Abstract

This article is based on the fact that the hermeneutic theory developed by Jorge J. E. Gracia has a number of similarities with Fazlur Rahman’s hermeneutic theory, which is widely known in contemporary Islamic studies. It seeks to address three main issues: the epistemological structure of Gracia’s interpretive function and Rahman’s double movement, the factors underlying their similarities and differences, and their contributions to the development of Qur’anic interpretation. Using a qualitative literature approach, this study draws on primary sources from Gracia’s A Theory of Textuality: The Logic and Epistemology and Rahman’s Islam and Modernity: Transformation of an Intellectual Tradition, supported by relevant secondary literature. The analysis employs a descriptive-comparative method, utilizing Abdullah Saeed’s framework of textual and contextual interpretation as an analytical tool. The results of the study show that both figures developed their theories from anxiety about existing interpretive practices, and both emphasized a contextual approach. Gracia focuses on validating meaning through textual implications, while Rahman highlights the moral message of the text. Although they differ in their criteria of validity, both aim to balance objectivity and subjectivity in interpretation. Ultimately, their theories reflect a significant shift in Qur’anic studies from a predominantly textual approach toward a more contextual approach.

Abstract

Contemporary Muslim engagements with the Qur’an manifest in various ways. In scholarly discussions, this phenomenon is referred to as the Living Qur'an—how humans engage with and interpret the Qur'an as both a text and a source of significance. An such is the custom in Bangai Village, where individuals read the Qur’an at graves for three consecutive days and nights following a death. This practice is founded on the conviction that the recitations advantage the deceased and demonstrate profound spiritual and social consciousness. This study examines the significance and progression of this tradition. Data were gathered through observations and interviews with key informants using a qualitative descriptive method in field research. The research employs Alfred Schutz's phenomenological theory to comprehend the underlying significances of the activity. The results are categorized into three principal domains. The subjective meanings encompass spiritual and social qualities, whereas the objective meaning emphasizes its educational function. The motivations for the custom are dual: the cause motive indicates its perceived positivity and use in everyday life, while the objective motive pertains to enhancing comprehension of Islamic teachings and promoting fraternity. The reciting tradition adheres to a distinct structure of pre-procession, procession, and post-procession stages, each characterized by particular rites and significance. This study demonstrates the embodiment of the Living Qur’an within local tradition, integrating spirituality, education, and communal cohesion into a significant religious practice.

Abstract

The hudud verses in the Qur’an, such as the prescribed punishment in Islamic law for theft, which includes hand amputation, are often the subject of debate regarding their application in the modern legal system, especially in Indonesia. As a country with a majority Muslim population, Indonesia is faced with a significant challenge to balance the application of sharia with a national legal system influenced by Western laws and local customs. This study analyzes Hasbi Ash-Shiddiqiey's interpretation of the hudud verse in Tafsir An-Nur. This study examines how Hasbi contextualizes the application of hudud law by considering maqasid asy-syari’ah, as well as Indonesia's complex and diverse socio-legal conditions. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with an in-depth analysis of the text of Tafsir An-Nur through the framework of maqasid asy-syari’ah. The study results revealed that Hasbi was not fixated on literal interpretation, but rather considered social factors, such as poverty and social justice, in the application of hudud. The contextual approach emphasizes the importance of protecting fundamental rights and people's welfare, thus making Tafsir An-Nur relevant in Indonesia's pluralistic legal system.

Abstract

Asbabun nuzul plays a crucial role in the hermeneutical approaches of Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd and Hasan Hanafi. Qur’anic interpretation, which is inherently dynamic, goes beyond literal meanings by emphasizing contextual relevance in contemporary discourse. For progressive exegetes such as Abu Zayd and Hanafi, asbabun nuzul narratives foster socio-historical awareness that prevents rigid, purely linguistic interpretations. This study employs a comparative qualitative method through library research, drawing on both primary and secondary sources including books, theses, and scholarly articles. The research yields two main findings. First, asbabun nuzul functions as a dynamic hermeneutical instrument. Abu Zayd treats it as a methodological step in interpreting the Qur’anic text, whereas Hanafi employs it as a foundational tool for practical engagement. Second, in reconstructing the understanding of the stages of alcohol (khamr) prohibition, Abu Zayd identifies three legislative phases (tasyri') and positions asbabun nuzul as complementary, filling interpretive gaps between verses. In contrast, Hanafi interprets the three related verses as responses to the evolving social reality of Arab society at the time, using asbabun nuzul as a contextualizing mechanism. This comparison highlights their shared commitment to contextual interpretation while reflecting differing emphases in hermeneutical application.

Abstract

This study aims to produce a model of the Structure of Hujjah al-Qira’at of Sheikh Mahfudz al-Tarmasi. To find out the authority of Muqri’ nusantara, the authority of Hujjah al-Qira’at (Tawjih al-Qira’at) of Sheikh Mahfudz is urgently studied as a model, considering that he lived in an era of strengthening the network of Middle Eastern and Indonesian Ulama. With the analysis of Argumentation theory, the researcher wants to trace the structure of the argument of Hujjah al-Qira’at of Sheikh Mahfudz, its originality and dynamics/Tajdid as evidence of his authority. The analysis methods used are interpretive and inductive methods. The results of the study show that first, Sheikh Mahfudz has authority in the field of Qira’at Science both riwayah and dirayah. In terms of riwayah he has a chain of chains that are connected to the Prophet. In terms of his personality, he has an authoritative Hujjah al-Qira’at based on a very complex Hujjah component in relying on qira’at to previous muqri’ who are also authoritative. Second, based on the theory of argumentation, the authority of Sheikh Mahfudz’s argument in Hujjah al-Qira’at lies in the systematic and completeness of his argumentation structure pattern which is more dynamic than his predecessors, in this case he has originality and carries out Tajdid.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the functional reception of Surah Ali Imran: 191 understood by the people of Semurup, Kerinci Regency as a prayer for rain in the Bratit Semin tradition. Using the Hans Robert Jauss reception theory approach that emphasizes the response of readers or connoisseurs of literary works to a text. This form of reception is oriented towards understanding the meaning or form of religious rituals. Surah Ali Imran 191 in the early days of Islam was understood as part of the routine of a Muslim's faith, while in modern times began to understand the gift of reason given by God as a way to think. While al-Ghazali understands the meaning of this verse as a way to get closer to Allah through dhikr and prayer in being a solution to every problem faced. By using the descriptive-analytical method, which describes the phenomena that occur with existing data in the form of writing or interviews and then analyzing using Hans Robert Jauss's literary reception theory approach, this article concludes that Surah Ali Imran 191 can be understood as a means of asking for rain when there is a long drought, this is also influenced by the way Islam entered the Kerinci community when it was presented by tarekat scholars who had learned directly from Arabia when carrying out the Hajj.

Abstract

The father significantly influences the quality of connections within the family unit. Despite bearing considerable duties, his presence frequently goes unrecognized, especially by children. The Qur’an delineates the attributes of an exemplary father through diverse narratives, notably the account of Luqman al-Hakim—a sagacious being endowed with insight by Allah SWT, albeit not a prophet. The narrative, located in Surah Luqman verses 12–19, imparts moral lessons and ideals relevant to modern life. This study investigates the Qur’anic depiction of parenthood through an analysis of Luqman’s counsel to his son, with the objective of elucidating the fundamental characteristics of an exemplary father. The study employs a library-based approach and descriptive analysis, concentrating on Sayyid Qutb's interpretation in Fi Zilal al-Qur'an. Research indicates that Luqman epitomizes the quintessential paternal archetype through four principal responsibilities. Initially, he assumes the role of an educator, fostering his child with affection and comprehension. Secondly, he functions as a sagacious advisor, providing counsel grounded in religious principles. Third, he serves as a role model, somebody whom youngsters might admire and ultimately imitate. Ultimately, he assumes the position of family leader, bearing the duty for the household's spiritual and moral guidance. This research underscores the necessity of acknowledging and revitalizing the father's significant role in familial dynamics, utilizing the narrative of Luqman al-Hakim as a perennial exemplar of fostering responsible and value-oriented parenting.

Abstract

One of the most pressing and multifaceted challenges in contemporary society is the issue of justice in human life. Social inequality, discrimination, and disparities in access to fundamental rights - such as education, economic opportunities, and healthcare - serve as tangible evidence that justice often remains an abstract ideal without equitable implementation. This study examines the concept of humanity and justice in Islam through the interpretive framework of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, with a focus on: (1) the definition of justice, (2) the individual as the subject of justice, (3) individual freedom as the foundational principle of justice, and (4) equality as a critical prerequisite for justice. Employing a qualitative research design, this study utilizes a descriptive-analytical method combined with a philosophical exegesis approach, interpreting Qur'anic verses through philosophical theory. The findings indicate that humans, as moral agents, play a pivotal role in the realization of justice. Justice, as a core Islamic principle, originates from divine revelation and embodies balance, harmony, and the proper allocation of all things to their rightful place. Justice is achieved when individuals, acting as its practitioners, consciously and freely acknowledge and submit to Allah as the Creator, fulfill their obligations, and equitably honor the dignity of others. Al-Attas underscores the human role as vicegerents (khali>fah) on earth, bearing the responsibility to uphold justice in alignment with human nature (fit}rah). Furthermore, ethics and one’s relationship with God are identified as essential foundations for fostering justice within society and the state.
