Abstract

The existence of contextual learning resources that are able to accommodate students' enrichment materials independently is still not found too much. The aims of this study were to: 1) examine the diversity of fauna at Gembira Loka Zoo; and 2) developing an e-module for material enrichment on the topic of biodiversity by utilizing the results of research on faunal diversity at Gembira Loka Zoo. This Research and Development (RnD) used three main stages of the 4D model, namely define, design, and develop. The results showed that at Gembira Loka Zoo there were 88 types of fauna, including Class Gnathostomata, Class Amphibia, Reptiles, Aves, and Mammals, then the conservation agency used SEAZA guidelines for the welfare and care of the fauna. The data is then developed into an e-module for the enrichment of fauna biodiversity which has the potential as a learning resource. The e-modules that have been compiled are considered feasible by material experts, media, and educators to be used on the correctness of the concept as well as aspects of content, appearance, graphics, programming, language, and independent learning. The compiled e-modules can also be read and considered attractive by students in the aspects of content, appearance, programming, language, and independent learning. The modules that have been developed through this research are expected to be used for biology enrichment in various schools in Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Flipped classroom approaches envision students using technology to access the lecture and other instructional resources outside of the classroom to engage them in active learning during class time. Although flipped classroom practices have been used in a number of educational studies and found positive outcomes, there were still some challenges with this approach. Therefore, there is a  need for an innovative flipped classroom. In this article, the researcher presents a 5E-flipped learning environment approach and collected results of such data. The approach incorporates a 5E learning cycle model and flipped learning practices, making it accessible to anyone who wants to implement a 5E-flipped learning environment experience in their course. The 5E-flipped learning environment educational model proposes could help students to achieve higher order and deeper levels of learning as they engage in active work during online and face-to-face sessions. However, the thematic analysis of qualitative data  three sources, participants learning dairy, focused group discussion and interview of 12 medical assistant students emerged some challenges they faced in a 5E-flipped learning environment. They faced challenges on learning activities which focused on fail to accomplish learning task and challenges on personal barriers related to lack of independent initiative and heavy responsibility on learners which influence their engagement in learning process. Therefore, the 5E-flipped learning activities need to be designed with these considerations in mind to encourage active student participation in online and classroom activities.

Abstract

With the emergence of new learning approaches, it has become more troublesome learners can pragmatically learn in the long run, especially when learning a foreign language is involved. Flaws and deficiency in learning arises in most cases of EFL classroom where the development language skills like reading and writing are inconclusive. This study aimed to look into the impact of educational practices on the reading and writing skills of learners, with a specific focus on the gaps and bonds in EFL learning while communication skills carried follow-ups. The study employed a mixed methodology, which embraced communication contexts placed in the teaching process, and self-perceptions of the participants in a multidimensional communication axis to collect data via surveys, observational forms and exploratory statistics. The results indicate that while there is a stable level of variation in terms of reading and writing achievement, there are setbacks in certain areas such as fill-in-the-blank questions in complex activities and sentence rewriting tasks. Additionally, the study found that providing students with picture clues can improve their performance. The study also suggests that blending both reading and writing skills in activities can lead to large linkages and improvements in performance.

Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, institutions were forced to shift their teaching from face-to-face classes to online classes. In non-formal education, this means that there are different styles and approaches to teaching that are being employed without proper training or guidance as they are not following the general curriculum provided by the government. The research intended to assist non-formal education by validating their teaching and learning process during the COVID-19 period. The study follows the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate) model to analyze and give an evaluation of the teaching practice. The research is a form of community service assistance in determining the best practices for teaching language during a pandemic in Mayantara School Malang. The result is proposed as a reference for other non-formal education. The research resulted in best practices in managerial and teaching applications. The result is divided into three principal best practices, teaching approaches, cooperation, and material development. The non-formal education should understand these aspects well and further implement their teaching and learning activities to prepare for situations that may occur.
