Abstract

This study aims to describe mathematical communication between male and female students with low mathematical performance and to identify ways to support their mathematical communication skills. Students with mathematical abilities often struggle to express mathematical ideas clearly, making it important to explore their communication patterns and develop effective teaching strategies. A male and a female student from the twelfth grade of high school, were chosen as participants due to their low performance in mathematics. The selection of these subjects was based on the method of pairing data created by Milles. Data collection involved administering tests and using a semi-structured interview approach, which were then analyzed qualitatively. The results of this research indicated that there are differences in mathematical communication exhibited by male and female students. Both participants expressed mathematical concepts by identifying key points obtained from the test. They correctly used mathematical notation and adequately represented their ideas through graphical means. The male student showed a stronger grasp by connecting various concepts. However, there were instances when they struggled to articulate their thoughts accurately in writing. The results of this study provide insights for teachers in designing teaching strategies that improve low-achieving students' mathematical communication skills, both oral and written communication. This is expected to support students in expressing mathematical ideas effectively.

Abstract

Fodder is a high-yielding, space-efficient animal feed that can be harvested in a short period, making it crucial for sustainable livestock nutrition. However, improving both the growth and nutritional content of fodder remains a challenge. This study aimed to investigate the effects of liquid smoke application on the germination, growth, and nutritional quality of corn fodder. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used, consisting of five treatments: seeds soaked in 0% (control, P0), 10% (P1), 20% (P2), 30% (P3), and 40% (P4) liquid smoke concentrations for 1 hour. The results showed that liquid smoke treatment did not significantly influence germination parameters, including Final Germination Percentage (FGP), Mean Germination Time (MGT), and Mean Germination Rate (MGR). However, significant effects were observed on growth indicators such as the number of leaves per sprout and dry weight. Furthermore, liquid smoke notably enhanced the crude protein and crude lipid content of the corn fodder, though it did not alter crude fiber levels. This study presents a novel approach to improving fodder quality using plant-derived smoke compounds, offering a simple, low-cost pre-treatment method for enhancing the nutritional profile of corn fodder. The findings imply that liquid smoke can serve as a natural biostimulant, potentially replacing or supplementing synthetic feed additives. Future research should explore the use of smoke water or direct plant-derived smoke under aerobic conditions to optimize germination and further boost fodder quality. These insights contribute to the development of more efficient and sustainable animal feed strategies.

Abstract

Academic writing skills are essential competencies for students to support academic success and scholarly publication; however, many students still struggle to produce publishable academic writing. This study aims to explore the use of an authentic learning approach as a strategy to help students complete academic writing assignments effectively. This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach, using systematic observation of variables. Thirty students who enrolled in the academic writing course of Universitas Terbuka (UT) were involved as respondents in this present study. The participants had to follow the systematic online learning sessions of the academic writing course. After completing the academic writing course, participants must be able to write a proper academic article for a related journal. The academic writing online course was designed and developed with the following nine principles of authentic learning: authentic context, authentic tasks and activities, access to expert performances, multiple roles and perspectives, supporting collaborative construction of knowledge, promoting reflection and articulation, providing coaching and scaffolding, and assessing the students' writing assignment. The results of the study indicated that students' scores increased after completing the authentic learning-based academic writing courses. The study recommends that an authentic learning approach is essential in an academic writing course, as it provides real learning experiences that help students complete the academic writing assignments.

Abstract

This study examines how meaning and moral equality are negotiated in the multimodal translation of bilingual digital storybooks used in Indonesian primary education. Based on the Multimodal Discourse Translation and Analysis Study, this study adopts a qualitative multimodal case study design that focuses on the bilingual digital storybook Putri dans Hutan. The study involved a textual analysis of bilingual translation units, a multimodal analysis of visual and auditory elements, and classroom-based data collected through observation and interviews with teachers and students. These findings reveal that moral equity in bilingual digital storybooks is not only achieved through verbal translation but emerges through the interaction of translation strategies, multimodal resources, and translanguaging practices in the classroom. Dynamic equality is identified as the dominant translation strategy, especially in the morally charged segment, as it prioritizes emotional accessibility and moral clarity for young learners. When linguistic simplification reduces moral explicitness, visual and auditory elements play a compensatory role by reinforcing emotional cues and moral orientation. Classroom translation further mediates moral understanding, allowing students to negotiate and internalize moral meaning by utilizing Indonesian and English. This study contributes to translation studies by extending the concept of equality into multimodal and pedagogical contexts. It also offers practical implications for educators, translators, and digital media designers by highlighting the importance of multimodal coherence and classroom mediation in conveying moral values through bilingual digital storybooks.
