Abstract

The ability to read and write in grade 1 elementary school students is often a challenge in early education, with traditional teaching methods sometimes being less effective in improving these basic skills. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Problem Based Learning (PBL) in improving the reading and writing skills of grade 1 elementary school students at ICC Al-Anshar Bahau. Using a one group pretest-posttest design, this research involved six students with skills assessment through pretest and posttest. The results of the analysis showed significant improvements in reading and writing skills, with the average student score increasing from 10.8 points on the pretest to 18 points on the posttest. These findings indicate that PBL can effectively improve reading and writing skills in grade 1 elementary school students. The implication of this research is that implementing PBL can be a useful strategy in basic education curricula, with the potential to improve overall student engagement and learning outcomes. This study suggests further research with a more comprehensive design and larger sample size to confirm the results and expand understanding of the effectiveness of PBL in a broader context.

Abstract

Although there is empirical support for the Before-During-After (BDA) strategy, there is still a gap in its application in extensive reading programs, particularly in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This study investigates the effectiveness of the Before-During-After (BDA) strategy in enhancing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' reading comprehension in an extensive reading context. A quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control groups was used, involving 15 students in the experimental group and 23 in the control group at Merdeka University of Malang, Indonesia. The study assesses how BDA's structured phases (pre-, during-, post-reading) address common reading barriers such as idea identification, vocabulary deficits, and text structure analysis. The experimental group, which utilized the BDA strategy over 8 weeks, showed significant improvement in reading proficiency, with a mean post-test score increase of 22.3% compared to the control group's 15.2%. Statistical analysis confirmed the effectiveness of BDA (p<0.001). Qualitative data from student journals revealed that BDA activities such as vocabulary activation, predictive engagement, and visual literacy significantly aided comprehension. These findings underscore the value of BDA in overcoming specific EFL challenges, making it a practical tool for enhancing reading achievement in diverse educational settings. This implies that educators and curriculum developers should consider incorporating BDA-based strategies into EFL reading programs to support more effective and learner-centered literacy instruction.

Abstract

The adaptation of the new multidimensional career insecurity scale (MU-CI-S) measuring instrument aims to adjust the Indonesian cultural and language context, so that each item and dimension has standardized validity and reliability for further research in the context of workers in Indonesia. MU-CI-S is a measuring instrument developed and tested by previous researchers on workers in Germany and Switzerland. The use of career insecurity measurement tools with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds requires a series of adaptation processes based on the International Test Commission. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to test the validity of the constructs and instruments that have been translated or modified to ensure the factor structure matches the data obtained. The study involved 379 employees in various industrial sectors in Indonesia. The analysis showed that the adapted scale model had a good fit with fit index parameters that met the standards (CFI = 0.965, TLI = 0.960. RMSEA = 0.048, SRMR = 0.029). Reliability tests with Cronbach's Alpha and Omega McDonald showed values above 0.80 on all dimensions, indicating that this scale is consistent in measuring career insecurity. In addition, convergent validity tested through the Average Variance Extracted (AVE) value shows results that meet the criteria (> 0.50), indicating that this scale is suitable for use in further research in Indonesia.

Abstract

Corruption poses a significant challenge in Indonesia, adversely affecting various sectors, including the economy, politics, education, and society at large. Corruption has become ingrained as a culture, character, and mindset within Indonesian society, a phenomenon inherited since the colonial era. This study investigates the effectiveness of video-based learning through short films in enhancing response text about anti-corruption character education for 7th-grade junior high school students in Sidoarjo. It also aims to analyze the impact of the video-based learning method on students' understanding of anti-corruption values and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors for its implementation. The qualitative research employs a case study approach, focusing on 30 students writing in Response text after watching the short film "RAPOR". This research uses observation, interview, survey, and supporting document for analysing research data. Using categoriation table and graphic are helping the research validation. Findings indicate that video-based learning significantly improves students' understanding of response text which mentions and argues anti-corruption values, enhances critical thinking skills, and fosters discussion engagement. Key supporting factors include the interactive nature of short films, which makes moral lessons more relatable while inhibiting factors encompass limited access to quality educational films and the need for adequate time and resources for analysis. Overall, the study underscores the potential of video-based methods to effectively instill integrity-driven values in the younger generation, thereby contributing to the long-term goal of reducing corruption in Indonesia. Recommendations for educational strategies to improve access and implementation of video-based learning are provided to maximize its impact on character education.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed approaches to science and mathematics education, notably through the use of interactive simulations. One of the most prominent innovations is PhET Simulations, widely employed to enhance conceptual learning and 21st-century skills. This study aims to analyze the trends and contributions of PhET Interactive Simulations in science and mathematics education through a bibliometric approach based on Scopus data (2006–2024). Using the PRISMA method, 82 selected articles were analyzed via VOSviewer and CSV to map publication dynamics, citations, international collaborations, and research focus. The results indicate a significant increase in publications since 2017, peaking in 2020–2021 due to technology adoption during the COVID 19 pandemic. Indonesia dominates in publication quantity (40 documents), while the United States leads in citation influence. Key topics include enhancing conceptual understanding, integrating problem-based learning (PBL) models, and utilizing interactive simulations for critical thinking skills. Early publications (2006–2008, remain the most influential references with 263 citations.  However, the study identifies gaps, including limited research on long-term impacts, cultural context variations, and educators’ roles in simulation-based learning. This analysis recommends exploring PhET integration in STEM models, developing adaptive pedagogical strategies, and conducting comparative studies on simulation vs. conventional methods. The findings underscore PhET’s critical role as a transformative tool in digital education, particularly in facilitating exploratory and collaborative learning.

Abstract

Writing must pay attention to spelling, diction, and the use of figures of speech to produce quality written works. Personification figures of speech play an important role in writing skills because they can help writers create more lively and imaginative writing, as well as increase the appeal of written works to readers. By giving human characteristics to objects or animals, writers can make written works more interesting and easier to understand. However, during observations and interviews, it was still found that the writing skills of personification figures of speech at SDN Jatibarang 01 Central Java were still low because the use of media that was only limited to books made students bored when studying. The provision of interactive media is very much needed to overcome this problem. Flipbook is one of the interactive media, easy to use and its contents can be adjusted to learning materials such as personification figurative language materials and animations can be added according to the contents so that they are more harmonious and interesting. The purpose of this study was to produce flipbook media and test its effectiveness in helping to improve writing skills, especially in writing personification figures of speech. The researcher used the Research and Development model ADDIE research type. It can be seen from the results of the trial that the flipbook was said to be very feasible by the media expert validator with a score of 93.33% and the material validator with a score of 90%. In the T test, the researcher used a paired sample t-test and the test results showed a sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.00 so that the value <0.05 can be seen that there is a significant difference in the pre-test and post-test of the use of flipbook media. In the N-Gain test, the N-Gain value of 0.4291 is in the moderate category, which shows an increase after using the media, as seen from the average pre-test value which from 72 to 84.. It can be concluded that flipbooks are effective in improving personification writing skills.

Abstract

This study addresses the urgent need for adaptive digital learning innovations in schools undergoing systemic reform, particularly within the Sekolah Penggerak program in Indonesia. These schools face significant challenges in sustaining instructional continuity due to demanding teacher development agendas and limited digital infrastructure. The research aims to design, implement, and validate ubiquitous learning (u-learning) modules that enhance digital pedagogy while aligning with real-world classroom dynamics. Employing a Design-Based Research (DBR) methodology, the study was conducted through iterative cycles of design, testing, feedback, and refinement involving teachers and students across multiple educational levels. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) to describe patterns of teacher readiness, student engagement, satisfaction, and module usability. Inferential statistics such as paired sample t-tests were conducted to evaluate differences in learning outcomes before and after the intervention. The findings indicate substantial improvements in teacher digital readiness, student engagement, and learning outcomes. Teachers demonstrated enhanced confidence in integrating mobile-based tools, while students reported increased motivation and autonomy. The resulting framework—the Iterative Contextualized Ubiquitous Learning Framework (ICULF)—offers a replicable model for implementing context-responsive, co-designed digital instruction because it technologically flexible and easily adapted across educational levels. This research contributes both a practical solution for digital pedagogy in high-demand school settings and a theoretical model that redefines the role of educators as instructional designers. The study concludes that effective educational technology integration depends not only on tool quality, but also on participatory, iterative design processes that reflect institutional realities and empower user agency.

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study examines code mixing practices in Indonesian language learning among seventh-grade teachers and students at State Junior High School 45 of Surabaya. It focuses on identifying the types, forms, causes, functions, and impacts of code mixing in classroom activities. Data were gathered through observation and teacher questionnaires. Findings show various forms of code mixing, including word, phrase, clause, baster, and repeated word insertions. Both inward and outward code mixing types were observed. Factors contributing to code mixing include urgency, second-party influence, emphasis, habitual relaxed communication, and speaker duality. Functionally, code mixing helps clarify meaning, fosters familiarity, maintains communication, and strengthens local cultural identity. It is used to create a more relaxed and engaging learning environment, encouraging student participation and improving comprehension. However, it also poses a risk to students’ proficiency in standard Indonesian, as they may become too reliant on regional language. Despite this drawback, the overall impact of code mixing in this context is largely positive, enhancing student understanding and classroom interaction.
