Jurnal FUADUNA: Jurnal Kajian Keagamaan dan Kemasyarakatan is a peer-reviewed journal which is published by Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Bukitinggi in collaboration with Himpunan Peminat Ilmu-Ilmu Ushuluddin (HIPIUS) and publishes biannually in June and December. It focuses mainly on the related issues to Quran and Hadits, Islamic philosophy and thoughts, culture and social studies, Islamic history studies, and dakwah and communications studies. JURNAL FUADUNA: Jurnal Kajian Keagamaan dan Kemasyarakat published at first Vol. 1, No. 1, 2017 biannually in in June and December. Reviewers will review any submitted paper. Review process employs a double-blind review, which means that both the reviewer and author identities are concealed from the reviewers, and vice versa.

Abstract

This article discusses the concept of Islamization of knowledge promoted by Ismail Raji Faruqi. This concept aims to defeat secularism that blinds Muslims and brings misfortune. The spread of secularism has encouraged Muslims to make concessions to what the West offers them. Therefore, reading the Islamization of knowledge in the context of scientific integration-interconnection becomes essential to raise awareness among Muslims who are considered to glorify secular science so that people are too far from the concept of tawhid (monotheism). This research used a literature review method through several textual sources related to the topic discussed, primarily Faruqi's work entitled "Islamization of Knowledge," and secondary in the form of similar articles on the theme of Islamization of knowledge. Then, it is to consider the aims and objectives of the Islamization of knowledge, linking it with the concept of integration-interconnection, and considering the contextualization of the Islamization of knowledge in the Indonesian science. The results of this paper are as follows: Islamization of knowledge becomes an inclusive concept if we consider the existence of two disciplines. As a Muslim scientist, the realm of Islamization of knowledge must be imprinted in him to achieve the ideals of Islam. Islamization of knowledge is closely related to integration-interconnection, namely integrating sciences without legitimizing that one science with another cannot be merged. Islamization of knowledge is also a step in creating an Islamic civilization in the world of science. In the context of Indonesia, the Islamization of knowledge can be seen in the concept of science integration in several Islamic universities in Indonesia which has different concepts, but the same essence. The purpose of Faruqi's thought is to demand Muslims to be creative.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the strategic role of Da'i Nagari (local preacher) as Da'i assisting the nagari (village) government in driving rural development in Pasaman Regency, West Sumatra. Da'i Nagari is a local government-created program that rewards preachers in West Sumatra. This study aims to describe the significant role of Da'i Nagari in the development process. This research is critical since Da'i Nagari is a specific regional government initiative that only exists in West Sumatra. By providing an overview of the presence of Da'i Nagari in Pasaman Barat, this qualitative descriptive study elucidates the role of Da'i Nagari in the development process. Additionally, this study addresses academic concerns regarding the potential positive effects of the Da'i Nagari program on rural development. The results of this study are revealed by describing Da'i Nagari as an extension of the regional government in developing rural communities. The presence of Da'i Nagari assists the community in resolving various religious problems, including character building, religious information development, and social issues.

Abstract

This article examines godly nationalism using the theory of secularism. This connection is based on a shared "we-feeling" rooted in the common belief systems fostered by cooperation between the state and religious organizations (NU, Muhammadiyah, Persis). Jeremy Menchik argues that violence against Ahmadiyya should be viewed as "productive intolerance" rather than merely damaging democracy, as it is intended to protect this religious bond. The concept of godly nationalism has been criticized for neglecting religious freedom as a human right. This concept also overemphasizes macro-level data while failing to explain the local realities experienced by Ahmadiyya. The primary data for this research is Menchik's book titled "Islam and Democracy in Indonesia: Tolerance Without Liberalism,” then, it will be analyzed theoretically by borrowing Jose Casanova's secularism theory. This article found that the absence of secularism discourse throughout his work influenced his stance in understanding the nuances of religious intolerance in Indonesia. According to Menchik, Indonesia is viewed as a moderate country, but not in the form of binary opposition, as seen in the genealogy of secularism in the Western world, where religion is often positioned with certain negative prepositions.

Abstract

Despite the global shift toward contactless greetings prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, a substantial number of young people in Nigeria continue to engage in the practice of shaking hands. Previous empirical studies on COVID-19 and handshakes have primarily focused on adherence rates in different countries, with limited attention to understanding the underlying beliefs influencing adherence or non-adherence to preventive measures. This study explored the underlying beliefs that inform these socializing choices, shedding light on the socio-cultural and psychological factors affecting adherence to this age-old practice. Data were collected from twelve participants through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically using a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings indicate that participants often feel immune to COVID-19, attributing this immunity to self-administered hydroxychloroquine and asserting divine, geographic (hot temperature), and demographic (being young) protection. Many also perceive the virus as similar to malaria and not considered severe.  The implications of these findings for research and policy are discussed.

Abstract

This article discusses Tuanku Imam Bonjol's intellectual contribution to the struggle for Indonesian independence. Tuanku Imam Bonjol is an intellectual figure in the Padri movement’s practical politics who is not careless and always makes sensible and wise decisions. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. Tuanku Imam Bonjol’s struggle against the Dutch colonialists was not only to liberate Minangkabau land from Dutch colonialism but also a form of jihad to re-establish Islamic law in Minangkabau land. Tuanku Imam Bonjol’s adherence to  the Wahhabi ideology did not drive him to commit acts of violence. Tuanku Imam Bonjol still conveyed it rationally according to the context of that time. Tuanku Imam Bonjol responded wisely to the social conditions of the Minangkabau people amidst many people who did not follow Islamic law. As time passed, he realized that the tough attitude of the Padri movement, initially aimed at upholding Islamic law, had exacerbated the conflict between the Padri and the Indigenous people, making Imam Bonjol abandon the Wahhabi ideology that he had adhered to all this time. The legacy of Tuanku Imam Bonjol and the Padri movement in Minangkabau history was immense. They left traces of struggle that inspired subsequent generations to fight for independence and defend Islamic values and local culture.

Abstract

The establishment of standard law serves as a crucial framework for Muslims, particularly in mitigating confusion following the death of the Prophet Muhammad. This study examines the compilation and standardization of Islamic law during the formative years of Islam, emphasizing the contributions of the Companions, who brought diverse backgrounds and perspectives to the discourse. The analysis begins with the historical context of how Islamic law was compiled and standardized, progressing to an exploration of the characteristics of Islamic law as articulated by jurists (mujtahid). Through a comprehensive literature review, this paper aims to demonstrate the historical evolution of Islamic law, highlighting its rational, open, and flexible nature. These attributes reflect the positive implications of Islamic teachings, which are both transparent and characterized by the principle of rahmatan li al-'alamin (mercy to the worlds). Furthermore, this study elucidates the connection between the inclusive and humanistic spirit of Islam and the Islamic legal framework developed by early scholars, underscoring its rationality, flexibility, dynamism, and accessibility.

Abstract

This study examines changes in the social piety of female itinerant traders in traditional markets in the Minangkabau matrilineal cultural context in West Sumatra. Village religious traditions, common among non-mobilized women working as farmers, are compared with market religious traditions, which emerge among women working as itinerant traders. The change from the agricultural sector to the market sector influenced women's religious practices, from traditions characterized by mechanical rural norms to an organic and materialistic market orientation. This study uses holistic observation methods in two traditional markets and in-depth interviews with female itinerant traders. Findings suggest that the economic mobility of itinerant women traders creates different dynamics of social piety, with heterogeneous market interactions influencing their understanding and practice of religion. The piety formed reflects social solidarity and adaptation to changing economic conditions, with primary indicators including helping, lending and borrowing capital, almsgiving, and trade integrity. This activity shows that religion plays a role not only as a spiritual guide but also as a motivator and regulator in economic and social life. This study sheds light on how economic dynamics influence women’s religious and social lives in Minangkabau, emphasizing the necessity of understanding cultural and economic changes within a broader social context.

Abstract

The tafsir (Qur’anic commentary) is one of the essential tools for explaining and deepening the understanding of the teachings of the Qur’an within the community. Besides serving as a religious instrument, tafsir often reflects cultural richness by integrating Islamic aspects with local cultural values. This study aims to explore how the cultural identity of the Sundanese people is reflected in the Tafsir Raudhatul Irfan fi Ma’rifatil Qur’an, written by K.H. Ahmad Sanusi from Sukabumi. The research method used is descriptive-analytical with a qualitative approach. The findings of this study indicate that the cultural identity in the Tafsir Raudhatul Irfan is evident in several aspects of local wisdom, particularly in the field of language. The Sundanese language used in this tafsir is the daily language of the mufassir (commentator). Thus, the writing of this tafsir was primarily intended for the students in Islamic boarding schools and the Sundanese community who understand the language rather than for a broader audience. Furthermore, the cultural identity is also reflected in the writing system, where the mufassir utilizes the Pegon script to convey his tafsir. The Pegon script, which is a writing system that uses Arabic characters for the Sundanese, Javanese, and Madurese languages, is employed in this tafsir as a means to preserve and maintain local literary traditions while still conveying Islamic teachings.

Abstract

This study explores two primary themes: the Qawaid al-Iman fi Bayan al-Iman manuscript by Sheikh Tengku H. Muhammad bin Alim, and the narrative of Sayyidina Ali's interrogation by the Khawarij, as presented in this manuscript. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the study aims to examine these issues in depth, utilizing a philological approach to analyze the text. The research adopts a descriptive framework to detail the manuscript's characteristics, with an emphasis on the systematic steps of philological analysis, including text identification, manuscript cataloging, description, comparative study, transliteration, and translation. The findings indicate that the manuscript titled Qawaid al-Imani fi Bayan al-Iman (The Principles of Faith: An Exposition of the Pillars of Belief) was authored by Sheikh Tengku H. Muhammad bin Alim during his Islamic missionary work in Muara Jernih Village between 1970 and 1980, with the work completed five years prior to his death. The manuscript spans 127 pages and is written in Malay Arabic. In addition, the study explores the episode in which Sayyidina Ali is questioned by the Khawarij. His responses, characterized by his profound knowledge and rhetorical skill, successfully persuade the Khawarij to reconsider their stance and ultimately return to the fold of Islam.

Abstract

The conflict of Ahmadiyya Lombok has advanced significantly since the 1980s when the fatwa of MUI (the Indonesian Ulama Council) was issued. Ahmadiyya Lombok refugees who migrated to the Transito Dormitory faced discrimination and negative stigma, as well as problems acquiring their citizenship rights, including freedom of worship based on their beliefs and limited access to public services. This study aims to answer several critical concerns, including how Ahmadiyya residents have gained access to public services since taking refuge at the Mataram Transito Dormitory, the negative stigmas they have faced, and the deviant assessments they have received. This study employs a qualitative research method using in-depth interviews with the Ahmadiyya Congregation residing at the Transito Dormitory and observations of the Transito Dormitory. The findings reveal that the Ahmadiyah Congregation faced discrimination while residing at the Transito Dormitory, characterized by limited access to public services, negative stigma stemming from heretical fatwa, and perceptions of exclusivity due to their resistance to local community preferences.
