Abstract

This study examines the contestation of the worship space by looking at how three religions: Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, occupy space in the tri-dharma worship building. This paper discusses the conceptual, theoretical, historical, and contemporary political aspects of the three religions in Indonesia and how the Indonesian government has historically encouraged Buddhists, Confucians, and Taoists to worship in the same space. This study surveys secondary data on the architecture of the Tri-Dharma houses of worship in Indonesia and looks at how the elements of each religion are placed in the buildings and how this reflects the contestation of the three religions in Indonesia. The result of this research shows that architectural contestation occurs in the altar room, ornamental, and overall building style. This contestation reflects which sects are dominant and which are peripheral to the three religions. This finding has implications for the importance of efforts to foster harmony between Tri-Dharma religious communities in Indonesia and how each one responds to architectural dominance and builds a more varied architecture of places of worship for the Tri-Dharma religion.

Abstract

The development of higher education institutions in Indonesia is increasing rapidly, one of which is at the Sumatran Institute of Technology or ITERA. One of ITERA’s significant developments is the increase in the number of students. The increasing number of ITERA students certainly impacts increasing the need for supporting facilities around the ITERA campus. One of them is the increasing number of housing needs, in this case, rental housing. Because not a few ITERA students come from outside Lampung Province, rental housing is vital in the ITERA area. The rental housing around the ITERA campus has its type and criteria, so ITERA students have different preferences in choosing rental housing. This study aims to find out what factors are why ITERA students choose rental housing. Research data was collected through a survey process through online questionnaires using a mix-method method, namely a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods. Meanwhile, data analysis uses content analysis and distribution analysis methods. The research results show a tendency for specific reasons toward the preference for choosing rental housing. ITERA students tend to choose boarding houses for privacy reasons, House in multiple occupation for facilities, and dormitory types for financing reasons. In general, ITERA students tend to choose rental housing for financial reasons.

Abstract

Improper seismic design of buildings can lead to collapse and severe damage due to natural and unpredictable earthquake loads. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the effect of the quantity of reinforcement of the frame to the plastic hinge formation of the building at wall frame buildings, this paper proposes a rational seismic design method for the wall frame building by means of the reinforcement control method to protect the lives and property of the people and ensure the seismic stability of the building.

Abstract

Since the 19th century, portal frames have been used to build industrial buildings because the development process is fast, economical, and efficient. This research aims to look at the cross-section of structural elements in BS 5950-1:2000 spans of 15 m and 40 m using SNI 1726:2019 with modal analysis, including horizontal deflection and stress ratio, using LRFD and ASD methods. Then, the structure was revised to be safe against earthquakes researched in three zones, including low (OMF), medium (IMF), and high (SMF) earthquakes. The results of this research show that the horizontal deflection's magnitude still falls within the allowable limit, with the maximum value on Tarutung, the SMF system, and KDS E on a 15-m span of 43.828 mm and a 40-m span of 68.703 mm. However, several of the IMF and SMF systems' cross-sectional structures exceeded the stress ratio capacity. After revision, the percentage ratios of the maximum structural weight using cross-sections on the Indonesian market using two methods and three frame systems with spans of 15 m and 40 m are 16.050% and 17.240%, respectively. The obtained maximum structural weight exceeds the cross-sections of the British standard before revision by 13.935% and 13.187%. It is an SMF system.

Abstract

Lumban Pea Integrated Tourism Development Masterplan is one of the tourism development in the Toba Lake Area located in Toba Samosir Regency. In this masterplan, there are several tourism facilities, one of which is the hotel. The hotel design still does not show and apply the cultural values/identity of the surrounding environment in its design. The building is designed in a contemporary form that does not contain cultural attractions in the form of mass, facades, or cosmological values so that it is contrary to the development of tourism in the Lake Toba area which is still full of strong traditions. This study aims to improve the hotel design in the Master Plan by redesigning the hotel. The redesign of the hotel has created a resort hotel that is capable of blending contemporary design but also capturing its cultural side well. The redesign stage begins with conducting a survey, collecting data. In addition, the application of the Regionalism Architecture approach is one of the methodologies used to obtain design criteria which include cultural values, ornaments, forms, and other cultural resonances which are then analyzed and applied to the design. The hotel serves as a temporary residence and recreation facility for tourists. The redesign of this hotel by applying regional values to be a means of education and cultural attractions so that the culture is better known to the wider community and not eroded by the times. Besides, the redesign of this hotel can create a new economic center.

Abstract

The Sibolga Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science design is a college plan that organizes academic and vocational education in groups of science, technology, and arts disciplines focused on the marine and fisheries sector in Sibolga City. This design is reviewed based on the great potential of fisheries and marine in the Sibolga area. However, it has not been appropriately managed and optimally so far. In addition, the Sibolga Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science design is expected to answer the problem of limited educational facilities, especially in the scope of marine and fisheries science in Sibolga City. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method. Site survey and literature studies on metaphoric architecture principles serve as the primary data collection technique in the study. The application of a design with a symbolic architectural theme is expected to represent the function of the building. Therefore, observers and building users will have their ideas and impressions of the activities that occur in the building through the shape of the mass and the facade of the building. This study can benefit future studies that attempt to apply metaphoric architecture in their design.

Abstract

Indonesia is famous for its rich culture, especially the traditional fabrics of each region. North Sumatra is one of the contributions to that cultural heritage. Weaving Ulos or 'Kain Ulos' is an ancestral cultural heritage that is a symbol of the Batak Toba community in the form of long scarves whose existence decreases dramatically and can experience extinction. The lack of a place or container to preserve Ulos is one of the issues to consider. The design of this ulos weaving craft center must pay attention to the facilities, design concepts, and application of green architecture to the building. The aim is to design suitable support facilities for ulos weaving craft centers, making the ulos weaving craft center as one of the containers to preserve ulos weaving to improve the economy of the surrounding community and apply green architecture to the design to preserve the surrounding environment as well. The process of design approach used in this design is qualitative descriptive. Method by analyzing data collected through field observations to the location of craft centers and literature studies. Energy savings become important points that will be applied to the design of the craft center, such as utilizing sunlight, rainwater and also minimizing artificial air conditioning. Samosir is a strategic and supportive location to apply a green architectural approach in the design of this craft center.

Abstract

Climate change affects many things, especially plant diversity. Indonesia's number of endangered plant species continues to increase every year. Meanwhile, ex-situ conservation and research facilities are still unavailable in North Sumatra. The conservatory itself has the primary function as a conservation institution that seeks to maintain and breed various types of plants, especially endangered plants, used to protect and preserve nature, education facilities, development of science and technology, and recreation. The research was conducted using the descriptive-analytic method by drawing problems regarding the concept of conservatory design that pays attention to the environment while collecting data and theories related to the conservatory. The conservatory applies an ecological architectural approach that includes harmony between humans and nature; the balance of development between the natural environment and buildings that need to be considered will become a sustainable green building. This project is expected to create a medium for conservation and research beneficial to the community, as educational and interactive tourism facilities between humans and nature that are sustainable and have no negative impact on the environment.

Abstract

Pasar Horas is a traditional market with the most extensive building as a traditional market in Pematang Siantar. Pasar Horas provides all the needs of tools and household materials to meet the community's needs, which makes Pasar Horas an essential role in meeting the community's needs. The impact given by the Pasar Horas building must be considered both on the environment and its users. Pasar Horas itself has fairly bad implications when viewed from the aspect of Sustainable Architecture, such as the wrong direction of building orientation, not eco-friendly materials, inefficient land use, and waste management due to market activities, where Sustainable Architecture itself calls for the negative impact of the establishment of the building is not too big. Therefore, the application of Sustainable Architecture in Pasar Horas buildings is needed so that the negative impact caused by the market on the environment and its users can be minimized, which will later be able to adapt Pasar Horas to the new era and become a traditional market that can compete with modern markets to meet household needs of the Pematang Siantar community.

Abstract

The façade as a representative element of an architectural work can be an indicator of environmental character apart from socio-cultural, spiritual, and economic conditions at a certain time. The emergence of new buildings in the city of Medan is facing a rapidly changing face of the city, accompanied by the increasing need for space utilization and variations in building façade designs, where this phenomenon occurs in outer ring roads. Gagak Hitam and A.H. Nasution street, as the outer ring road of the city of Medan, is growing rapidly with various types of functions with the dominance of modern shophouses, which produce a façade typology that can be grouped and looked for differences according to certain indicators in the existing theory review. This study aimed to find a typology of shophouse façades in the corridor of Gagak Hitam and A.H. Nasution street, which became their character. The researcher collected data from literature sources, observed the research area, and redrawn the two-dimensional façade model to identify, in general, the elements and composition of the façade of the research object. According to the findings, there is no special type that becomes the standard for the character of the shophouses in the two road corridors.
