Abstract

This systematic literature review critically examines the equity and inclusivity implications of exit exams in higher education, synthesizing evidence from 33 studies published between 1994 and 2024. While exit exams aim to standardize academic accountability and ensure graduate competency, their implementation often exacerbates disparities among marginalized student populations, including racial and ethnic minorities, low-income students, and individuals with disabilities. The review employs the PRISMA framework to analyze qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies, revealing that high-stakes exit exams frequently induce stress, narrow curricular focus, and disproportionately hinder underrepresented groups. Key findings highlight systemic inequities in exam design, accessibility, and washback effects on pedagogy, with marginalized students facing heightened barriers to success. The study identifies divergent outcomes across demographic groups, underscoring the tension between academic rigor and equitable assessment practices. Thematic analysis emphasizes the need for policy reforms, such as culturally responsive exam design, alternative assessment models, and institutional support mechanisms to mitigate adverse impacts. Recommendations include integrating formative assessments, adaptive testing, and holistic evaluation frameworks to balance accountability with inclusivity. This review contributes to the discourse on educational equity by advocating for systemic changes in exit exam policies and urging stakeholders to prioritize accessibility and fairness. By addressing these challenges, higher education institutions can foster inclusive environments that align assessment practices with the diverse needs of all students, ultimately promoting equitable academic and professional outcomes.

Abstract

This research aims to develop and evaluate the "BUDISAH" (Culture and History of the Migration of Prophet Muhammad SAW) website based on Google Sites as a learning media for Islamic Religious Education (PAI) for fourth-grade elementary school students. The research method used is Design and Development (D&D) with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The development process involves analyzing students' needs, designing a user-friendly interface, and integrating multimedia elements such as text, images, animated videos, and interactive quizzes. Implementation was conducted at Gunungsari Elementary School involving 16 fourth-grade students. Evaluation results indicate that this website received positive feedback from content expert validators, media experts, and students. The "BUDISAH" website is considered effective in enhancing students' understanding of the material on the migration of Prophet Muhammad SAW to Medina and in increasing students' interest in learning. However, there are some technical constraints, such as limited supporting devices, that affect the implementation. Overall, this website is deemed suitable for use as an innovative learning media at the elementary school level.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the need for innovation in PAI learning to increase student activeness and understanding, especially on the material “Avoiding Gibah and Carrying out Tabayun.” The lecture method which is still dominant often causes boredom, so a more interactive approach is needed. This study aims to analyze the content of grade 7 PAI learning materials, examine the concept of the talking stick method, and evaluate its application in the material using a qualitative approach through a case study method conducted in class 7H SMP 1 Kudus. Data were collected through observation, interviews with PAI teachers and students, and documentation of teaching materials. The results showed that the teaching materials used were in accordance with the curriculum standards, although the learning outcomes were not explicitly stated so that teachers needed to adjust them with additional references. The application of the talking stick method proved effective in increasing students' active participation, critical thinking skills, and understanding of the concepts of gibah and tabayun. However, there were obstacles in time management and equal distribution of speaking opportunities. In addition, this research contributes to the development of PAI learning methods that are more innovative and relevant to students' learning styles and needs. With the modification of this method, it can be an effective alternative in shaping students' characters to be wiser in communicating and applying the principle of tabayun in daily life.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the low quality of fiqh instruction in several madrasahs, which affects students’ comprehension and active participation in the learning process. Yet, fiqh as a subject plays a strategic role in shaping students’ religious character, understanding of Islamic law, and social behavior. The aim of this research is to identify the strategies used by teachers to improve the quality of fiqh instruction at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) 1 Kota Bogor. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving fiqh teachers of grades XI and XII. The findings reveal that teachers implement varied instructional strategies, such as Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL), which links lesson content with students’ real-life experiences, and Problem Based Learning (PBL), which stimulates critical thinking and collaboration. Additionally, the use of digital, visual, and environmental-based learning media has proven effective in enhancing conceptual understanding and student engagement in class. The main conclusion of this study is that contextual, interactive, and innovative teaching strategies can holistically improve the quality of fiqh instruction across cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. The implications of this research underscore the importance of continuous professional development for teachers and institutional support to ensure the consistent implementation of innovative instructional strategies, thereby enhancing the overall quality of Islamic education in madrasah.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the level of self-authenticity and role balance among students in coping with academic demands and the dynamics of the digital era. Using a quantitative approach with a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 92 students of the Islamic Education (PAI) Study Program, class of 2022, at IAIN Palangka Raya through the Authenticity Scale questionnaire and a role balance scale, then analyzed descriptively. The results show an average self-authenticity score of 4.91 (SD = 0.93) and a role balance score of 4.52 (SD = 1.12) on a 1–7 scale, with the majority of respondents falling within the moderate to high category. However, around 15% of students showed low scores in role balance, indicating vulnerability to identity crises due to social pressure and the influence of digital media. These findings highlight the need to strengthen digital literacy, limit the consumption of content that promotes social comparison, and internalize civic values and self-reflection to reinforce students’ personal identity. The implication is that higher education institutions need to design interventions that support psychological well-being, foster intrinsic motivation, and promote sustainable academic achievement amid the challenges of the digital era.

Abstract

The issue of low student engagement and understanding in Aqidah Akhlak learning at MTs Negeri 11 Jombang is attributed to unvaried and unengaging teaching methods. This study aims to develop an innovation-based interactive learning module to enhance eighth-grade students’ conceptual understanding of Aqidah Akhlak. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE development model, consisting of the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research subjects were 30 eighth-grade students. Validation results indicate that the developed module is highly feasible, with a material expert score of 92.5% and a media expert score of 88.6%. Effectiveness testing showed a significant improvement between the pre-test (average score of 63.07) and post-test (average score of 93.00), with a t-test significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference after the use of the module. The average student response questionnaire score reached 96.33%, reflecting a highly positive reception of the module. In conclusion, this interactive module is effective in improving students’ understanding of Aqidah Akhlak concepts. The implications of this study suggest that the development of interactive learning media can serve as an innovative and contextual strategy in Islamic religious education to strengthen students’ comprehensive conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Exit examinations in higher education serve as critical assessments to evaluate students’ readiness for professional practice upon graduation. This study systematically reviews how exit exams are designed, administered, and followed up with feedback and remediation, aiming to identify best practices and areas needing improvement. Using the PRISMA methodology, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across databases including PubMed, JSTOR, and Google Scholar. Out of numerous articles screened, 22 studies were selected, covering disciplines such as medicine, pharmacy, aviation, and engineering. The analysis revealed that exit exams are most effective when aligned with curricular content and developed in collaboration with field experts. Key themes emerged around equitable exam administration, emphasizing accessibility for students with disabilities and diverse backgrounds. Post-exam processes such as timely and constructive feedback were found to be essential for student growth, while remediation efforts were most beneficial when focused on learning support rather than mere exam repetition. Despite these strengths, recurring challenges include inequitable exam design, insufficient institutional support, and limited access to preparation resources. To address these issues, the study recommends enhanced collaboration between institutions, students, and industry stakeholders; adoption of adaptable exam formats; and the development of robust support systems. Ultimately, exit exams should function not only as summative assessments but as formative tools guiding students toward lifelong learning and professional competence.

Abstract

Exit exams in higher education are widely implemented as tools for quality assurance, accountability, and the assessment of student learning outcomes. Despite their intended benefits, these assessments have been linked to various negative consequences affecting students, institutions, and educational systems. This systematic literature review critically evaluates the adverse impacts of exit exams by synthesizing peer-reviewed studies published between 1994 and 2024, following the PRISMA framework. The analysis reveals that exit exams disproportionately disadvantage marginalized student populations, contribute to increased dropout rates, and generate significant psychological stress, resulting in detrimental academic and emotional outcomes. Furthermore, these exams frequently exhibit poor alignment with curricular objectives, thereby undermining their efficacy. Thematic analysis identifies four primary adverse effects: psychological stress, inequitable access to educational opportunities, reduced graduation rates, and misalignment with educational goals. These findings highlight the urgent need for policymakers and educators to reconsider the design and administration of exit exams, emphasizing equity, fairness, and comprehensive assessment approaches. The review concludes by advocating for alternative quality assurance mechanisms that uphold accountability while minimizing harm to students.

Abstract

The concerns of elderly members at Majelis Taklim Syamsul Hidayah Banjarmasin regarding their fluency in reading the Qur’an, especially after gaining awareness of the importance of correct recitation in prayer form the background of this study. The objective is to describe the learning process, instructional methods employed, and challenges faced by the elderly in Qur’an reading guidance sessions. This research adopts a case study method, with data collected through interviews and observations. The findings reveal that the learning process comprises three stages: an opening with the recitation of istighfar, a core activity involving turn-based reading of Iqro or the Qur’an, and a closing prayer together. The instructional methods include the Iqro method, a gentle and personalized motivational approach, an informative method involving repeated explanations, and a participatory method that actively engages the elderly learners. The challenges encountered include memory limitations, cognitive decline, speech difficulties, visual recognition issues of Arabic letters, and other physical constraints. The study concludes that Qur’an instruction for the elderly requires the application of andragogical principles tailored to their psychological and physical conditions. The implications of this research contribute to the development of age-friendly Qur’an learning models and offer a reference framework for other majelis taklim in designing similar programs.

Abstract

The lack of internalization of worship values in contemporary Islamic education often delivered in a normative and decontextualized manner poses a major challenge to the development of students’ spiritual character. This study aims to analyze the educational values of ‘ibadah (worship) found in Qomi’ut Thughyan ‘Ala Syarhi Syu‘bul Iman by Shaykh Muhammad Nawawi bin Umar al-Jawi al-Bantani, and to examine their relevance and actualization in the context of modern Islamic education. A qualitative approach was employed using the library research method, with the classical text serving as the primary source and academic literature as secondary references. The findings reveal that the book outlines core ‘ibadah values, including purification, the five daily prayers, almsgiving (zakat), fasting, i’tikaf, and pilgrimage (hajj), alongside a strong emphasis on discipline in worship. These values are not merely ritualistic but encompass profound moral and spiritual dimensions that contribute to shaping students into religious, responsible, and socially aware individuals. The study concludes that Qomi’ut Thughyan presents transformative and contextual principles of worship education, making it a valuable reference for developing a holistic Islamic education system. The implication is that educators must adapt the worship values from this classical work into contextual and practical teaching strategies to ensure that Islamic education remains spiritually grounded and pedagogically relevant.
