Abstract

In the modern era, logo perception has become crucial as logos serve as visual representations of an institution's identity and values. This research emphasizes the critical role of logo symbolism in shaping the identity and communication strategies of State Islamic Universities (UIN) in Central Java, Indonesia. Despite its significance, there is a notable research gap in the semiotic analysis of these logos, particularly concerning the integration of Islamic identity with local cultural heritage. This study aims to decode the implicit meanings in the logos of UINs in Central Java, examining how these symbols reflect both the universities’ Islamic values and their modern, inclusive identities. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology with semiotic analysis based on Charles Peirce’s semiotics theory and also Cerrato’s color theory, data were collected through documentation techniques from online repositories. The analysis covered logos from UIN Walisongo, UIN Raden Mas Said, UIN Salatiga, UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri, and UIN K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid. Findings reveal that each logo carries layered symbolic meanings, incorporating symbols that reflect Islamic values while harmonizing with local culture. Elements such as gunungan, flowers, and color schemes (green, white, yellow, orange, gold, and black) are prevalent, symbolizing a commitment to preserving cultural values and advancing progressive Islamic education. This study highlights the importance of understanding logo symbolism for reinforcing institutional identity and enhancing public perception, offering insights that could strengthen the global competitiveness and appeal of UINs.

Abstract

Humor is one of the media that provides an interesting aspiration of people. It means comedians and audiences have to know how to imply and understand the real theme to get a good meaning. This study explores the construction of theme and rheme positions in Indonesian humor through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Utilizing the Theme-Rheme theory, the research analyzes various Indonesian clauses to understand how thematic structures contribute to comedic effects. The method involves a detailed breakdown of clauses into their thematic and rhematic components, followed by an examination of how marked and unmarked themes, as well as textual themes, create humor through incongruity and unexpected twists. Practically, the findings reveal that humor often applies from the contrast between serious advice and trivial or absurd explanations, demonstrating that thematic manipulation is crucial in generating comedic effects. This study highlights the effectiveness of the Theme-Rheme framework in analyzing humor and underscores the intricate relationship between language structure and humor.

Abstract

Linguistic politeness, especially in apology situations, is essential for maintaining social harmony and ensuring effective communication across different cultural contexts. The study aimed to examine linguistic politeness among university students in the context of apologies. The study compared politeness strategies between Bruneian and Indonesian university students from different universities. Data were collected using the Discourse Completion Task (DCT) method, where respondents were presented with specific situations or scenarios and asked to express what they would say in those situations. The data was analysed using the politeness model by Brown and Levinson (1987). The study found that students used positive politeness strategies, negative politeness strategies, and bald-on-record strategies. The study’s results show that positive politeness strategies are the most frequently used. The results also indicated that in using politeness in apologies, students employed several sub-strategies, such as greetings, promising, providing reasons, taking responsibility, understanding the interlocutor’s desires, and using titles for interlocutors with higher social status. This research can serve as a guide and lesson for improving linguistic politeness among university students, especially when apologising.

Abstract

This study examines language acquisition in Venezuela's second cycle of education, a critical stage for students aged 12 to 15 as they solidify their proficiency in Spanish and begin to expand their skills in English. This research is vital as it investigates how these methods prepare students for secondary education and a globalized world. The qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations with teachers, administrators, and students to understand the effectiveness of current teaching practices and the challenges faced. The findings reveal a blend of traditional and modern teaching methods in Venezuelan classrooms, particularly the integration of direct instruction and grammar drills with communicative language teaching (CLT). This combination was effective in addressing diverse student needs, particularly in developing strong Spanish language skills. However, the variability in English language proficiency highlighted significant challenges, particularly related to resource limitations and socio-economic disparities. Teachers reported that while traditional methods provided a strong linguistic foundation, the effectiveness of CLT was often hindered by external factors such as inadequate resources and varying levels of student exposure to English outside of school. The study's conclusions emphasize the need for broader educational reforms to address these systemic issues, particularly the need for updated resources, greater access to technology, and enhanced professional development for teachers. The research suggests that while current methodologies are sound, their effectiveness is limited by external constraints. To better prepare students for the globalized world, these challenges must be addressed. Future studies should focus on exploring the impact of socio-economic factors on language acquisition outcomes and the effectiveness of integrating technology in language instruction.

Abstract

Given the widespread appeal and influence of self-help literature, understanding how authors engage and inform their readers through linguistic strategies is crucial. The study aims to explore how thematic structures contribute to the genre’s purpose of motivating and guiding readers. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, involving observation, interpretation, and explanation. The analysis reveals that the most frequent Themes in the text are Unmarked Topical Themes, primarily in the forms of “You,” “I,” and “It.” The text also frequently utilizes Conjunctive Adjuncts as Textual Themes (e.g., "First," "Second") and Modal Adjuncts as Interpersonal Themes. The zig-zag pattern emerged as the dominant Thematic Progression, allowing the author to maintain clarity and engagement. The strategic use of Theme and Mood facilitates an approachable, mentor-like voice, helping to establish a connection with the reader. These findings offer valuable insight into how thematic structures and progression are employed in self-help literature to enhance readability, coherence, and emotional engagement. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the linguistic mechanisms that drive the effectiveness of self-help texts in fulfilling their social and communicative purposes.

Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the 2013’s movie The Conjuring through Nick Lacey’s Repertoire of Elements and Vladimir Propp’s Narrative Theory. The movie, directed by James Wan, is recognized for its intricate horror narrative and rich character development. By examining the movie’s use of style, iconography, character roles, narrative structure, and setting, this research demonstrated how these elements worked together to create a compelling supernatural experience. Applying Lacey’s theory revealed the movie’s adherence to genre conventions through its dark, atmospheric settings and minimal lighting. Interestingly, the movie did not feature a "false hero", a deviation from Propp's theory, which the movie emphasized the clear moral presented in the story. The absence of this character type suggested a more straightforward narrative focus on the struggle between good and evil, without the complication of betrayal from the protagonist's ranks. In conclusion, The Conjuring Movie's linguistic and visual elements  were integral to the movie's ability to engage and terrify its audience. The camera work, lighting, and sound, combined with a well-defined character structure, created a compelling narrative that resonated with viewers, reinforcing the movie's status in the supernatural horror genre.

Abstract

This research examines grammatical and syntactic errors in second language (L2) writing, with a focus on the role of mother tongue interference and developmental processes in second language acquisition. In L2 writing, errors are viewed not merely as mistakes to be corrected, but as reflections of the learner's interlanguage—a transitional linguistic system that represents the learner's current level of grammatical and syntactic understanding. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study relies on a literature review to analyze data from various experts in the field of second language acquisition. The common challenges identified include grammatical interference in the use of articles, prepositions, word order, and subject-descriptor agreement, along with syntactic errors such as inappropriate pronoun use and incorrect word order. The research distinguishes between errors caused by first language (L1) interference and those resulting from developmental processes in L2 learning, offering valuable insights into the learners’ evolving interlanguage systems. The study highlights the importance of targeted pedagogical interventions, such as comparative syntax lessons, focused feedback, and practical exercises, to address these errors and improve L2 writing proficiency. Ultimately, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how L2 learners develop grammar and syntax skills, providing guidance for more effective teaching practices in language instruction.

Abstract

Many of the contemporary challenges faced by women in Africa are deeply intertwined with African traditions and long-standing cultural practices. However, while African traditions indeed contribute to many of the challenges women face today, they also offer pathways to empowerment. African literature and folklore are posited in this study to be sources of retrospection into these African women-related narratives. This study aims to analyse folklore within a selected African literary text, in relation to women-centred narratives and explore the role of folklore in women’s narrative and experiences. Using Tsitsi Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions as a primary text, this study adopts a textual and interpretative analysis framed by feminist and nativist branches of postcolonial theory to achieve the objectives of the study. The study identifies two folklores (storytelling and marriage rituals) as central to women-related narratives and traditions depicted in the text. The analysis further reveals that African folklore can function as a double-edged sword as either reinforcing women’s subjugation or serving as a vehicle for their empowerment. The continuous integration of folklore in literature serves as a tool for illuminating and preserving previous experiences of women and the traditions of African culture. African folklore is an enabler of women subjugation, but it also has the capacity to challenge patriarchal structures and promote women’s empowerment. Deliberate efforts are required to amplify the women-empowering aspects of folklore. Strategic emphasis that focuses on promoting empowering narratives within folklore, challenging and deconstructing harmful narratives through critical engagement, and cultural revitalization by applying a gender lens to traditional practices are some of the implications for women’s empowerment.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of Javanese culture and cultural elements in the traditional game of Blarak-Blarak Sempal through a literary anthropological approach. Using descriptive qualitative methods, this study reveals cultural symbols such as coconut fiber that symbolizes attachment to nature, and pingsut that reflects deliberation and honesty. The poems and songs that accompany the game also describe important elements in the language and art system of Javanese society. These findings make an important contribution to enriching the understanding of the social and cultural values contained in traditional games, while highlighting the role of these games as a medium of cultural and moral education. The implications of the results of this study support local cultural preservation policies, especially in the field of education, by integrating traditional games as a tool to teach cultural values to the younger generation. In addition, this study opens up opportunities for further research related to the role of other traditional games in character formation and strengthening cultural identity among the community. Thus, traditional games such as Blarak-Blarak Sempal have great potential to be preserved and used as a means of learning noble values in community life.
