Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out theprogress in students’ writing achievement after they were taught by using blogs, and to find out the significant difference in students’ writing achievement between the students who were taught by using blogs and those who were not. A quasi-experimental method was used in this study. The population of the study was all the students in Faculty of Economic at Indo Global Mandiri University in the academic year 2014/2015. The sample consisted of 40 students where 20 students for experimental group and 20 students for control group, and was selected by using purposive sampling. In order to get the data, a test was used. The data was obtained in the form of writing test. The test was given twice, to the experimental and control groups, as pre-test and post-test. The result of the test was analyzed by using t-test through SPSS program. The finding showed that (1) There were some progresses in students’ writing due to the use of blog during the teaching and learning activities, and (2) There was a significant difference between the students who were taught by using blogs and those who were not. Key Words: Improving, Writing Ability, Blogs

Abstract

AbstractIt is universally believed that learning a foreign language has its own difficulties. This paper discusses some problems which are faced by English as a Foreign Language students in learning English. Those problems can come from the students themselves and it can also come from their environment that have strong influence their success in learning a foreign language, in this case English. Moreover, how students’ local language influence them in learning English and how to overcome such an obstruction are also discussed here.Keyword : local languages, English, and foreign language learning AbstrakSecara universal diyakini bahwa mempelajari bahasa asing memiliki kesulitan tersendiri. Makalah ini membahas beberapa masalah yang dihadapi oleh Inggris sebagai siswa Bahasa Asing dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui hasil kebutuhan modul menurut Mahasiswa dan Dosen, (2) merancang modul  berdasarkan  analisis kebutuhan Mahasiswa dan Dosen, (3) menghasilkan modul yang praktis, dan (4) mengetahui efek potensial modul terhadap hasil belajar. Penelitian merupakan penelitian dan pengembangan (Research & Development). Validasi modul dilakukan melalui uji validasi ahli dan uji satu kelas. Validasi  dilakukan dari segi materi, penyajian, kebahasaan, dan kegrafikaan. Data dalam uji tes untuk melihat keefektifan diperoleh melalui tes pengetahuan bahasa Indonesia dan tes unjuk kerja (menulis esai dan berbicara untuk presentasi).  Hasil tes pengetahuan bahasa Indonesia mengalami peningkatan rata-rata dari 66,38 menjadi 81,19 (selisih 14,81). Pada tes menulis esai menunjukkan  rata-rata 67,54 menjadi 78,41 (selisih 10,87), sedangkan  pada tes berbicara untuk presentasi dari rata-rata 67,11 menjadi 81,3 (selisih 14,19). Dengan demikian, modul hasil pengembangan ini memberikan efek potensial dalam pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the types of error based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy (Dulay, Burt, and Krashen, 1982) that found at ELT student’s speaking and analyzing some factors influencing their errors. The subject of this research was the sixth semester students of English Education from Indo Global Mandiri University who already taken speaking 3 and structure 4 courses. Qualitative study was used as a method to obtain the data. The data was taken from final exam video of speaking 3 course. The researcher analyzed the data following the Error Analysis (EA) procedures which involves transcribing, coding, classifying error, also explaining the errors and their factors. The result shows that the most dominant error were omission (55,50%), followed by addition (22,49%), misformation (18,66%), and misordering (3,35%). The current research investigated the factor of errors based on their source were intralingual and interlingual interference. Meanwhile, intralingual was considered as the major cause of the students’ errors. In conclution, the students still have a problem in terms of grammatical aspect of their speaking. It is suggested that the students should pay more attention to the grammatical aspect and improve their speaking skills.

Abstract

In Indonesia, students learn English as Foreign Language. It is not easy to do, but the use of English is very important to secure life. Students need English to search information, communicate and learn. There are many problems for teachers to teach English in the classroom, Such as low motivation, lazy to practice and a little time to teach.  Therefore, teachers need strategies to motivate and encourage students to learn, read and practice English. In order to help students to speak, a method can be used. Role Playing is a suitable method to develop students to talk. Abstract

ABSTRACTStudents’ perception of teachers’ bilingual language use was based on bilingual approach in English language learning in which the students’ first language ( L1 ) is combined with the target language ( L2 ) being studied to be a language instruction used by the teacher to conduct an English classroom.  The purpose of this research was to find out the students’ perception toward the use of Bilingual language they are English and Indonesian by the teacher in EFL classroom. This research was a qualitative approach with the forty students as the sample. In collecting the data, questionnaire was used. The data was analyzed through Likert Scale in order to find out students’ perception of teachers’ bilingual language use in EFL classroom. Based on the result of data analysis and interpretation of the data gained from questionnaire, it indicates that students show their positive perceptions to the use of bilingual language done by the teacher as language instruction in their English classroom. Finally, the result of the research would give a contribution to the improvement of the classroom language instruction used by the teacher in an English language learning classroom particularly for teaching the students who were learning English as a foreign language ( EFL ).Keyword : Bilingual, Students’ Perception, language use, EFL classroomABSTRAKPersepsi siswa tentang penggunaan dua bahasa oleh guru didasarkan pada pendekatan bilingual dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di mana bahasa pertama siswa ( L1 ) dikombinasikan dengan bahasa target (L2) yang dipelajari menjadi pengajaran bahasa yang digunakan oleh guru untuk melaksanakan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di kelas. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan dua bahasa yaitu bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Indonesia oleh guru di kelas EFL. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan empat puluh siswa sebagai sampel. Dalam mengumpulkan data, kuesioner digunakan. Data dianalisis melalui Skala Likert untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan dua bahasa oleh guru di kelas EFL. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data dan interpretasi data yang diperoleh dari kuesioner, hal ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa memiliki persepsi positif  terhadap penggunaan dua bahasa yang dilakukan oleh guru sebagai bahasa pengantar di kelas bahasa Inggris.. Pada akhirnya, hasil penelitian diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi pada peningkatan pengajaran bahasa Inggris di kelas yang digunakan oleh guru di kelas pembelajaran bahasa Inggris terutama untuk mengajar siswa yang belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing ( EFL ).Kata kunci : Dua bahasa, Persepsi Siswa, penggunaan bahasa, kelas EFL

Abstract

Negotiation of meaning is generally defined as conversational modifications or adjustments that take place in communicative interactions when learners and their interlocutors experience difficulty in understanding messages. In a conversation, a speaker may employ a communication strategy to communicate effectively using negotiation of meaning. There is a need to examine the impact of negotiation for meaning in classroom interaction and the extent to which negotiation of meaning contribute to L2 learning. This paper reports on a critical review of research conducted on negotiation of meaning strategies used by second language learners in EFL/ESL contexts. Thispaper specifically discusses the ways in which learners of English employ negotiation of meaning strategies in conversation in the studies reviewed. This paper focuses on the functions of negotiation of meaning strategies. Abstract

AbstractToday, we live in a dynamic digital world where both educators and students are challenged with the ever changing technological developments. Thus, this research was aimed at investigating the development of students’ writing and digital literacy through weblog. The sample of the study was 20 students of the fourth semester English study program of Tridinanti University Palembang. The researchers used purposive sampling as the way of choosing the sample because the sample is taught by the researchers in writing class. The researchers applied quasi-experimental design in term of pretest-posttest non equivalent group design. Moreover, there are three types of data collection used by the researchers; they are test, questionnaire and observation. After the study, it was found out that the results of posttest between experiment and control group show significant difference with t value of posttest was 11.739, sig 0.000 while t value of gain score was 7.671, sig 0.000. Accordingly, all aspects of writing both posttest and gain score show significant differences. Furthermore, it was also found that the developments of digital literacy components from the highest to the lowest are as follows: 1) information sources (36%), 2) digital competencies (23%), 3) attitude and perspective (24%), and 4) basic ICT skill (17%). The results indicate that the concept of digital library in this study encouraged students’ knowledge about information sources. The highest progress made by the students from the observation results was in students’ basic ICT skill then followed by digital competencies because the number of the students who were in excellent category was almost or closely above 50% for these two components. Meanwhile, though attitude and perspective and information sources also increased still they were not as high as other two components as there was only small number of the students who were in excellent category. The results reveal that weblog is effective to develop students’ writing and digital literacy. In addition, students showed positive views because using blog was very interesting and it provided more cooperation between lecturer and students.Keywords : weblog; ICT; writing literacy; digital literacy.AbstrakSaat ini, kita hidup di dunia digital yang dinamis di mana dosen dan masiswa ditantang dengan perkembangan teknologi yang terus berubah. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki perkembangan tulisan mahasiswa dan literasi digital melalui weblog. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 20 mahasiswa dari program studi bahasa Inggris semester empat Universitas Tridinanti Palembang. Para peneliti menggunakan purposive sampling sebagai cara memilih sampel karena sampel diajarkan oleh para peneliti di kelas menulis. Para peneliti menerapkan desain quasi-eksperimental dalam hal desain kelompok non-setara pretest-posttest. Selain itu, ada tiga jenis pengumpulan data yang digunakan oleh para peneliti; mereka adalah tes, kuesioner dan observasi. Setelah penelitian, ditemukan bahwa hasil posttest antara eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol menunjukkan perbedaan yang signifikan dengan nilai t postes adalah 11,739, sig 0,000 sedangkan t nilai skor gain adalah 7,671, sig 0,000. Dengan demikian, semua aspek penulisan posttest dan gain score menunjukkan perbedaan yang signifikan. Selain itu, juga ditemukan bahwa perkembangan komponen literasi digital dari yang tertinggi ke yang terendah adalah sebagai berikut: 1) sumber informasi (36%), 2) kompetensi digital (23%), 3) sikap dan perspektif (24% , dan 4) keterampilan dasar TIK (17%). Hasil menunjukkan bahwa konsep perpustakaan digital dalam penelitian ini mendorong pengetahuan mahasiswa tentang sumber informasi. Kemajuan tertinggi yang dibuat oleh mahasiswa dari hasil pengamatan adalah dalam keterampilan TIK dasar mahasiswa kemudian diikuti oleh kompetensi digital karena jumlah siswa yang berada dalam kategori sangat baik hampir atau hampir di atas 50% untuk dua komponen ini. Sementara itu, meskipun sikap dan perspektif dan sumber-sumber informasi juga meningkat, namun tidak setinggi dua komponen lainnya karena hanya ada sedikit mahasiswa yang berada dalam kategori sangat baik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa weblog efektif untuk mengembangkan tulisan dan literasi digital mahasiswa. Selain itu, mahasiswa menunjukkan pandangan positif karena menggunakan blog sangat menarik dan memberikan lebih banyak kerja sama antara dosen dan mahasiswa.Kata kunci : weblog: TIK, literasi tulisan; literasi digital

Abstract

In this globalization era, English is very prominent for many people all over the world starts from students in elementary school till students in university level. The students are expected to master English language both in oral and written communication. If the students are able to master English, they can use it to interact and socialize with people who are not only from Indonesia but also from other countries. Therefore, to see whether or not the students succeed inmastering English, the test must be administered. This articleaims to discuss miscellaneous of tests which can be used in teaching and learning environment. Abstract

AbstractEnglish can be due to demand of Indonesian in the field of business, technology, education, and research.  The implementation of ESP has revealed some factors, such as students, teachers, and ESP materials that have significant influences on the quality of teaching and learning ESP. These factors require serious attention from stakeholders and ESP practitioners to improve the quality of ESP instruction. The government language policy might emphasize the curricula of formal schools and teachers training for ESP instruction. The quality of teacher of ESP is high contributing to accommodate the teaching and learning ESP course. Besides that, the materials of ESP should be formulated by practitioners of ESP who had knowledge of ESP instruction and the aim of ESP might concern on the improvements in students' proficiency in English. Thus, the students are being better in academic and professional in the work domain.   Keywords : Implementation, ESP instruction, the students, the teachers, the material development  AbstrakBahasa Inggris dapat disebabkan oleh permintaan bahasa Indonesia di bidang bisnis, teknologi, pendidikan, dan penelitian. Pelaksanaan ESP telah mengungkapkan beberapa faktor, seperti siswa, guru, dan materi ESP yang memiliki pengaruh signifikan terhadap kualitas pembelajaran dan pembelajaran ESP. Faktor-faktor ini memerlukan perhatian serius dari para pemangku kepentingan dan praktisi ESP untuk meningkatkan kualitas instruksi ESP. Kebijakan bahasa pemerintah mungkin menekankan kurikulum sekolah formal dan pelatihan guru untuk instruksi ESP. Kualitas guru ESP berkontribusi tinggi untuk mengakomodasi pengajaran dan pembelajaran mata pelajaran ESP. Selain itu, materi ESP harus dirumuskan oleh praktisi ESP yang memiliki pengetahuan tentang instruksi ESP dan tujuan dari ESP mungkin berkaitan dengan peningkatan kemampuan siswa dalam bahasa Inggris.
