EL2J = English Language and Literature Journal publishes articles on literature, language, and language teaching from various perspectives, covering both literary and fieldwork studies. The journal puts emphasis on aspects related to language studies, with special reference to culture, literature, linguistics, and language teaching. This journal always places English language and literature in the central focus of academic inquiry and invites any comprehensive observation with various dimensions in the country. The journal, serving as a forum for the study of literature, language, and language teaching, supports studies of particular themes and interdisciplinary studies in relation to the subjects. It has become a medium of exchange of ideas and research findings from various traditions of learning that have interacted in a scholarly manner.

Abstract

This study describes the visual signs and their meanings in the Prince Ali music video by Will Smith. This research aims to find out what visual signs and their meanings in Prince Ali's music videos. In this case, visual signs and their meaning are very important for music video viewers, because in every appearance of actors, actresses, and settings have a certain meaning. In this study focused only on visual signs and their meanings. There are 5 visual signs in this study, including appearance, manner, activity, props and setting. This study used a qualitative descriptive method in analyzing the data. Dyer's theory is used in this study to analyze visual signs and their meanings. The results of this study found 25 visual signs in Prince Ali music video. Furthermore, all the result indicated that the visual sign and its meaning in the music video are in accordance with the theory proposed by Dyer's. All results from this study include all types of visual signs.

Abstract

This article is entitled “THE ANALYSIS SEMOTIC OF WHISKAS AN ADVERTISEMENT CAT FOOD” advertising is communication with the specific purpose of commerce a product or service. Semiotics is the science of signs. This research has the purpose of analysis semiotic in advertisement Whiskas. The analysis research meaning in semiotics and focuses more on and understands a sign and a sign when the sign is advertised Whiskas is a cat food brand that Whiskas has been producing the best cat food since 1958 and we always improve and guarantee the quality and quality of the best nutritional cat food throughout history. This research used the theory Ferdinand de Saussure system signifier and signified. The method employed in this analysis is descriptive qualitative with this Associate in there's an understanding of semiotics in advertisement Whiskas cat food. In the research analysis two questions are signs on advertisement Whiskas and characteristics of advertisement Whiskas. the data analysis takes in the website and YouTube.

Abstract

As part of this inquiry, the researcher evaluated the plot type of Incredibles 2, which was released in 2018. This study is to determine the many sorts of storylines that were employed by the writer in the motion picture The Incredibles 2 (also known as “Incredibles 2”), which is also known as “Incredibles 2.” The researcher employed descriptive approaches in order to describe and analyze the data that was obtained for this study. In order to gain a detailed description of the storyline in this movie, the researcher used a qualitative approach, and he or she also used descriptive techniques. The researcher continues by putting Robert Stanton’s notion about the storyline into practice. During the course of this investigation, the researcher came across four unique sets of pictures, namely two picture flashback charts. The researcher may come to the following conclusion after going through all of the information and analyzing it, because the events of the story take place of the data analysis, the author participates that the reader will have a better comprehension of the storyline of the movie Incredibles 2 after reading this research. The author thinks that the study that is offered here will be helpful to other readers as a resource for plot analysis.

Abstract

This study is entitled “Representation Type of Hierarchy of Needs by Christian Grey in Fifty Shades Movie” which focuses on the type of Hierarchy of Needs presented by the main character in Fifty Shades movie. This study used a qualitative method to reveal the data. In the statement in question, the author analyzes how Christian’s Grey hierarchy of need is represented in the Fifty Shades movie. In this study, the writer only examines two movie sequels from Fifty Shades of Grey movie. Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Jamie Dornan who plays Christian Grey is the main character in this movie. The writer found a total of 19 data on the Hierarchy of Human Needs presented by Christian Grey. The writer analyzes the Hierarchy of Needs based on Maslow's theory. There are five Human Needs in Maslow's theory, namely Physiological Needs, Safety Needs, Love and Belongingness Needs, Esteem Needs, and Self Actualization Needs. Christian Grey has fulfilled all types of Human needs theory from Maslow.

Abstract

Discord serves as a widely used social media platform among millennials around the globe and it enables seamless communication during online gaming sessions. A few studies on the use of Discord still are limited. Therefore, this research paper seeks to propose the utilization of discord as a means in a listening class. The article offers empirical evidence supporting the considerable in what way discord will be affordable in listening class. Initially, the paper reviews previous studies that have explored the most recent social media used by teenagers that is Discord, Telegram, and TikTok. Then, it gives some practical ways how to use Discord in listening class. Subsequently, this paper elucidates the ways in which Discord can boaster learners effectively to comfortable and enjoyable listening comprehending exercises for university students. Finally, a summary is provided at the conclusion of the paper, offering an overview of its main points.

Abstract

This research aims to conduct a speech acts analysis performed by the character of Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders Series Season 1. The study seeks to explore the different types of speech acts used by Thomas Shelby and their corresponding meanings. A descriptive qualitative method is employed for this research. Data collection involves the following steps: (1) Carefully and repeatedly watching Peaky Blinders Season 1 on Netflix, (2) Reading the script of Peaky Blinders Series Season 1, (3) Identifying and extracting data from the series' movie scenes and script, (4) Analysing the collected data. The data analysis process includes displaying, defining, classifying, discussing, and drawing conclusions based on the findings. The analysis of Thomas Shelby's speech acts in Peaky Blinders Series Season 1 reveals intriguing patterns in his communication style. Primarily employing assertive speech acts, Thomas displays confidence and strategic leadership in managing the family's illicit activities. Additionally, commissive speech acts demonstrate his sense of responsibility and loyalty through promises and commitments. Expressive speech acts provide insight into his emotions, wit, and humour, contributing to his multifaceted personality. Explicit declarations, however, appear to be absent, which could be attributed to the specific dialogues examined. This analysis sheds light on Thomas Shelby's communication style and its influence on the dynamics within his family and criminal endeavours. Further research could explore the evolution of his speech acts and character in subsequent seasons, providing more in-depth insights into his development as a character.

Abstract

This study utilizes Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic framework, concentrating on the interpretation of signifiers associated with plastic surgery. A particular emphasis is placed on the "Male Rhinoplasty" page as a case study, where icons, indexes, and symbols embedded in both images and texts are scrutinized across different sections of the website. Employing a qualitative approach, the study involves meticulous analysis of ten images extracted from the "Male Plastic Surgery" page. Among these, the study identifies 13 icons, 12 indexes, and 18 symbols, all of which serve as visual cues to not only enrich user experience but also evoke emotional responses that engage potential patients. The implications of these findings underscore the comprehensive communication strategy employed by ID Hospital's website. By adeptly incorporating Peirce's semiotic principles, the website constructs a multifaceted narrative concerning male rhinoplasty that is both visually captivating and emotionally resonant. This research not only sheds light on the semiotic complexities within the realm of plastic surgery communication but also provides insights into how websites can effectively employ visual and textual elements to convey intricate messages.

Abstract

This research is conducted to analyze symbols in Island Korean drama. This research aims at explaining the connotation meanings in the Island drama. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method and content analysis as the research method. The sources of data are 7 selected pictures taken from Island Korean drama. The data is taken from Telegram and Web, then screenshotting scene of the symbol represented in Island Korean drama, and understanding the dialogues of Island Korean drama, after that describing symbol and connotative meaning of each scene of Island Korean drama using Roland Barthes’ theory semiotics and the last is drawing the conclusion. In this research, all of scenes in Island Korean drama have symbol and connotative meaning. Most of them are about bad omens, weapons to kill demons of lust, and demons of lust.

Abstract

A literary work is an imaginative idea written by an author. To introduce literary works, interesting learning media are needed. Thus, learning innovation needs to be practiced. One of the innovations in teaching literary works can be practiced with the use of ICT, for example, learning video. Character analysis videos of ‘The Paper Menagerie’ by Ken Liu can be used as a literary learning medium. This descriptive qualitative study uses the theory of literary learning media by Kem and Dayton to analyze the use of short story analysis video as a media in teaching and also to analyze the main function of that media. Then the theory of character by Egri Lajos will be applied to analyze the three dimensions of character that has been explained in the video. The research shows that the video analyzing the Short Story “The Paper Menagerie” By Ken Liu fulfills the three main functions of literary learning media. They are first, the discursive methods of motivation of interest or action, second, the media present information, and third the media giving incursion. In conclusion, the character analysis video of the short story “The Paper Menagerie” by Ken Liu could be used as a learning medium.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze hierarchy of needs using Abraham Maslow's theories on Korean Drama Itaewon Class (2020). This research is motivated by the existence of aspects of human needs which are reflected through the characters in the drama. This study aims to describe the process of fulfilling the levels of the hierarchy of needs carried out by main characters there are Park Saeroy and Jo Yiseo in Drama Itaewon Class. In conducting this research, the method is used descriptive qualitative method. The formulation of the problem in this study is what is the hierarchy of needs portrayed by the main characters in the drama Itaewon Class. This study uses the motivational theory of the hierarchy of needs by Abraham Maslow. Based on the study and discussion of research results, it can be concluded in the following paragraphs. The hierarchy of needs in the two main characters are (1) physiological needs, (2) safety and security needs, (3) belonging and love needs, (4) self-esteem needs, and (5) need for realization or self-actualization. Of the five levels of needs that exist, the two main characters have succeeded in fulfilling their needs up to the level of self-actualization.
