Abstract

This research aimed to elaborate on the Indonesian Jewish community, represented by The United Indonesian Jewish Community led by Rabbi Benjamin Meijer Verbrugge and Sha'ar Hashamayim Synagogue under the spiritual guidance of Rabbi Yaakov Baruch. This research followed the theoretical framework of multiple religious belonging (MRB), pioneered by Catherine Cornille (1961–). This research combined primary data from in-depth interviews conducted offline and online with congregation members of both communities, as well as an extensive literature review. This research commenced its analysis by considering the conflicting religious identities of Indonesian Jews within their Indonesian identity card (Kartu Tanda Penduduk, abbreviated KTP in Bahasa Indonesia), which eventually investigated the identity of Indonesian Jews. This research concluded that MRB’s scientific schema, consisting of elements of Cultural Belonging, Family Belonging, Situational Belonging, Believing without Belonging, and Asymmetrical Belonging, may not fit entirely to the theological concern of Indonesian Jews, yet some of its elements may fit into a more secular, lower, context of ‘Civil’ Identity. The ambiguity of the existence of Indonesian Jews prevails because they are Jewish, practising Jewish rituals, and firmly committed to Jewish tradition, yet cannot conceal their Jewish identity fully in their KTP. Further investigation concerning their level of religiosity and how their Jewishness is practiced may invite further research.

Abstract

This research delves into the education system and network of Quran memorization Islamic boarding schools (also known as pondok pesantren tahfidz Quran in Bahasa Indonesia) in Kudus, Surakarta, and Bogor. The study was conducted in Pondok Pesantren Yanbu'ul Qur'an in Kudus, Ma’had Tahfizhul Qur’an, Yayasan Sosial dan Pendidikan Islam Isy Karima in Surakarta, and Pesantren Terpadu Darul Qur’an Mulia in Bogor. The research methodology employed was a descriptive, analytical, and historical approach integrated and presented through qualitative processes involving data collection through observation, interviews, and document analysis at the three Quran memorization Islamic boarding schools. The data analysis steps include data reduction, data display, and data verification through triangulation. The research findings indicate the uniqueness or characteristics of each Quran memorization Islamic boarding schools. Pondok Pesantren Yanbu'ul Qur'an has the uniqueness of five concepts: sincerity, obedience, compliance, the importance of quality, patience, and meticulousness. Meanwhile, Ma’had Tahfizhul Qur’an, Yayasan Sosial dan Pendidikan Islam Isy Karima required students to complete the recitation of the entire Quran, 30 chapters, within a duration of two years, utilizing visual, audio, and kinesthetic techniques. Pesantren Terpadu Darul Qur’an Mulia features comprehensive interaction in a halaqoh format encompassing techniques such as recitation, comprehension, memorization, and application that nurture noble character. Regarding the inevitability of the network, the research emphasizes that the Quran memorization Islamic boarding schools serves as a focal point for the community. Although exclusively owned by the kyai (Muslim leader), these Quran memorization Islamic boarding schools remain a possession of the broader community, with a self-reliant management system independent of specific government or non-governmental organizations.

The data sources in this study are the community around the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, visitors, and managers of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. The data were analyzed using data reduction techniques, data presentation, and conclusions. The empirical findings of this study have shown that there has been a shift in the goals of religious tourism destinations from those that used to be pilgrimages to tombs and have now shifted to visits to major mosques, one of which is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Based on the results and findings of this study, it can be concluded that transformation is closely related to the changes from one form to another. The findings of this study explain the process of transforming a religious tourism destination, which is usually a pilgrimage to a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. The existence of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque has been proven to have a better financial impact on the surrounding community.

Abstract

The proliferation of hijrah groups among youth has had a significant impact, with positive outcomes such as enhanced religious understanding among teenagers and an increase in the adoption of more Islamic attire. However, this has also brought about negative consequences, including the dissemination of radical and textual interpretations, leading to conservatism. This article aims to uncover the controversy surrounding early marriage among Muslim millennials, driven by a tendency towards textual religious understanding. The research employs a qualitative method, drawing primary data from social media platforms of anti-dating millennial communities and online Islamic organizations in Indonesia. Secondary data were sourced from books, journals, and other relevant articles. The research findings indicate that controversy arises from the selection of hadith texts and differing interpretation methods. Anti-dating communities use motivational hadiths to support early marriage, employing a literal textual understanding related to sexual motivation, religious and individual piety, the vision of a happy family, emulation of the Prophet's marriage, and assurance of sustenance from Allah. Conversely, scholars use hadiths to reject early marriages with contextual understanding. The disregard of the youth for the views of scholars opposing early marriage indicates a shift in religious authority among Muslim millennials from traditional figures to influencers popular on social media. Early marriage reflects the hybridization of the religious identity of Muslim millennials, maintaining religious values while remaining trendy and cool. The re-reading of hadiths is conducted by examining the social-historical context and contemporary circumstances within the discourse of modernity.

Abstract

Research on waqf sustainability is increasing in popularity, showing exponential growth in publication and citation numbers. The realm of research has grown intricate and fragmented, thereby posing a growing challenge to the regulation of waqf sustainability. The main purpose of this study is to organise and integrate the preliminary studies on the theme of waqf sustainability. To this end, this study involved bibliometric analysis, distinguishing it from previous analyses, which were outdated and/or different focus. We collected 84 articles extracted from Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases, covering 20 years from 2001 to 2022. The findings showed that the most prolific authors were from Malaysia. There are five research themes regarding waqf sustainability, including the accountability of Islamic social finance as a third-sector economy, the sustainability of Islamic microfinance, the role of intellectual capital in waqf institutions, the effectiveness of management, and the performance measurement of waqf institutions. This study shows that the performance of waqf institutions for waqf sustainability is scant. Hence, there is an important research gap that can be addressed in future research since sustainability is a priority agenda as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) blueprint.

Abstract

This research aims to examine character education in pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools also known as pondok pesantren) as a model of religious education in transforming the attitudes of students in line with the values and culture of a diverse society. This study is based on documents related to the curriculum and student guidance system, which were confirmed through interviews with leaders and teachers, as well as observations at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, Indonesia. The research findings indicate that Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, Indonesia, has implemented a transformative education system. Students have undergone a transformation from traditional, fanatic, and closed values to modern, rational, disciplined, inclusive, independent, and responsible ones. The transformation in students' personalities occurs not only through classroom learning but also through reflective engagement in pesantren management, discussions, and public speaking exercises. The findings of this study imply that the religious education system in pesantrens should prioritize not only the cognitive aspects of doctrinal religious knowledge, but also involve students in society, fostering open, tolerant, and rational characters.

Abstract

Architectural spaces are one of the most important aspects that aim to establish dialogue between humans and their surroundings. The objectives of the current study were to describe the concept of architectural space, its constituent sections, the environmental elements that influence them (such as lighting, ventilation, air conditioning, privacy, and view), and the connections between their internal and external elements. The significance of this study comes from the fact that space size is a fundamental problem. This is because a large space requires larger services, which, while satisfying many needs, are not cost-effective when it comes to controlling factors, such as temperature, light levels, and the quality of the space and walls.   One must understand how to distinguish it from other spaces and how to grade the spaces appropriately, bearing in mind the traits and way of life of the society being examined, to produce a location that is suitable for all purposes. Using effective indicators for each architectural space, each interior design component, and each design, the study utilized a descriptive methodology as well as proof of their effect on the psychological and behavioral health of the individual tenants in a selected sample of 25 residential units in one of the (388 dwelling units) residential complexes in the Al-Qadisiyah area of Tikrit. According to the   findings, 60% of respondents were satisfied with the interior design of the housing units, 80% were satisfied with how the housing units looked from outside, and 12% were satisfied with every aspect of the housing units. 90% of people are content with their housing 90% of individuals are satisfied with the interior of their home, 90% are satisfied with the colors and materials utilized, 85% are satisfied with the lighting, 80 percent of individuals are satisfied with their view, 80 percent are glad with their privacy, 70 percent are happy with their home& orientation, the results show the importance of interior design in enhancing the architectural environment, which benefits the user on both a physical and psychological level. It has been successful in providing   location authenticity and a sense of urban belonging.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explore the concept of ikram al-dayf and its potential to be adapted into the Muslim-friendly tourism and hospitality practices. This article also introduces a set of ethical values for honoring guests in reference to the concept of ikram al-dayf. The concept of ikram al-dayf is pertinent to improve the Muslim-friendly staffs’ knowledge and understanding on how they should treat their guests better, since their service quality especially related to customer service aspect is still questionable. The article in the beginning presents the Muslim-friendly tourism and hospitality industry scenario and its related standards to show the needs for quality Muslim-friendly guest service. Next, it describes the established dimensions of service quality (SERVQUAL) model. Third, it explains the concept of ikram al-dayf and its relationship to guest service quality. It is based primarily on evidence from the Qur’an and the hadith. Fourth, it inserts ethical values based on the concept of ikram al-dayf into the dimensions of SERVQUAL. Finally, it briefly outlines the importance of applying ikram al-dayf ethics to be applied in Muslim-friendly hospitality practices. The article highlighted four core ethical values, namely qawlan karima, amanah, ta’ awun and ihsan which need to be given special attention for the best quality of service. These four ethical values suit the four dimensions of service quality and can be applied in the guest service phases (pre-arrival, arrival, stay, and departure of guests). The findings can then be embedded in the existing SERVQUAL dimensions as an added value for the use of Muslim-friendly hospitality players. The appreciation of ikram al-dayf ethics is not merely meant to portray the beauty of Islamic morality but also to improve service quality and achieve higher customer satisfaction. Eventually, it will be a competitive advantage for Muslim-friendly hospitality services to attract more customers especially among Muslims guests.
