EL2J = English Language and Literature Journal publishes articles on literature, language, and language teaching from various perspectives, covering both literary and fieldwork studies. The journal puts emphasis on aspects related to language studies, with special reference to culture, literature, linguistics, and language teaching. This journal always places English language and literature in the central focus of academic inquiry and invites any comprehensive observation with various dimensions in the country. The journal, serving as a forum for the study of literature, language, and language teaching, supports studies of particular themes and interdisciplinary studies in relation to the subjects. Abstract

This study aims to analyze signs using Roland Barthes' semiotics, and analyze the denotative and connotative meanings of Body Shaming signs contained in the “True Beauty” series.This study describes: (1) types of body shaming signs that appear in the True Beauty series. (2) the denotative and connotative meanings of each sign contained in the True Beauty series. The data source for this research is a popular Korean series directed by Kim Sang-hyub, and Yaongyi as the author of a webtoon entitled True Beauty which was adapted into a drama. The research is focused on the semiotics of body shaming contained in the “True beauty” series. Data analysis were: (1) Describing the denotation and connotation of body shaming for the main character in the “True Beauty” Series. (2) Draw the conclusion. The results of the study revealed that there are scenes of verbal and non-verbal body shaming/bullying in the Korean Drama “True Beauty” series. Verbal bullying is a form of humiliation that can be seen or heard by the senses marked by words and actions which in this drama are represented by cursing, laughing, shouting (Ugly Calling, Dumpling, Red face, Slapping, Dousing with dirty water, Throwing things), Meanwhile Non-verbal bullying is a form of humiliation that cannot be directly felt by the senses in this drama represented by a form of action (gaze, spreading embarrassing videos, crossing out facial posters).

Abstract

This research aims to analyze hero archetype of main character in A Study in Scarlet. This study explains the hero archetype of main character in A Study in Scarlet. The researcher uses a qualitative approach as a research method. The data source is A Study in Scarlet. Data collection by: (1) read comprehensively the novel (2) Collect and retrieve data from the novel relating to the research problem (3) Fragmenting dialogue in the novel according to the research problem (4) selecting the dialog that are the hero archetype. Meanwhile, the data analysis procedures are: (1) Selecting dialogs in the novel A study in Scarlet, (2) classifying the hero archetype based on objects of Carol Pearson's theory, such as the innocent, the warrior, the caregiver. (4) drawing a conclusion. This study shows that the appearance of the hero archetype in the main character there found A Study in Scarlet. The research delves into the profound exploration of the hero archetype as exemplified by the main character in Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Study in Scarlet." Adopting a qualitative research methodology, this study meticulously dissects the character's traits and actions, primarily drawing from the narrative structure and dialogues within the novel. The principal data source for this research is the text of "A Study in Scarlet." The data collection process was methodical and comprehensive. It began with an in-depth reading of the novel, followed by the extraction of relevant data that directly addresses the research problem. Subsequently, dialogues were fragmented, and a careful selection process was employed to pinpoint those that truly represent the hero archetype. For the analysis, the study employed a systematic procedure. Dialogues from "A Study in Scarlet" were selected and classified based on Carol Pearson's renowned theory of hero archetypes. Pearson's theory delineates various hero archetypes, such as the innocent, the warrior, and the caregiver, each representing different facets of heroism. The findings from this research reveal that the main character in "A Study in Scarlet" resonates with several of these archetypes, showcasing the multidimensionality of his character. In conclusion, this research not only highlights the literary depth and intricacy of Doyle's work but also sheds light on the timeless and universal nature of hero archetypes in classic literature.

Abstract

This research delves into the denotative and connotative meanings embedded in NF's album "The Search," employing Geoffrey Leech's theoretical framework to unveil the intricacies of the artist's song writing. Through qualitative analysis, the study explores multiple tracks from the album, categorizing the nuanced denotative and connotative layers within each song. Addressing themes such as fame, self-identity, mental health, and personal growth, NF's lyrics provide an introspective lens for listeners. The findings illuminate those 54 lyrics in the album encompass both denotative and connotative meanings, demonstrating NF's adept use of poetic language to convey narratives of wisdom, empowerment, and acknowledgment of life's challenges. The synthesis of denotative and connotative elements crafts a profound and evocative experience, fostering a connection between the artist and the audience. The research advocates for further exploration of NF's song writing process, encouraging comparative analysis with other artists in the genre to underscore his distinctive contributions to contemporary music. Overall, the study underscores the significance of uncovering deeper meanings in song lyrics, positioning NF's music as a platform for introspection, empathy, and meaningful connection. The application of Geoffrey Leech's theory enriches the comprehension of NF's artistic expression and its resonating impact on the audience.

Abstract

This paper illustrates that the impacts of different factors on second language (L2) acquisition exhibit variability. Emphasizing the significance of individual diversity in second language acquisition (SLA) is crucial. Factors such as learners' motivation, attitude, age, IQ, aptitude, learning style, and personality, among others, play a role in shaping their approaches to, and potentially their success or failure in, acquiring a second language. initiates with an examination of the factors impacting second language acquisition. Thus, motivation, attitude, age, IQ, aptitude, cognitive style, and personality are acknowledged as contributing elements in second language acquisition. Certain factors are regarded as having greater influence, while others are seen as having equal significance. It is posited that typically, any child raised under normal conditions will proficiently acquire their first language.

Abstract

This study investigates the translation procedures used by Sendra B. Tanuwidjaya to convey metaphors from Christopher Paolini's “Eragon” novel into Indonesian. Based on George Lakoff's metaphor theory and Hurtado Albir's translation theory, it identifies 139 metaphors that are classified as structural (77), orientational (15), and ontological (47). Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research focuses on the translator's use of strategies such as literal translation, modulation, and modification to balance the original's tone and style with cultural relevance for Indonesian readers. The findings highlight the significance of nuanced tactics in literary translation and encourage additional research into the difficulties of metaphor translation.

Abstract

The primary aim of this research is to thoroughly analyze the various types of struggles faced by the main character, Maquia, in the animated movie Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. To achieve this objective, the writer employed a qualitative research method, in order to find the type of struggles that Maquia encounters throughout the narrative. The source material for this research was the movie itself, which was obtained from the internet via the website: https://kusonime.com. The data collection process involved several key steps: first, downloading the movie Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms; second, watching the film attentively; and third, taking detailed notes on the dialogues and scenes that specifically depict the types of struggles faced by Maquia. Through this analysis, the writer identified three distinct types of struggles based on Georgia’s struggle theory: Man vs. Self, Man vs. Society, and Man vs. Fate or Destiny. These struggles are evident in various aspects of Maquia’s journey, particularly highlighting the challenges she faces as a single mother. Ultimately, the research concludes that the struggles depicted in Maquia’s story serve as a poignant representation of the profound difficulties associated with single motherhood, underscoring the emotional and societal challenges that accompany this role.

Abstract

Movies are a potent medium for learning, as they are not only accessible but also have the capability to shape behaviour and provoke meaningful conversations. It is crucial to recognize that not all cinematic content promotes positive examples; some scenes reinforce negative portrayals and harmful stereotypes. This study decisively examines the gender dynamics in the Walt Disney Company film "Brave," which exemplifies the persistent issue of gender stereotypes in media. The primary objective of this research is to assertively analyse the gender roles depicted in children's films, with a particular focus on Merida’s character in "Brave." A qualitative research approach is adopted, employing a thorough methodology that includes multiple viewings of the film, detailed summary readings, extensive note-taking, script interpretation, identification of key terms and dialogues, and review of pertinent academic journals and articles online. This study delves into the gender dynamics presented in the Walt Disney Company’s animated film "Brave," which serves as a compelling example of the lingering issue of gender stereotypes in media. The primary goal of this research is to critically assess the gender roles depicted in children's films, with a particular emphasis on the character of Merida in "Brave." It seeks to understand how Merida challenges traditional gender expectations and whether she ultimately conforms to established gender norms. The research questions are designed to scrutinize the characteristics of Princess Merida. The findings reveal that Merida embodies ten distinct masculine traits, illustrating her complexity as a character who defies conventional expectations of femininity.

Abstract

This study investigates the anxiety experienced by 10th-grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Balongrejo Jombang in learning English. The research focuses on five types of anxiety: communication, performance, test, assessment, and comprehension. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, the study highlights significant levels of anxiety among students, including nervousness when speaking English, fear of misunderstanding, and stress during exams. Recommendations are proposed, such as implementing supportive teaching methods, providing psychological interventions, and organizing skill-enhancing programs to mitigate anxiety and improve students' English proficiency.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyse the kinds of deixis and the types is more dominant used in Anti-Hero song lyrics. This research using qualitative method to analyse the kinds of deixis and the types is more dominant used in Anti-Hero song lyrics. The source of data taken from lyrics of Taylor Swift song lyrics Anti-Hero on the internet website genius.com. The data collected by: First, visiting and reading the music and lyrics platform to find out all the lyrics concerning with the object of the study and read all the lyrics from Anti-Hero song lyrics by Taylor Swift. Second, copy pasting the lyrics and putting all the lyrics in a folder that is formatted as a word documentation and saving it. The result of the analysis is that there are 4 types of deixis, namely, person, spatial, temporal, and social deixis in song lyrics from Anti-Hero and personal deixis is the most dominant used. The conclusion that the Anti-Hero song lyrics uses all different kinds of deixis, including person, spatial, time, and social deixis and person deixis is the most dominant form in the songs according to this study especially first-person deixis “I, me, my” that has 65 data.
