Abstract

This paper examines the intricate dynamics of historical interactions between indigenous citizens and Chinese descendants in Indonesia, focusing on the economic and political dimensions of these relationships. It specifically investigates the significant contributions of KH. Abdurrahman Wahid, known as Gus Dur, in advocating for the rights of Indonesian Chinese citizens through the lenses of humanity and pluralism. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, primarily based on library research, the study reveals that during the New Order, discriminatory policies—most notably Presidential Instruction Number 14 of 1967 issued by President Soeharto—imposed severe restrictions on the cultural and religious practices of Chinese Indonesians. In contrast, Gus Dur emerged as a key proponent of democracy, justice, and human rights, championing freedom of expression and the right to worship according to individual beliefs. His pluralistic and humanitarian perspective played a vital role in defending the rights of Chinese descendants in Indonesia. Ultimately, this study underscores the significance of Gus Dur's legacy in the ongoing struggle for equality and human rights within the context of Indonesia's diverse population.

Abstract

One of the most common issues in marriage is the marriage contract, which might take days to finalize. It happens when a guardian refuses to marry off his daughter because he disapproves of the marriage. Therefore, Malojongkon Boru is frequently practiced to get the approval of the woman's guardian or father. The subject of discussion for this study is the transition of the nasab guardian to the judge guardian in the practice of Malojongkon Boru. The focus of the problem in this study is the perspective of Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and Traditional Leaders on the transition of nasab guardian to the judge guardian in Malojongkon Boru marriage practice. This study is a field research with a qualitative approach. The data sources are classified into field data as primary data, including interviews and documentation, and literature data as secondary data. The findings indicate that MUI and Traditional Leaders view the transition of marriage guardians in the practice of Malojongkon Boru marriage as conducted in conformity with Islamic law.

Abstract

This study seeks to determine the role of religious counselors in strengthening religious moderation in Cinta Damai Village, Deli Serdang North Sumatra. As part of the da'wah (preaching) movement, religious counselors are in charge of providing religious understanding and resolving community issues. This study uses a qualitative method with a field study approach and descriptive design. This approach allows in-depth data mining related to the views, experiences, and understanding of the community toward the role of religious counselors. Field studies were conducted to obtain contextual and relevant data on the conditions of Cinta Damai Village. The findings reveal that religious counselors have a crucial role in strengthening religious moderation through three main functions: informative, consultative and advocative. Messages about tolerance, interfaith dialog, and legal awareness have proven to be important elements in building a peaceful society. However, religious counselors faced challenges, such as a public misunderstanding of the concept of religious moderation. To address this issue, religious counselors must actively educate people to respect differences and live a harmonious religious life. Eventually, this study confirms that religious counselors play an important role in fostering a peaceful environment.

Abstract

Social media has transformed Indonesia's social activism landscape, especially in efforts to build peace and interfaith dialogue. This study uses a virtual ethnographic approach to examine how four interfaith communities (JAKATARUB Bandung, PELITA Padang, Eco Bhinneka Kalbar, and Peace Generation Makassar) use Instagram to promote peace and interreligious dialogue. This study analyzes digital content activism strategies, communication patterns, and community engagement approaches through systematic digital analysis observations and Instagram archives. The findings indicate that these communities have developed innovative ways of utilizing Instagram features to create meaningful interfaith dialogue, combining local wisdom with universal peace values. They use a variety of content formats, including educational infographics, personal storytelling, and interactive discussions to engage young viewers. Although these communities face challenges such as limited algorithms and resources, their adaptability shows the potential of digital platforms in fostering interfaith dialogue and peacebuilding. This research makes three important contributions: first, developing a comprehensive analytical framework for studying peace activism in the digital era; second, uncovering effective strategies for integrating local wisdom with digital activism; and third, offering a practical model for developing sustainable social media-based peace programs.

Abstract

YouTube, as a media platform, has become an important means for preachers to spread da'wah studies, especially among teenagers from the Branch Children's Association (PAC), the Nahdlatul Ulama Student Association (IPNU), and the Nahdlatul Ulama Female Student Association (IPPNU) in Juwana District. This study investigates how da'wah content on YouTube can increase religious interest among teenagers, especially when they face difficulties in participating in da'wah directly. The novelty of this study lies in its innovative approach to utilizing digital media to convey religious messages, which are relevant to today's challenges. The methodology used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection through interviews and documents. Data analysis was carried out using the Miles and Huberman model technique. The findings demonstrate that da'wah content on YouTube is easily accessible and diverse, allowing teenagers to choose based on their interests. Furthermore, the discussions reveal that the da'wah videos significantly increase awareness and understanding of religion among the younger generation and positively impact their religious studies.

Abstract

This study examines the Isra' Mi'raj, the miraculous nocturnal journey of the Prophet Muhammad, through the lens of the tafsir interpretations of Al-Zamakhshari and Al-Razi, with a focus on the differing views of these two prominent scholars. The event, which encompasses the Prophet's journey from the Al-Haram Mosque to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and his ascension to Sidaratul Muta, where he directly encountered Allah SWT, has been subject to diverse theological and interpretative discussions. This article employs a descriptive and qualitative methodology, utilizing library research for data collection and content analysis to examine the relevant tafsīr texts. The comparative analysis reveals that Al-Zamakhshari asserts the event took place at the Al-Haram Mosque in a spiritual form, prior to the Prophet's prophethood, whereas Al-Razi posits that the Isra' Mi'raj occurred in the general Haram area, specifically in the house of Umm Hani bint Abi Talib, a year before the Hijrah, and involved both body and spirit. The study further explores the interpretive approaches of both mufassirun, highlighting differences in their methods, theological beliefs, the location of departure, the timing of the event, and the nature of the ascension itself. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the variances in the interpretations of this pivotal event in Islamic tradition.

Abstract

The implementation of Islamic inheritance law is a religious obligation for every Muslim, as mandated by the Qur’an, Hadith, and the consensus (ijma') of the Prophet’s companions. However, its application often faces obstacles due to limited public understanding, as seen in Brahu Village, Siman Subdistrict, Ponorogo. This study aims to explore the community’s knowledge, practices, and efforts to apply Islamic inheritance law while formulating an educational model suited to local socio-cultural characteristics. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews and observations, the research found that inheritance distribution predominantly follows customary practices based on equal sharing (dum podo). Discussions on inheritance are typically delayed until the 1,000th day after death or longer if a spouse survives. Raising the issue immediately after death is considered culturally inappropriate and contrary to the value of pekewuh (reluctance). Despite this, there is a sincere desire within the community to understand and implement Islamic inheritance principles. Therefore, a gradual, systematic, and community-based educational strategy is needed, utilizing religious gatherings such as Yasinan, Aisyiyah, Fatayat, and mosque caretaker (takmir) training programs. The implementation of Islamic inheritance law can be carried out harmoniously within families, starting with education on fundamental principles such as the obligation to identify heirs and their shares according to Islamic rulings, followed by a distribution process based on mutual agreement when necessary. This approach serves as a bridge that allows Islamic inheritance law and local traditions to coexist.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the revitalization of self-identity within the Penelando Islamic indigenous community of the Sasak people in response to global cultural change. As globalization intensifies, indigenous communities face increasing challenges in preserving their cultural and religious identity while adapting to external influences. The Penelando community represents a unique case of cultural resilience, where tradition and modernity intersect. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a sociological perspective, this research collects data through in-depth interviews with community members and stakeholders, as well as a literature review of relevant books and journal articles. The findings indicate that the Penelando Islamic indigenous community embodies an acculturative cultural-religious identity, reflected in their adaptive strategies, such as integrating modern agricultural practices with traditional belief systems. Traditional stakeholders play a critical role in maintaining communal identity by negotiating cultural continuity and change. Their accommodative stance allows them to selectively adopt global elements while preserving core values. This study contributes to the discourse on indigenous identity preservation by highlighting the dynamic interplay between local traditions and global influences. Further research is needed to explore similar adaptive strategies among other indigenous communities facing globalization, particularly in regions experiencing rapid socio-cultural transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to observe the phenomenon of reciting shalawat in the Pekalongan Az-Zahir Assembly. Shalawat, which was previously a private domain with a worship value, has gradually changed into an activity with  a profit value. This qualitative study employs a socio-cultural approach associated with digital media. Continuing the research on the tradition of reciting shalawat in existing research, most of the existing themes only touch on the aspect of the influence of the shalawat tradition on people's behavior and also increase their love for their homeland. The commodification of shalawat in the Az-Zahir group is reviewed through three aspects: content commodification, audience commodification, and worker commodification. It can be understood that the relationship between the religiosity of commodities and the commodification of religion is complex and interdependent. Commodities are traded goods or services, while religion is a belief system that regulates human relations with God or a higher power. Although originating from different domains, both often influence and shape each other.

Abstract

This article examines the development of Islamic historiography through the framework of epistemic archaeology, drawing on Michel Foucault’s theories of discourse, power, and knowledge. Employing a critical-historical and genealogical methodology, the study integrates close textual analysis of classical Islamic sources—such as hadith, sīrah, maghāzī, and asmā’ al-rijāl—with discourse analysis to trace how historical narratives were shaped by theological, legal, and political interests. It examines the complex role of early transmitters, particularly the ṣaḥābah, in constructing the foundations of historical authority, and highlights how definitions of authenticity and legitimacy evolved amid sectarian and epistemological contestations. The research explores the transition from oral transmission to systematic historiographical writing in Arabic, followed by the Persianization of Islamic historical narratives under the Ghaznavid dynasty. Rather than treating Islamic historiography as a linear or unified tradition, this study argues that it constitutes a dynamic and heterogeneous field marked by multiple epistemic ruptures and reconfigurations. By situating these shifts within a Foucauldian analytic, the article shows how Islamic historical writing functioned not only as a record of the past but also as a mechanism for producing truth, governing memory, and regulating religious authority within diverse Islamic communities.
