Abstract

The beginning of the twentieth century, the city of Surakarta underwent a modernization process that led to economic and political stability. As a result, the city experienced growth in the fields of economy, infrastructure, communication, education, industrialization, and bureaucracy. This modernization was also followed by the Chinese community who immigrated from mainland China. This Chinese community brings new culture from China, one of which is culinary. Many peranakan culinary delights in the city of Surakarta have undergone changes and adjustments. Cultural adaptation allows foreign culture to adapt to local culture. This research was made by historical research methods that include (1) the determination of themes; (2) collection of sources and data (heuristics); (3) criticism (verification); (4) interpretation; and (5) historical writing (historiography). From the research conducted, it was obtained the conclusion that the Peranakan cuisine can be widely accepted by the local (Javanese) community in Surakarta City.

Abstract

This article discusses the natural disasters that occurred in Kerinci during the Dutch colonial period 1920-1939. In this disaster the people of Kerinci suffered enormous losses. For this reason, in the study there are several problems to be discussed, namely, what natural disasters hit Kerinci during the Dutch Colonial period. The historical method used in this research is by collecting data through heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study reveal that Kerinci experienced a series of natural disasters in 1920-1939. Earthquakes, floods, fires, and others. Some events such as earthquakes were not considered destructive, and there were also events that caused material losses and casualties. Kerinci's geography is often a factor in triggering natural disasters to occur. In 1939, an earthquake that shook Kerinci served as a reminder of the potential dangers inherent in its natural beauty, especially the presence of the active Mount Kerinci. Although the community showed resilience and solidarity, disaster management during the colonial period was centered on the government, which undertook mitigation efforts and coordinated relief such as the delivery of medicines and medical and other assistance. This research provides an overview of Kerinci's vulnerability to natural disasters during the Dutch colonial period. While communities and the colonial government attempted to respond to disasters, challenges and complexities remained part of the relief effort.

Abstract

Indonesian historiography is considered to be disoriented in its writing. Instead of building an Indonesiasentrism perspective, it is trapped in colonial historiography. This is due to the lack of diversity of themes and limited sources. One of the efforts to diversify themes and enrich sources can be by studying ancient manuscripts or literature. Studying ancient manuscripts as written sources is considered one of the effective ways of learning history. Because from writing sometimes it can be understood how people thought at that time. One place that holds many ancient manuscripts is Kabuyutan Ciburuy. Many studies on Kabuyutan Ciburuy have used the Old Sundanese script as the object of research, focusing on the writing system and style, but ignoring the substance of the past reality in the ancient manuscripts. The method used in this paper is a qualitative research method with a historical approach. Several manuscripts in Kabuyutan Ciburuy have gone through the digitization and language translation stages. These include Sweka Dharma, Kawih Katanian, The Story of Rama Rahwana's Son, and Amanat Galunggung. Ancient manuscripts cannot be separated from mythical content. It is necessary to understand the cultural background of the local community to be studied. So that historical facts are found in the manuscripts. The utilization of the ancient manuscripts of Kabuyutan Ciburuy certainly needs an approach and other auxiliary sciences, in order to be able to distinguish between reality or myth.

Abstract

The general judicial institutions in Indonesia comprise the District Court, High Court, and Supreme Court. These three entities adjudicate a spectrum of cases, spanning from general criminal and special criminal cases to special civil and religious civil cases, which are addressed at the courts of first instance, appeal, and cassation levels. The court proceedings encompass a plethora of information that is notably rich. Nevertheless, historians have not widely incorporated this resource into historical writing endeavors. This research endeavors to assess the extent to which archives from public justice institutions can be employed in historical documentation. Employing a literature study research method, the findings indicate that the diverse cases adjudicated by public justice institutions serve as invaluable historical sources. Their presence not only contributes information pertaining to the legal domain but also illuminates the social, economic, and political facets of a society. This wealth of information is encapsulated in the archives of proceedings, Investigation Reports (BAP), and court decisions. Access can be facilitated through the Supreme Court website or by directly visiting the court office.

Abstract

This research aims to discuss the development of education in the Bajubang area. Ethical politics was a pioneer in the development of education in the Dutch East Indies region. The implementation of this ethical political policy was carried out by the Dutch as an opportunity to obtain cheap labor from the native community. Schools began to be built by the Dutch in various regions in Indonesia, one of which was Bajubang. The development of education in the Bajubang area cannot be separated from the petroleum exploitation activities carried out by the NV NIAM company or the oil company owned by the Dutch government in Jambi. NV NIAM established a lower level school called SR NIAM and managed by the company. During Japanese rule, this school only carried out teaching and learning activities for a year and resumed operations after Indonesia's independence. After independence, SR NIAM experienced development and changed its name to SR PERTAMIN, in 1964 it became SD PERTAMIN. The curriculum used by this school follows government standards. In 1968, PERTAMIN Elementary School was changed to Pertamina I Elementary School and Pertamina II Elementary School, until in 1995 these two schools were merged again to become YKPP Bajubang Elementary School. This research uses historical research methods which include heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography.

Abstract

This research aims to explore Tan Jing Sing's role in determining the direction of Chinese-Javanese relations in Yogyakarta. The historiography of the Yogyakarta Sultanate has been dominated by narratives that describe the roles of Javanese nobles, while the Chinese community only receives a minimal portion of the historiography. This research is expected to fill the gap in the existing historiography so that it can further illustrate the relationship between this community and the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. This research uses the historical method, which includes heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, focusing on Tan Jin Sin and the Chinese community in Yogyakarta in the early 19th century. The results show that the conflict between Sultan Sepuh and Crown Prince Raden Mas Surojo was the main cause of Tan Jin Sing's entry into Yogyakarta's political sphere. Tan Jin Sing's involvement in the turmoil was like a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the conflict benefited the Chinese community in Yogyakarta as their economic and political position became more prominent. However, on the other hand, their lives became unsettled as social jealousy arose, leading to the anti-Chinese sentiment among the community.

Abstract

The period of physical revolution in Indonesia was a difficult time for the people of Kebumen. During that time, many social changes occurred which put pressure on people's lives. The previously calm social life for lower-class people suddenly had to change. People are faced with feelings of anxiety and fear of violence that suddenly appear. Since its arrival in Indonesia, the Dutch army carried out its military aggression which was the beginning of this disaster. For the people of Kebumen, the occupation of part of the Kebumen region by the Dutch army with the use of Gombong as their base as well as the demerger line between Dutch and Indonesian rule made the people's conditions increasingly difficult. This article focuses on the social conditions of the people of Kebumen during the revolutionary period which describes the difficulties faced by the people because of the violence they often experienced in the form of arrests, torture and shootings.
