Abstract

Studies on communication ethics grounded in Madurese local wisdom, particularly the value of tengka as a normative guide for honor and respect in social interaction, remain relatively limited, even though this phenomenon significantly affects the continuity of cultural identity and communication patterns amid globalization. This study aimed to analyze tengka as the ethical foundation of communication within Madurese society and to examine shifts in the use of the Madurese language, especially its speech levels, under the influence of globalization. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, involving members of the Madurese linguistic community selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, cultural observation, and literature review, and were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of meaning and communicative practices associated with tengka. The findings show that the levels of the Madurese language (very refined, refined, and coarse) function as a social mechanism for expressing respect, maintaining harmony, and upholding the value of tengka. However, the dominance of the Indonesian language in public spaces and rapid social change have weakened younger generations’ understanding of speech levels and the value of tengka. These findings reinforce cross-cultural communication ethics theory that emphasizes the importance of local norms in maintaining social relations and affirm that tengka plays a central role in shaping communication ethics in Madurese society, despite facing the challenges of modernization. The study’s implications include strengthening the literature on communication ethics rooted in local culture and providing recommendations for local governments, educational institutions, and cultural communities to enhance the preservation of the Madurese language and the value of tengka through cultural education and language revitalization programs, while also opening avenues for further research on the adaptation of tengka in digital contexts and among younger generations.

Abstract

Social anxiety is one of the mental health problems frequently experienced by university students and affects both academic processes and social life on campus, particularly when it intersects with a tendency toward overthinking and experiences of impostor syndrome. This study aimed to analyze the role of overthinking in social anxiety among students experiencing impostor syndrome. The research involved 385 students aged 18–25 years (135 male and 250 female), who were first screened using the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) to ensure that participants indeed experienced impostor syndrome. Overthinking was measured using the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), while social anxiety was measured using the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A). A quantitative approach with simple linear regression analysis was employed. The results showed a significant role of overthinking in social anxiety, with R = 0.531, R² = 0.282, F = 150.484, and p = 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that the higher the level of overthinking, the higher the social anxiety among students experiencing impostor syndrome, with a contribution of 28.2%. These findings underscore the importance of paying attention to overthinking as a psychological factor contributing to increased social anxiety in students with impostor syndrome and indicate the need for psychological interventions focused on managing ruminative thinking patterns to support students’ mental health and academic functioning.

Abstract

Although contextual learning (Contextual Teaching and Learning/CTL) has been widely discussed in previous research, studies that specifically examine its implementation in teaching the topic of making and implementing rules and its reinforcement of discipline and responsibility among elementary school students remain limited. This study aimed to describe the implementation of contextual learning in the topic of making and implementing rules and to analyze its influence on students’ understanding of the function of rules and the development of discipline and responsibility among fourth-grade elementary school students. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, involving purposively selected fourth-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observation, group discussions, analysis of students’ worksheets (Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik, LKPD), and documentation of learning activities, and were then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The findings show that the implementation of contextual learning through activities such as watching videos, role-playing, analyzing illustrations, engaging in group discussions, and completing the LKPD “Aturan Kelas Kami” was effective in increasing student engagement, deepening their understanding of the purposes and functions of rules, and strengthening discipline and responsibility in school life. These findings contribute to the development of the contextual learning concept and broaden understanding of character education practices in elementary schools, while also underscoring the importance of learning approaches that connect instructional content with students’ real-life experiences in shaping positive character. The implications of this study include theoretical contributions to enriching CTL scholarship and practical implications for elementary school teachers in designing meaningful learning that is oriented toward strengthening students’ character.

Abstract

Differences in environmental conditions between wetland and dryland areas are presumed to affect the morphological characteristics of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) in Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) Regency, South Sumatra, in both vegetative and generative growth, while in-depth studies on the morphology of fruits, stems, and leaves across these two land types remain limited. This study aimed to describe the morphological differences of oil palm grown on wetland and dryland sites and to develop the findings into a contextual educational leaflet as a learning medium. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through field observations in Airwall Village and Markisa Village, Lubuk Batang Subdistrict, OKU, with purposive sampling of productive and healthy oil palm plants. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed descriptively. The results show that oil palm grown on wetland areas has larger fruits with bright orange coloration, taller and more slender stems, and dense dark green leaves as a consequence of relatively optimal water and nutrient availability; conversely, oil palm on dryland exhibits smaller and duller fruits, shorter stems, and yellowish-green leaves that reflect drought stress and nutrient deficiency. These morphological findings were then packaged in the form of a contextual educational leaflet that visually compares plant characteristics in the two land types as an engaging, practical, and environmentally based biology learning medium. The study concludes that environmental conditions have a marked influence on oil palm morphology and that the findings have the potential to be utilized as innovative teaching materials in contextual biology learning in schools.

Abstract

Reading comprehension has been extensively examined in elementary education research; however, studies that specifically explore the reading comprehension processes of third-grade students in madrasah ibtidaiyah using a qualitative approach remain limited. This study aimed to describe the reading comprehension skills of third-grade students at MI Padangsidimpuan Angkola Julu, identify variations in their proficiency levels, and uncover the obstacles they experience in understanding texts. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, involving 21 third-grade students, of whom 8 were selected as focal subjects for in-depth analysis through purposive sampling. Data were collected using reading comprehension tests, semi-structured interviews, and observation, and were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate a range of reading comprehension ability from very good to low, with major difficulties observed in identifying main ideas, drawing conclusions, and articulating the moral message of the text. These results reinforce the understanding that reading comprehension is a complex and contextual cognitive process and underscore the importance of process-oriented reading instruction in madrasah ibtidaiyah to support students in developing more optimal text comprehension skills.

Abstract

The rapid development of contemporary society requires educational institutions, including madrasah, to continuously adapt and innovate, thereby necessitating change management grounded in Islamic values and responsive to contemporary challenges. Although transformational leadership and change management have been widely studied, specific understanding of the characteristics of transformative Islamic education change management in the madrasah context remains limited. This study aimed to identify and analyze the key characteristics of transformative Islamic education change management implemented at MA Negeri 1 Nganjuk. Employing a qualitative approach with a phenomenological case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with the principal, teachers, staff, and the madrasah committee, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings show that the main characteristics of change management at MA Negeri 1 Nganjuk include a strong vision grounded in Islamic values, inspirational and development-oriented leadership by the principal, a collaborative and adaptive organizational culture, and curriculum and instructional innovation strategies that are responsive to contemporary demands. These findings contribute to the development of change management theory in the context of Islamic education and enrich the literature on best practices in madrasah settings. The study concludes that synergy between transformational leadership, a strong organizational culture, and continuous innovation is essential to realizing transformative Islamic education, and it offers practical implications for madrasah managers in designing effective and contextually relevant change strategies, as well as opening avenues for further research on the enabling and constraining factors in implementing transformative change across diverse Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

Limited provision of clean water in rural areas continues to face various geographical, technical, and institutional constraints, including in Nagari Gunuang Malintang, particularly Jorong Batu Balah. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of clean water provision by the Nagari Gunuang Malintang government in meeting community needs and to identify the factors that influence the effectiveness of its implementation. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document study. Research informants included the Wali Nagari, nagari government officials, clean water supply program implementers, relevant experts, and beneficiary communities in Jorong Batu Balah. The findings show that the clean water supply program has reached 270 out of 281 households; however, service effectiveness remains low due to a system that is unable to meet demand during peak hours, weak water pressure in higher elevation areas, and unstable flows that reduce community satisfaction and disrupt residents’ daily activities. Program effectiveness has not been optimal because of limited infrastructure capacity, the absence of water quality testing in accordance with health standards, budget constraints, and geographical as well as system maintenance challenges. The study concludes that effective and sustainable clean water provision in Nagari Gunuang Malintang requires strengthening technical and institutional aspects and cross-sector collaboration so that clean water services can meet community needs more equitably and reliably.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of instructional media from traditional to digital methods as an important phenomenon in education in line with the increasing use of technology in learning processes. It aims to analyze the shift from traditional to digital learning media and to evaluate its impact on student engagement and learning outcomes at the lower secondary school level. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory case study design at a junior high school in Medan, involving 50 students and 15 teachers selected through purposive sampling. Quantitative data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed through linear regression, while qualitative data were obtained via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that 85% of students were more engaged in digital learning than in traditional learning, with an average test score increase of 25%, and 80% of students reported being more motivated to learn through the use of digital media. However, approximately 15% of students experienced difficulties in accessing the internet, which negatively affected their motivation and learning engagement. These results suggest that although digital media make a positive contribution to student learning outcomes, the success of their implementation is strongly influenced by the availability and quality of supporting infrastructure. The study underscores the importance of a balanced integration between traditional and digital learning media to enhance instructional effectiveness in the digital era.

Abstract

Although modern Islamic education has attracted considerable scholarly attention, studies that specifically synthesize the educational thought of Al-Ghazali and Fazlur Rahman to formulate a holistic and contextual model of Islamic education remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the concept of Islamic education according to Al-Ghazali, examine Fazlur Rahman’s ideas on contemporary Islamic education, and synthesize both perspectives as a basis for reconstructing modern Islamic education. The research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical and comparative design. Data were drawn from 50 documents in the form of classical texts, books, journal articles, and relevant scholarly works selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using document analysis and examined thematically through stages of coding, categorization, comparison, and conceptual synthesis. The findings indicate that Al-Ghazali emphasizes educational goals oriented toward the formation of insan kamil through the integration of intellect, heart, and action, whereas Fazlur Rahman stresses adaptive, contextual, and integrative education through the development of critical thinking skills and contextual understanding of religious texts. The synthesis of these two strands of thought produces a model of modern Islamic education that underscores a balance between spiritual character formation, mastery of knowledge, and adaptive capacity in responding to contemporary social challenges. These findings contribute to the development of modern Islamic educational theory by enriching an integrative framework that bridges classical tradition and neo-modernist thought, and affirm the importance of integrating spiritual, moral, and intellectual values into curricula and learning strategies that are holistic, contextual, and character-oriented. The study also opens up opportunities for further empirical research to examine the implementation of this modern Islamic education model in educational practice.

Abstract

Although the concepts of tarbiyah, ta‘lim, and ta’dib have been widely discussed in Islamic education studies, research that specifically examines Islamic Religious Education teachers’ understanding of these three concepts and their implications for classroom instructional practice remains relatively limited. This study aimed to explore Islamic Religious Education teachers’ understanding of the terms tarbiyah, ta‘lim, and ta’dib and how this understanding is manifested in their teaching practice. The study employed a qualitative approach with a field study design involving ten Islamic Religious Education teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, and were then analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that Islamic Religious Education classroom practice remains dominated by a ta‘lim-oriented approach that focuses on content delivery and cognitive achievement, whereas the concept of tarbiyah is more often understood implicitly as the cultivation of religious attitudes and habits, and ta’dib tends to be reduced to general etiquette or politeness. These results reveal a gap between the normative concepts of Islamic education and pedagogical practice in formal schools and provide an empirical contribution to the development of contemporary Islamic education studies. The study concludes by underscoring the importance of integrating tarbiyah, ta‘lim, and ta’dib holistically within Islamic Religious Education instruction and recommends strengthening teachers’ conceptual competence through continuous professional development programs to improve instructional quality and the formation of adab and student character.
