentation tools in academic contexts. Data were collected through close-ended questionnaires and classroom observations to obtain both perceptual and behavioral evidence regarding the use of Canva in presentations. Results from the questionnaire analysis reveal generally positive student perceptions of Canva as a helpful and user-friendly design tool for creating engaging presentation slides. Many students strongly agreed that Canva enhanced their creativity, visual design skills, and enjoyment during the presentation process, which in turn contributed significantly to improved confidence and delivery. In addition, students perceived Canva as an effective platform that helped them organize content more systematically and present ideas more clearly. Classroom observations corroborated these findings, showing enhanced student performance when Canva was utilized, particularly in terms of slide aesthetics, audience engagement, and presentation fluency. Overall, the findings indicate that integrating Canva into English language learning activities can positively support students’ presentation skills and foster a more engaging and interactive learning environment. Keywords : Canva Utilization, English Language Education, , Higher Education , Presentation Performance, Students’ Perception.
