Abstract

Abstract This study examines the challenges and strategic responses of Islamic religious education among Muslim minority communities in Western societies by focusing on the educational thought of Taha Jabir al-Alwani. Employing a qualitative library-based research approach, the study analyzes both primary and secondary sources related to al-Alwani’s writings on Islamic education and fiqh al-aqalliyyt. The findings reveal that al-Alwani advances a contextual, transformative, and integrative educational model grounded in five core principles: orientation toward maqṣid al-sharīʿah, epistemological renewal (tajdīd), the integration of religious and modern sciences, dialogical pedagogy, and a strong emphasis on ethical formation and social responsibility. Within this framework, Islamic education is conceived not merely as a mechanism for preserving religious identity, but as a means of enabling constructive engagement within pluralistic social settings. The novelty of this study lies in its articulation of the practical relevance of al-Alwani’s educational framework for Muslim minorities in Western contexts, an area that has received limited and unsystematic attention in previous studies. Overall, al-Alwani’s educational thought offers valuable insights for the development of adaptive and future-oriented Islamic education in responding to the challenges of modernity and diversity.

Abstract

Abstract

Divorce in interfaith marriages presents distinct challenges in the enforcement of child maintenance orders, particularly when religious differences between parents affect the rights of the child after divorce. In Indonesia and Malaysia, differences in legal systems and regulations governing post-divorce child maintenance have given rise to different forms of legal innovation in the enforcement of such rulings. In Indonesia, the main challenge lies in the dualism of the judicial system, which separates religious courts from civil courts. Meanwhile, Malaysia, despite its pluralistic legal framework, faces problems mainly in cases where the child is Muslim while the father is non-Muslim. This article offers a comparative analysis of the two countries in terms of legal innovation and the enforcement of child maintenance orders following divorce in interfaith marriages, with a particular focus on the role and practice of the Bahagian Sokongan Keluarga (BSK) in Malaysia. Through a comparative approach, this study highlights both similarities and differences in legal enforcement mechanisms and provides recommendations to enhance the protection of children’s rights in post-divorce child maintenance cases. This study finds that the fulfillment of child maintenance obligations in interfaith divorce cases, especially when the child is Muslim and the father is non-Muslim, presents complex legal issues. In Indonesia, the absence of a specialized institution similar to BSK results in enforcement of child support relying heavily on litigation processes, which are often hindered by jurisdictional and administrative limitations. Meanwhile, Malaysia, through BSK, has introduced administrative innovations, including mediation mechanisms and inter-agency coordination, which have accelerated the efficiency of child support fulfillment. Therefore, this recommends the establishment of a similar institutional unit in Indonesia, the harmonization of civil and Syariah data, and the development of standarized national operating procedures (SOPs) as reform efforts to better guarantee children’s rights in interfaith marriages cases.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the phenomenon of mawdu’ (fabricated) hadith in the digital landscape as an epistemic challenge to contemporary Islamic literacy. While digital transformation has greatly expanded access to hadith sources, it has simultaneously facilitated the rapid circulation of unverified religious content that often deviates from established scholarly methodologies. Employing a qualitative approach, this research combines a systematic literature review with limited observational analysis of digital religious content. Classical and contemporary literature on mawdu’ hadith, Ulum al-Hadith, and digital Islamic literacy are systematically analyzed to construct an epistemic framework for analysis. Illustrative empirical data was obtained through observation of hadith content circulating on social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram, where hadith are often disseminated without scrutiny of their sanad, explanation of their quality, or consideration of their historical context. The research findings show that social media has become a new ecosystem in which the authority of hadith is determined more by algorithmic visibility than by scholarly verification. Low levels of digital Islamic literacy contribute significantly to the uncritical acceptance of fabricated hadith. This study confirms that comprehensive digital Islamic literacy is an important prerequisite for maintaining epistemic integrity and ensuring the responsible transmission of hadith in the digital age.

Abstract

Abstract Rapid urbanization and social heterogeneity in urban areas frequently trigger dynamics of religious identity crises among adolescents. This study aims to describe the forms of Islamic identity crisis, analyze its contributing factors, and explore the adaptation strategies employed by Muslim youths in Tarai Bangun Village, Kampar Regency. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The findings reveal that the identity crisis experienced by adolescents is not a rejection of Islamic teachings, but rather a dynamic transition from a normative, family-inherited identity toward a reflective Islamic identity constructed through exploration, negotiation, and commitment to Islamic values. This identity development evolves through three distinct stages: normative understanding (ages 12–14), social-moral expansion (ages 15–17), and reflective internalizations (ages 17–18). The primary drivers of this crisis include value discrepancies between home, school, and peer environments, exacerbated by urbanization, social media exposure, peer pressure, and a lack of supportive mentorship. This study underscores the need for comprehensive adaptation strategies that integrate Islamic digital literacy, family guidance, community support, and Islamic psychological approaches to foster an adaptive socio-religious identity amid modern challenges.

Abstract

Abstract This article examines Ṭanṭawī Jauharī's tafsīr ʻilmī of Surah ʻAbasa (80:24–32) in Al‑Jawāhir in dialogue with contemporary nutrigenomics and medical genetics. While existing scholarship focuses on thematic food surveys, ethics, or broad methodological exegesis, integration between Qur’anic food discourse and biomedical science remains limited—even as diet–gene interactions, metabolic dysregulation, inflammation, and long-term biological risk shape health challenges. This study's novelty lies in showing how Jauharī’s reflections on food diversity, proportion, and moderation serve as a contextual bridge to modern nutrition science, rather than claiming he formulated modern theories. Employing qualitative library research with a contextual-hermeneutic approach, this study synthesizes textual analysis of Surah ʻAbasa 24–32 and Al‑Jawāhir, Jauharī’s historical scientific reformism, and current nutrigenomics literature. Findings show that Jauharī’s emphasis on proportional composition, differentiated food qualities, and moderation offers an essential exegetical resource for current discussions of nutritional quality, metabolic health, and intergenerational biological responsibility.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Islamic Wealth Management (IWM) in supporting Micro and Small Enterprise (MSE) sustainability in Madura, Indonesia. Using an exploratory approach that combines conceptual analysis and contextual examination, the research examines how five IWM aspects (wealth creation, accumulation, protection, purification, and distribution) can be implemented through existing Islamic financial infrastructure. The study collected data through content analysis of academic literature and documentation from Islamic financial institutions operating in Madura. Findings reveal that extensive Islamic financial infrastructure across four regencies in Madura, including Islamic commercial banks, Islamic rural banks, and Islamic microfinance institutions, provides comprehensive products aligned with each IWM aspect. These five aspects form an integrated cycle, creating a sharia-based circular economy where wealth distribution from established MSEs becomes wealth creation for emerging enterprises. This interconnection potentially supports MSE sustainability across economic (profitability and resilience), social (employment and community cohesion), and spiritual (religious achievement and business blessings) dimensions. The study contributes to IWM literature by demonstrating the importance of infrastructure density and local context in implementation effectiveness. Despite limitations as an exploratory study based on secondary data, findings suggest Madura's Islamic financial infrastructure provides a strong foundation for IWM implementation as an alternative strategy for MSE sustainability.

Abstract

Abstract This study investigates how reformism and revivalism interact dialectically within Nahdlatul Ulama’s (NU) contemporary intellectual movement. Background: Responses to modernization, religious pluralism, and transnational Islamic movements have driven NU to develop new paradigms like Islam Nusantara and Fiqih Peradaban. However, existing scholarship predominantly views NU through a binary lens as either traditionalist or moderate-progressive, neglecting its internal epistemological dynamics. The research focuses on the discursive construction of Islam Nusantara and Fiqih Peradaban, examining how NU reconciles classical authority with contemporary social transformation. Employing a qualitative, library-based approach using discourse analysis, the study analyzes primary organizational documents, including Baḥtsul Masā'il decisions and Munas Alim Ulama proceedings, alongside secondary academic literature. Findings reveal that reformism and revivalism function as mutually reinforcing epistemological frameworks rather than opposing ideologies. While Islam Nusantara contextualizes Islamic teachings locally, Fiqih Peradaban expands this framework toward global, civilizational concerns. Ultimately, NU formulates a model of "tradition-based reformism" that reconstructs classical Islamic authority to drive contextual renewal within modern, pluralistic societies. Penelitian ini, menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif berbasis studi kepustakaan dengan analisis diskursus, menganalisis dokumen resmi organisasi seperti keputusan Baḥtsul Masa'il and Munas Alim Ulama that are triangulated with literature academics.
