Abstract

This paper studies merge as a syntactic process of combining syntactic objects and argues that this combining process is always associated with a syntactic operation. This syntactic operation always follows an action operated by the syntactic objects on the basis of their grammatical properties. This action creates semantic space in which the derivation of a sentence takes place. This space has existence and it can be drawn from the structure of the sentence. There are different arguments and explanations about number of working space in which derivation of sentences takes place. But this paper argues that the derivation of a sentence takes place in the semantic space of this sentence itself and following this fact this paper argues that each sentence has specific semantic space. It means there is more than one semantic space seen in the derivation of different sentences. This paper follows the theoretical assumption of minimalist program given by Hornstein; 2017, Chomsky; 1995. This paper applies this theory in analysis of syntactic structure of an Indian language like Odia.

Abstract

This study focuses on an experimental study design to investigate the effect of reading aloud strategy on students' comprehension when reading narrative texts. Reading aloud is an activity to read something important in reading, such as helping students read language items better and helping them practice word stress, intonation, and pronunciation. 60 SMA Swasta Melati Binjai tenth graders in the 2022/2023 school year were selected as the subjects of the study. Besides, the read test tool is analyzed as valid by looking at the t-counted coefficient (4.635) greater than the t-table factor (1.70113) and it is also analyzed as reliable by looking at the confidence factor (0.763) higher than the panel coefficient (0.3061); this is also shown by t-test analysis that the coefficient is high and significant by considering that the countable coefficient (3.219) is larger than the testable coefficient (1.70113). This means that there is an effect of reading aloud strategy on a student's ability to understand the text. Therefore, the research hypothesis is accepted.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the knowledge of Brunei Malay dialect vocabulary among youths and to discuss the challenges as well as steps in enhancing the knowledge of this dialect. Brunei Malay dialect or known as ‘Cakap Barunai’ is a dialect widely used among Bruneians, and considered as the mother tongue and the daily communication language among the locals. According to studies, the Ethno Vitality Rate of Brunei Malay dialect was high and considered safe; however, recent trends have shown decreasing usage of Brunei Malay especially among the Bruneian youths (15-40 years old). There are insufficient studies to ascertain whether this trend affects the youths’ Brunei Malay vocabulary knowledge. This study adapted the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS) test on the Brunei Malay vocabulary and a set of survey containing Likert scale and open-ended questions to collect the research data distributed among 102 respondents. Based on the data, the knowledge of Brunei Malay dialect was considered low as only 20.9% received responses that indicated the correct vocabulary’s meaning. The survey showed that influences from different languages and social media, and lack of exposure and intergenerational transfer were the main causes of this issue. Suggestions to preserve this dialect included education, campaigns, social media and family involvement.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the lexical density of six children’s stories in order to assess the richness and complexity of language usage in these texts. The study examined the selected stories from a children’s storybook using a qualitative content analysis technique to identify the fraction of content words, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, that contribute to the total lexical density. To measure the lexical density of the storybooks, the analytical approaches were inspired by Ure (1971) and Halliday (1985). The findings demonstrated varying degrees of lexical density in children's storybooks, providing insights into the variable vocabulary and linguistic complexity used in these writings.
