Abstract

One of the issues debated by Arab linguists and interpreters of the Quran is whether all the words in the Koran come from native Arabic, or are there uptake words from foreign languages used in the Koran. The analysis of linguists states that the absorption words in various languages can arise due to geographical location, trade relations, immigration, politics, culture, economy, industry, and others. In the context of absorption words in the Koran the scholars are divided into three opinions, namely the group of scholars who reject the absorption of words in the Koran; Second, groups who believe that there are absorption words in the Koran; and third, which takes a middle ground with a view that the word uptake in the Koran has its specificities.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the development of Islamic religious movements in the Malay traditional land of Kerinci Jambi, particularly related to the tendency of religious formalism in Islamic communities. The pattern of education, local customs and traditions, as well as religious ideology contributed to the emergence of a Muslim community that only paid attention to the formal side of religion or known as formalist Islam. This study uses an anthropological approach through interviews, observations, and documentation of Muslim communities in Kerinci Jambi. This paper finds that formalist Islam tends to be difficult to develop in Malay society exclusively from indigenous groups, and more easily accepted for inclusive societies from immigrant groups or mixing with outsiders and academics. This exclusive Malay community seeks to maintain the Islamic ideology that has been institutionalized in the structure of society that does not contradict between custom and religion since the first, namely Islam with the nuances of Sufism, based on the Shafi'i Madhhab in fiqh, and al-Ghazali Madhhab in theology. Meanwhile, inclusive societies tend to be open to accepting various Islamic identities and most of them do not hold strong traditional values.

Abstract

Disclosure about the formation and development of the Islamic empire in the archipelago, including the underdeveloped field of study. Though the history of the empire in the archipelago is very much to be discussed, both large and small that affect the form of local Islamic traditions and culture. Writing about the sultanate of the archipelago is very little, this is because of limited resources such as local texts, tambo, chronicles, saga, genealogies and so forth. Moreover, an empire in the archipelago that is not too large, will increasingly difficult to express its history and development. Therefore, the study of the Islamic Sultanate in Jambi is a rather neglected study. In fact, according to Azyumardi Azra Jambi is one of the regions in the archipelago that was first visited by Muslim traders from Arabia. The history of the empire in the archipelago is full of tension and conflict, this has made it easier for Western Imperialism to colonize the archipelago. This is not because of its enormous military strength but because of the internal weaknesses of the sultanates in the archipelago who often wage war, intrigue, and try to master each other. One by one the sultanates in the archipelago were controlled, and Western Imperialism took huge profits through the trade routes controlled by the kingdom. The sultanate who was too violent in giving resistance was threatened to be abolished by Western Imperialism.

Abstract

This article discusses the practices of deviant sexuality in the Muslim-Minangkabau community depicted in early Indonesian films in relation to the socio-cultural context in the film as well as the socio-cultural context when the film was produced. The film in question is Titian Serambut Dibelah Tujuh by Asrul Sani. In this film some of the deviant practices of sexuality depicted are homosexuality, lesbianity, and hypersexuality (through the practice of rape). Using a neo-historicalism approach, which looks at the relation of literary texts (films) to their historical space and time, the narratives in this film relate to the context of their presence in the midst of Indonesian social reality and the setting of the film itself: this film exists as a critique of moral decadence The Old Order, which celebrates sexuality in public spaces and on the other hand, also describes the background society (which is also where the writer of the scenario came from) where the practices of sexuality diverged have their own traces in the history of this society.

ABSTRACTThis study aims to identify liberalism thought among youth on social media. The liberalism influence was identified through the sharing of views and thoughts of the youth at risk on their social media account in the form of comments or writings uploaded. The study was conducted through a month of focussed observation on eleven youth at risk who were inclined towards promoting liberalism thought on the social media. The youth were selected based on the active share of their views on issues pertaining to Islam and the active status update via personal social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and page. The findings showed that three out of eleven youth uploaded an average of five to twelve statuses a day. Meanwhile, seven out of eleven youth uploaded statuses based on season and issues that occur at a time. The study also found that they have a network that helps them in terms of giving moral support or offering views that support one another and being vocal towards current issues especially the ones involving the Islamic Shariah, Shariah court and religious authority in Malaysia. The study contributes current reality for the nation’s policymaker to prepare guidelines for the use of social media among youth.

Abstract

Hamka was a contemporary Indonesian Islamic figure who was involved in many fields. He wrote hundreds of books on various topics of study, philosophy, interpretation, history, customs and culture, literature, and others. When mentioning the name Hamka, then he was an ulama, while his roles in other fields are a little blurred. One of them is a depiction of the figure of Hamka as a historian. Some researchers recognize and acknowledge it as part of a historical researcher, some even study his historical philosophy, while for others give the view that he is not a historian. There are several characteristics and types of historians themselves, including professional historians, historians of other fields, and amateur historians or so-called community historians. The purpose of this paper is to uncover the methods employed by Hamka in writing his historical-themed works by looking at the intellectual socio-historical life. Through this study, it can be concluded that Hamka is included in the class of community historians because there is no formal academic history in his study. However, the various steps he went through in the writing process and his teaching experience are proof that Hamka is a historian.

Abstract

The biggest challenge for plural democracy is how to manage the diversity of its people according to the principles of equality and justice. In this connection, it cannot be denied Indonesia as a plural state is being faced with the maturation of democracy on one side, and the challenges of managing the diversity of its people on the other side. Some of the challenges of pluralism that still occur in Indonesia include: First, there are still many overlapping regulations. Especially regarding the management of religious diversity. Secondly, law enforcers do not provide protection. Mainly related to freedom of religion or belief. Third, although Indonesian people basically live in a pluralistic reality, but in fact the foundation of tolerance of the plural Indonesian society is still relatively fragile. The problem of managing the diversity of religions or beliefs as described above, has an interconnected relationship with the difficulty of presenting the moderation of religions in Indonesia. The question is how to manage the diversity of religions and beliefs according to the principle of equality and fairness, especially for the local belief groups of the archipelago, which in political language is called the flow of trust nomenclature? How is the portrait of the state's treatment of local religious groups? And offers the concept of diversity management which is expected to contribute to reaffirming Indonesia's diversity towards Islamic moderation. Because it cannot be denied, speaking of religious moderation actually speak of religious tolerance amid diversity in high intensity.
