Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to develop and assess the feasibility of ethnoscience-based exploding box learning media that incorporates batik activities to enhance science literacy among elementary school students. Methodology: The research applies a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), though limited to the development phase. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. Qualitative analysis was conducted using feedback from media and content experts, while quantitative data were obtained from expert validation questionnaires. Results: The resulting exploding box media integrated into IPAS learning on the topic of changes in the states of matter for fourth-grade students received an average validation score of 88.23% from media experts and 95% from material experts, both categorized as “very worthy. Applications/Originality/Value: Rooted in the ethnoscientific context of Surakarta’s batik tradition, this media supports differentiated instruction by catering to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. It serves as a culturally responsive innovation that promotes early science literacy through engaging and contextually relevant learning experiences.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to identify and understand the specific role of Special Guidance Teachers (GPK) in supporting the learning process of fourth-grade students at Al Firdaus Inclusive Elementary School. Methodology: The research employs a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews and direct observation to gather comprehensive data on GPK practices and interactions. Results: The findings reveal that GPKs play a vital role in addressing the individual needs of students with special conditions by implementing personalized learning strategies, adapting subject content, maintaining active communication with parents, and collaborating with classroom teachers to develop Individual Support Plans (ISPs). These efforts contribute to notable improvements in students' academic performance, adaptive skills, and motivation. However, GPKs also face challenges such as limited resources and time constraints, which can be mitigated through innovative solutions and strong team collaboration. Applications/Originality/Value: This study highlights the strategic importance of GPKs in inclusive education settings. It emphasizes the need for continuous professional collaboration, resource allocation, and innovation to optimize inclusive practices and ensure that every child receives equitable educational support.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to describe violations of the politeness principles found in the Wkwk Project talk show and analyze their relevance to listening competence in language learning. Methodology: A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to analyze episodes of the “Bocah Bocah Kosong” program on the Wkwk Project (Genflix YouTube channel). Data were collected through listening and recording techniques, focusing on the interactions between the three hosts Meyden, Vior, and Chateez and various guest stars. The analysis identified deviations from Leech’s politeness maxims. Results: Five types of politeness violations were found: violations of the maxims of wisdom, generosity, praise, humility, and sympathy. The hosts often used sarcastic and inappropriate language, including examples where guest stars such as Maia Estianty were addressed disrespectfully. These patterns of speech reflect significant violations of language politeness principles. Applications/Originality/Value: This study reveals that frequent violations of politeness principles in popular media content such as talk shows may negatively affect students’ listening competence. Exposure to impolite or entertaining but irrelevant language may hinder learners’ ability to distinguish essential information and reduce the effectiveness of classroom listening activities. These findings underline the importance of selecting appropriate media for educational purposes.

Abstract

Purpose: This research investigates the specific language needs of esports professionals in Indonesia, particularly assessing whether conventional English classes effectively support their international success. It also explores language barriers that hinder team dynamics and performance. As the global esports industry continues to expand, effective communication among players is increasingly recognized as a critical factor in achieving team success. Methodology: This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data. The participants consisted of 17 esports professionals, including players, coaches, managers, casters, streamers, and brand ambassadors. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and direct observations during esports events organized by local esports bodies. Results: The findings indicate that conventional English classes do not meet the specialized communication needs of esports professionals. Participants reported difficulties in understanding contractual agreements, following instructions from international coaches, and communicating effectively during international matches. These communication gaps negatively impact team cohesion and performance. Applications/Originality/Value: The study underscores the urgent need for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs tailored to the esports context. The results are valuable for educators, policymakers, and esports organizations in designing targeted language training initiatives that align with the unique demands of the esports industry and enhance the global competitiveness of Indonesian esports professionals.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine the use of interactive video media as a strategy to motivate children aged 4–5 years in memorizing short Qur'anic surahs. It focuses on how interactive elements such as text, images, audio, and user interaction can increase children’s enthusiasm and support the effectiveness of the memorization process. Methodology: The use of interactive video media created a more engaging and conducive learning atmosphere for children. The combination of multimedia elements captured the children's attention, helped them stay focused, and reduced boredom during memorization activities. As a result, the children were more motivated and receptive to memorizing short surahs. Applications/Originality/Value: This study highlights the effectiveness of interactive video as a tool for improving early childhood Qur'an memorization. It offers practical insights for educators and parents in selecting appropriate media to support young learners. The findings emphasize the importance of balancing digital media use with direct personal interaction to optimize both motivation and learning outcomes in early childhood religious education.

Abstract

Purpose: This research aims to understand the impact of using animated videos in introducing English language learning to group B children at BA Aisyiyah Jetis 2 Sukoharjo in the 2023/2024 academic year. Methodology: The study employs a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental design, specifically a one-group pretest-posttest model. The sample consists of 25 children in group B. Data were collected through observation, and statistical analysis was conducted using a t-test with SPSS 15.0 for Windows. Results: The observation results show a significant improvement in English vocabulary recognition after the intervention. The average pretest score was 12.68, while the posttest average increased to 20.92. The t-test analysis yielded a calculated t-value of -16.449, which is less than the critical t-table value of -2.064. This indicates that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Applications/Originality/Value: The findings suggest that animated videos are effective in enhancing English language acquisition among young learners. This research provides empirical evidence for educators to integrate multimedia tools, especially animated videos, into early childhood language instruction to increase engagement and learning outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose: This research aims to identify the learner profiles of economics and medical students at a university in Indonesia. The goal is to use these profiles as a foundational reference for customizing English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs to suit students' contextual and disciplinary needs. Methodology: A qualitative approach was employed in this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted in three rounds, each lasting 30 minutes. The participants consisted of 12 ESP lecturers from higher education institutions in Indonesia. Results: The findings revealed that medical students generally have high English proficiency, are hardworking, diligent, highly motivated, well-mannered, active, and goal-oriented. In contrast, economics students tend to be passive, sociable, polite, less motivated, lower in English proficiency, and more dependent on contextual learning. Applications/Originality/Value: This research highlights the necessity of considering students’ distinct characteristics in the development and implementation of ESP programs. Tailoring instructional strategies based on student profiles can significantly enhance the effectiveness and relevance of ESP teaching in higher education contexts.
