Abstract

It is fascinating to conduct a study on the directive speech acts because it is so common in everyday life, especially in conversation. Sometimes communication fails simply because the hearer does not understand what the speaker is saying. As a result, the intended message could not be sent effectively and several differences were found in the use of speech acts. The focus of this research was to analyze the use of directive speech acts in the movie “The Blind Side” by Michael Lewis. The research aimed to (1) identify the types of directive speech acts used by the characters in the movie “The Blind Side” by Michael Lewis, and (2) determine the factors influencing the use of each type of directive speech act by the characters. This research was qualitative, employing descriptive techniques. The data sources included primary sources such as video and script, and secondary sources such as articles, journals, and relevant studies. The researchers utilized documentation, observation, and literature study techniques in data collection to draw conclusions after analysis. Searle’s and Hymes’ theory are used to analyze the data. From the observations and literature study, the results obtained were (1) five types of directive speech acts were found to be used by the characters in the movie, namely command, request, invitation, prohibition, and suggestion, and (2) there were factors influencing the use of each type of directive speech act by the characters, including gender, age, race/skin color, and social status/occupation, with race/skin color being the most dominant factor influencing them.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of clustering techniques to improve students' writing skills in composing descriptive texts. This study used Classroom Action Search (CAR) as the research method. This study consisted of two cycles. Each cycle consists of four steps: Planing, Action, Observation, and Reflection. The researchers conducted this study over almost a month, as each  cycle was conducted in three sessions. To collect and analyze the data, the study used information from interviews, observations, questionnaires, and  students' pre-test and post-test performance to corroborate the data collected. The results of this study indicate that using clustering techniques in teaching descriptive writing can improve students' writing skills. The students' responses showed that they were interested in learning the subject of writing  because they found it easy to write using this technique. Additionally, students' ability on  pre-test and post-test showed  significant improvement. Therefore, the average value for pre-test was 37.30. In the first cycle, the average was 71.60. On the other hand, the average for the second cycle was 80.45. This means that there was an average improvement of 34.30 points or 91.96%  from the student's score from pre-study to the first cycle, and an improvement of 43.14 points or 115.66% in the average score compared to the student's score from pre-study to the second cycle. Based on the this result, the study concluded that teaching descriptive English writing to the 10th grade of SMKN 3 Mataram students using clustering techniques can improve their writing ability.

Abstract

The TikTok application is a social media platform that allows users to upload and edit videos using a variety of features to create content as desired. Its accessibility via mobile phones means that it can be used for online learning anywhere and anytime, effectively functioning as a mobile learning (m-learning) tool. This research focused on utilizing TikTok as a medium to enhance speaking skills in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms. This study employed a qualitative approach to explore the effectiveness of TikTok in improving students' English speaking skills. Data for the research were collected through observations and questionnaires. The study involved 20 students from the Marine Engineering program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya. Through careful analysis of the collected data, the research aimed to determine the impact of TikTok on students' speaking abilities. The results indicated that using TikTok as a medium significantly improved speaking skills in the EFL classroom. Students showed enhanced proficiency in their spoken English, attributed to the engaging and interactive nature of the platform. The study concluded that TikTok is an effective tool for improving students' speaking skills in English as a foreign language. Therefore, incorporating TikTok into EFL instruction can successfully enhance students' speaking abilities, making it a valuable resource for language educators.

Abstract

Language and ethics are intrinsically linked, with ethics playing a crucial role in ensuring politeness and recognizing social distinctions among speakers. One regional language rich in ethical traditions is Madurese, particularly through a practice known as ondhagga. This tradition emphasizes the importance of speech and grammar tailored to the social position of the person being addressed. In Madurese culture, the speaker must consider the listener's social status to appropriately use ondhagga forms. This research highlights two types of ethics within this tradition: normative and descriptive ethics. Normative ethics focuses on defining the behaviors and values that are considered morally good within a social group, guiding individuals on appropriate actions without making judgments. On the other hand, descriptive ethics describes existing behaviors and their meanings, offering insight into actions without prescribing standards. The study analyzed twenty conversational samples across various contexts using qualitative, phenomenological methods. Data was collected through documentation, and analysis was conducted using data reduction and presentation techniques. To ensure validity, the research employed data triangulation and credibility testing. The aim was to explain how normative and descriptive ethics operate within the ondhagga tradition. The findings emphasize the importance of ethical communication, tailored to context and situation. It underscores that ethics in a language not only applies to Madurese but is relevant across all languages and cultures. Ultimately, language ethics reflects our nobility as human beings, as it shapes respectful communication in everyday interactions.

Abstract

Online games, particularly Mobile Legends, have become highly popular among students, especially college students. While engaging and entertaining, this attraction can lead students to neglect important aspects of their behavior, including their language use. This research focuses on the impact of online gaming on language politeness among Unitomo students living in Pumpugan 3, Surabaya. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the influence of frequent online gaming on the level of language politeness among these students, with a qualitative research design conducted in April 2024. The study focused on five Unitomo students, consisting of three female and two male participants, who were active Mobile Legends players. Data collection methods included interviews and observations, providing insights into the students' everyday language use. The results revealed that the environment, particularly time spent playing online games, significantly affected their language politeness. The students often adopted words and phrases from the online gaming environment into their daily conversations, including vulgar language such as "fuck you," "damn," "crazy," "dog," and others, both in English and Indonesian. These findings underscore the importance of self-awareness in maintaining polite language, particularly as the influence of gaming environments can contribute to the erosion of linguistic decency. Developing and practicing polite language habits from a young age is essential to counteract the negative influence of such environments. The research highlights the need for greater awareness and personal responsibility in fostering polite communication in both gaming and everyday contexts.

Abstract

Along with the times and advances in technology, language is also experiencing changes which result in the formation of new vocabulary and new variations of morphemes. To understand the process of change, researchers are encouraged to conduct research in the field of morphophonemics. This study examines the morphophonemic processes in Boy Candra's novel "Ingkar," focusing on phoneme changes, additions, and disappearances. This research focuses more on the morphophonemic processes in the prefixes meN- and peN. This study is done in qualitative ways because information is obtained by describing words or sentences that contain morphophonemic processes. The research instrument is the researcher himself with the help of an indicator table to make it easier for the researcher to process the data. The data collection technique is in the form of a listening technique, with basic tapping techniques and advanced techniques, namely proficient free-involved listening. The findings align with Ramlan's theoretical framework, which outlines specific phoneme transformations based on morpheme interactions. Key observations include the transformation of the phoneme /n/ to /m/ when meN- and peN- join words with certain prefixes, and the addition of phonemes in specific morphological environments. These patterns illustrate the dynamic interplay between morphology and phonology in Indonesian. The recommendations for further research suggest comparative analyses across different genres and dialects, as well as cognitive and psycholinguistic studies to deepen understanding of morphophonemic processing. This research contributes to a comprehensive understanding of morphophonemics in Indonesian, with implications for linguistic theory, language teaching, and computational applications.

Abstract

The main issue in improving academic writing skills in English among college students is the difficulty in developing coherent and grammatically accurate writing. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of using AI-based technology in enhancing students' writing abilities and addressing gaps in traditional teaching methods that often lack personalized feedback due to limited teaching time. This research employs a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative pre-experimental design and qualitative methods. The study uses an experimental design with control and experimental groups consisting of students from classes 1A and 1B. A pre-test was conducted, followed by three writing assignments over seven weeks, with the experimental group receiving AI feedback. The results show a significant improvement in the writing skills of the experimental group, with average scores increasing from 1204 to 1364, a statistically significant difference (p <0.05). Additionally, this study also explores students' perceptions and attitudes towards AI tools, providing insights into the acceptance and effectiveness of such tools in diverse educational environments. It can be concluded that the integration of AI-based tools in teaching academic English writing significantly improves students' writing skills. The integration of AI in English writing instruction can be an effective solution to address teaching challenges and enhance the quality and effectiveness of learning. This research recommends a wider application of AI technology in education to support the development of students' writing skills.

Abstract

In the teaching-learning process, a classroom conversation is managed by the teacher to attain specific purposes. The success of teaching-learning process, in addition, requires teacher-student interaction to gain relevant experiences in students’ target language. During the class, taking-turn will likely happen in a classroom interaction. However, during this class, the teacher-student turn seems to be asymmetrical. The teacher tends to be the main speaker allocating the turn to maintain teacher-student interaction. This research, further, aims at exploring turn-taking strategies utilised by EFL pre-service teacher. The researcher utilises a qualitative research approach with a conversation analysis. The data used in this research is unscripted-recorded classroom video. Furthermore, the data is transcribed into conversational data to obtain the data of turn-taking strategies utilised by pre-service teacher in EFL classroom setting. In analysing the data, the researcher ulitises Sacks’ framework (1984). Based on the result of data analysis, it is found that there are seven turn-taking strategies utilised by pre-service teacher in EFL classroom settting. These are adjacency pairs, addressing term, utterance in-completor, repair technique, possible pre-closing, overlaps, and tag question. In addition, the teacher mostly uses question-answer adjacency pairs during the teaching-learning process. This, however, leads to asymmetric turn between teacher and students. The teacher seems to be more dominant to initiate and take turn during classroom conversation. Possible pre-closing, on the other hand, is the least turn-taking strategy used by the pre-service teacher in the teaching-learning process. This turn used by pre-service teacher to close or end a conversation in the teaching-learning process. Since this research has dealt with pre-service teacher, the results will be beneficial for the pre-service teacher to manage turn-taking strategies in EFL classroom setting to ensure the classroom interaction and conversation symmetrical.

Abstract

Gender roles are determined by expectations and values within society, which can lead to stereotypes and prejudice. Stereotypes are judgments that are considered correct for a group, while racial stereotypes are assumptions about all people of the same race. These racial stereotypes can make life difficult for women. This research aims to analyze the inequality expressed in Girl, Woman, Other and how the disparity occurs in society. The study employs Kimberle Crenshaw's Black Feminism theory. Moreover, this study uses a qualitative descriptive research method to analyze the novel. The information, approach, and theories are drawn from books, dictionaries, internet sources, journals, encyclopedias, and other primary and secondary sources. The primary data is the novel Girl, Woman, Other. The result of this study is that the novel Girl, Woman, Other clearly illustrates that inequality occurs not only because there is one identity that is owned but because each character owns several intersecting social identities. Race, gender, class, and sexual orientation that intersect with one another are the leading causes of the inequalities experienced by the characters in Girl, Woman, Other. The inequality experienced by the six characters causes them to struggle to gain equality in society as human beings.

Abstract

The primary goal of communication is information sharing for mutual understanding between the sender and the recipient. A news headline is a form of communication that serves as the gist of the main points in the lead. It is written in a more succinctly attention-grabbing manner. It makes the readers curious and piques their interest. However, some of the Nigerian newspaper headlines are ambiguous. They are open to two or more interpretations against the writer’s intended meaning. Therefore, this study investigated the lexical and structural ambiguity in the Nigerian newspapers: The Nigerian Tribune and The Punch. The use of Theory of Meaning by Ludwig Wittgenstein served as the theoretical framework for this study. The data were collected from The Nigerian Tribune and The Punch and qualitatively analysed. Ambiguous headlines were found and their interpretations were given, using the Use Theory of meaning. The study found that ambiguities are frequently used in newspaper headlines due to the polysemous nature of the lexical choices, the dual function of some parts of speech, indexical references and wrong places of prepositional phrases. The analysis showed that these phrases were not placed immediately after their antecedent and thus resulted in ambiguous headlines. The study concluded that headline writers should discontinue using too much ambiguity, to avoid discouraging the readers. The deck, kicker and rider should also be used along with the headlines. Also, the readers are encouraged to contextually study the contents to get the precise and intended message.
