Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using YouTube videos of procedure text to improve students' speaking skills in the tenth grade of SMAN 5 Enrekang. This research is pre-experimental research involving one class that is given a treatment. The population of this research is the tenth-grade students of SMAN 5 Enrekang. The sample was obtained from the population using the cluster random sampling method where one class, class X KM 8, which consists of 33 students, was selected randomly. The data collection process involved the administration of a speaking pre-test and post-test. The data collected from the speaking oral test was analyzed quantitatively using the IMB SPSS application and was used to compare the pre-test and post-test using the Paired Sample T-test. The analysis results show that the mean pre-test score is 34.36 with a "very poor" classification, and the mean score of the post-test is 60.45 in the "fair" classification. Based on the hypothesis of this study, there is a significant effect of using YouTube videos of procedure text in improving the students' speaking skills in the tenth grade of SMAN 5 Enrekang. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of YouTube videos of procedure text improves the speaking skills of the students in the tenth grade of SMAN 5 Enrekang.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine whether the use of the Spotify application can improve students' listening skills. This research used a quantitative approach with a purposive sampling technique and used a pre-experimental design. The population of this research consisted of XI Nursing class students of SMKS Laniang Makassar, South Sulawesi, with a sample size of 27 students. Data collection was done through pre-test and post-test. The results of the analysis showed that the mean value of the pre-test was 59.22 with a classification of “very poor” and the mean value of the post-test was 74.11 with a classification of “good”, the probability value (sig. 2-tailed) < 0.001, which is lower than the significance level of 0.05. The researcher found that the H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. Based on the results of data analysis, the researcher concluded that the use of the Spotify application improves students' listening skills at SMK Laniang Makassar.

Abstract

This study is quantitative research that aims to know the development of ADDIE Model-based Smart Reading Comprehension Application for reading class at SMPIT Nurul Fikri Makassar and the validity, effectivity, and practicality criteria. The population was students of the ninth grade in SMPIT Nurul Fikri Makassar which consisted of four classes with a total population of 80 students. the researcher used a random sampling technique and the researcher chose one class from the four classes in Grade 9th. The sample in the class consists of 20 students. The development of a web-based smart reading application goes through a stage, namely prototype evaluation. At this evaluation stage, it is carried out to test whether the system being developed meets the valid, practical, and effective criteria. From two expert validators, an average of 3.68 was obtained with a percentage of 89.90%. As for the content aspect, an average of 4 is obtained with a percentage of 100%. As for the average results of the two expert validators above, if converted into a validity category table, a very valid category is obtained. Testing the practicality of the web-based smart reading application obtained a result of 82.83%. If converted into a table of percentage ranges and product criteria for practicality analysis, we get a practical category. The results of effectiveness obtained were 88.75 % with the highly effective criteria. Students’ perceptions of convenience, motivation, attractiveness, and usefulness toward the prototype of the reading comprehension application developed in this research showed a positive response.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using an interactive quiz (Quizizz application) in improving the speaking ability of grade nine students at SMP Negeri 2 Sungguminasa. This study is a Pre-experimental involving one class that was given special treatment. The population in this study was grade nine students of SMP Negeri 2 Sungguminasa consisting of 11 classes, the sample in this study from the population using the cluster random sampling method, where one class was randomly selected, namely class X5 consisting of 30 students. The data collection process involved giving a speaking test before treatment and a speaking test after treatment. The data collected from the oral speaking test was analyzed quantitatively using the IBM SPSS Version 22 application and used to compare the test results. Pre-test and post-test using paired sample t-test. The results of the analysis showed the average score of the pre-test was 41.33 with a classification of “poor” and the average score of the post-test was 72.4 with a classification of “good”. Based on this study, the results of the hypothesis t-test showed a significance value of <000, which is lower than the significance level of 0.05. The results of the pre-test and post-test obtained t-table 2.0481 df 28, and p<000, there is a significant effect of using the quizizz application in improving English speaking skills of the grade nine students at SMP Negeri 2 Sungguminasa.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out whether the use of TikTok Application as online English learning medium can improve students’ vocabulary mastery and to find out students’ perception of the use of TikTok Application in learning English vocabulary. This research was conducted at SMA Katolik Messawa. The population in this study were students of class X IPA SMA Katolik Messawa. The researcher used a purposive random sampling technique for class X IPA as the sample in this study. This study used a pre-experimental one group pretest posttest design method. The instrument used by the researcher is a vocabulary test and a questionnaire. Then several treatments were carried out and at the end of the meeting a vocabulary test was again carried out. Based on the results of the average calculation, it is known that the use of TikTok Application can improve students' vocabulary mastery, where the mean posttest is greater than the mean of pretest. Then the researcher concluded that the use of TikTok Application can improve students' vocabulary mastery. Students perceived the use of TikTok Application in learning English vocabulary quite positively. Their perceptions to the twelve statement items were dominated by positive responses, they surely have positive thoughts about the use of TikTok Application to improve their vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perceptions of English Education students towards educational podcasts as a tool to improve their listening skills. The subjects of this study were five students of English Education class E. The interview was used as the main instrument to collect data. The results of this study show that three English education students perceive that they use podcasts quite often to improve their listening skills. There are several reasons, namely podcasts have flexibility in viewing time, can increase student learning motivation, and also podcasts can increase student vocabulary. The other two perceive that they do not often use podcasts to improve their listening skill because there are several reasons, such as the videos they watch are sometimes too long and also the influence of networks that are sometimes less supportive so that they interfere with students' focus on watching podcasts.

Abstract

This research aims to discover the factors and ways students overcome difficulties in speaking English in non-English major students. This study used a descriptive qualitative research method, and the variables in this study are the factors of difficulty in speaking English and also how students overcome these difficulty factors. The subjects of this study were students from non-English major students, namely in the Indonesian Languages and Literature Education study program in 2023, with as many as 3 participants. The data of this study were obtained by conducting direct interview guidelines. The data analysis technique used is the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, including data condensation, data presentation (data display), and conclusions drawn. Based on the analysis, the results of the study show that non-English major students face difficulties in learning English due to challenges in vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, fear, and lack of confidence. Overcoming these barriers requires a combination of strategies, such as utilizing online resources, practicing pronunciation, building confidence, and seeking support from peers and mentors. By adopting proactive measures and embracing a growth mindset, students can improve their English skills and overcome speaking difficulties effectively.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the correlation between teachers’ pedagogical competence and students’ learning motivation in English. A correlational quantitative research design was used in this research. The samples consisted of 27 students of class XI.2 from MAN 2 Polewali Mandar who were selected using a cluster random sampling technique and 3 English teachers. Data were collected through teacher competency test and questionnaire. The results of this research show that the correlation between teachers’ pedagogical competence and students’ learning motivation of rxy = 0.655 (within the range 0.60-0.799), where the two variables have a high correlation and positively correlated. It can be concluded that the hypothesis which states that there is a correlation between teachers’ pedagogical competence and students’ learning motivation in English is accepted. This means that the higher the teachers’ pedagogical competence, the higher the level of students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

This study is the perception research that aimed to find out students' perceptions regarding the use of YouTube videos to improve speaking skills and to find out whether YouTube videos can be used to improve students' speaking skills. This study used a quantitative method by taking samples with a questionnaire research instrument. The subjects of this study were 30 Business English Communication Students Class of 2020. Data analysis used in this study is data analysis using validity and reliability tests. The results showed that the perceptions of students indicated that using YouTube videos to improve speaking skills was effective. And the results of the questionnaire consisting of 19 items show the results obtained from the study, namely 78% in the Strongly Agree category. Based on these results, YouTube videos can be productive and effective media to be used as learning media to improve speaking skills which also include student vocabulary and pronunciation.

Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate how effectively Google Classroom can improve students' listening skills at SMPN 21 Makassar. A quantitative research method using a pre-experimental design was implemented. The participants were eighth-grade students from SMPN 21 Makassar, with one class chosen from a total of six through cluster random sampling. Specifically, class 8E was selected, which had 20 students. To gather data, listening tests were conducted both before and after the intervention. The collected data were analyzed using a t-test with a significance level set at 0.05. The research revealed a p-value (sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which is lower than the significance threshold of 0.05. As a consequence, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Moreover, the effectiveness of Google Classroom, assessed through the N-Gain score, indicated a moderate level of effectiveness. Therefore, the researcher concludes that Google Classroom is relatively effective in enhancing students' listening skills at SMPN 21 Makassar.
